Quotes

  • 2 : 909 is different. Don't tell me you haven't seen the fear in his eyes.

2 : Fear is not guilt.

2 : Yes, it is. Fear is always guilt in disguise. I thought you were the man who understood human behavior. 909's fear must be investigated. Analyzed thoroughly.

6 : What is it I'd be looking for?

2 : Well, you'll know when you find it. Perhaps he's a Dreamer.

    6 : Why should I do it?

2 : Because you need to keep up, 6. Give yourself a chance. He's watching you now. You watch him. Do it, 6, because you want to.

  • 909 : There's our suspect. His number's 1955.

6 : And what makes him a suspect?

    909 : We had a report.

    6 : How do I find out if he's a Dreamer?

909 : Get close. You have a position here. Teacher. You start today. Be careful. 1955 might be an undercover himself. He may be compiling a dossier on you.

  • 909 : [surveilling 1955's home]  The towel is probably a coded signal.

6 : Maybe he's just hanging it out to dry. Signal to who?

    909 : The others.

6 : What, like a group of them? Organized? They meet, plot? Did one of the suspects tell you this?

    909 : No one's admitted it. Yet. But once you're a suspect, you're guilty.

  • 6 : [after witnessing 1955 attempt suicide]  Kind of makes you wonder... if he'd do that to himself... maybe he is guilty.

    909 : You're catching up fast.

6 : Is that how it works? Is that how Dreamers are caught?

909 : That's the way I was shown. You decide.

  • 909 : You okay there?

6 : Do I look okay to you?

909 : What do they call you?

    6 : They call me 6.

909 : Well, 6... it's not wise to hang around here.

    6 : Well, I wouldn't wanna be not wise, would I?

  • 1955 : And who can tell me which Number 2 oversaw the reformation?

1100 : [raising her hand]  Sir, it was 2 the 14th.

1955 : It was indeed. And who can tell me the first woman Number 2?

    [1100 raises her hand again]

    1955 : Put your hand down, 1100.

66-16 : [with his hand raised, too]  Sir, was it Lady Number 2 the Great?

[the kids laugh, and 1955 whacks him on the head]

    6 : Who is Number 1?

1955 : [the kids all raise their hands]  Ah. The oldest question in Village history. Go on, 1100, you tell him.

1100 : There is no Number 1. There never has been and there never will be. The concept of the Number 2 is an act of humility. The title reminds us that we are all public servants. Even Number 2. No one is Number 1.

  • 2 : Oh, thank you for coming, 6. 909 here, he's an undercover. One of our best. I thought you might have noticed that. I want you to work with 909, 6.

6 : You think I'd work for you?

2 : Oh, no, no, no. Not for me. For them, for the people you would be watching. You pronounce so loudly your opposition to me, your disbelief of everything we stand for. They might trust you. We already have our suspects. And I know you want to make contact with Dreamers. I offer you the apparatus and expertise of our highly-trained and well-financed undercover operations to do just that.

6 : Why would you give me all that if it wasn't a trap?

2 : Oh, my dear 6, it is a trap. You have such a high opinion of yourself. I wondered if you would be clever enough to turn this opportunity to your own advantage.

  • Michael : You have a knack, I've noticed. You talk a lot, and the more you talk, the less you say. Is that something they teach you?

Lucy : It's nerves. You make me... you make me nervous.

Michael : We're here, and we're staying here, so you can talk all you want. But we're not leaving until you tell me two things. Who are you, and what do you want? Come on. Why me?

    Lucy : That's three things.

  • 909 : Undercovers work in cells. Twos, threes, fours. You and I are a cell. First rule, tell no one about your cell. We don't know the other cells, they don't know us.

6 : That means everyone could be an undercover. Every single person in the Village. So someone could be investigating you right now. Another undercover cell.

    909 : It's a possibility, yeah, I suppose.

  • 6 : So, tell me the kind of work you've been doing so far.

    [looking at a student's workbook]

6 : What do you got there, 66-16?

66-16 : My mother goes to yoga on Tuesdays. She hasn't missed one in the last 23 weeks. Then she missed one. That's suspicious.

6 : Maybe it's just she wasn't feeling well. What do you have there, 1100?

1100 : My birthday presents. Long-distance speech recording device.

    6 : Uh-huh.

    1100 : And a mobile person tracker.

    6 : Very nice.

1100 : Sir, have you worked with the latest roach cam technology?

    6 : Uh, no, I have not.

1100 : You drill a hole or plant it on a suspect, on their clothes or in their skin, so you can observe them 24/7.

6 : Well, you certainly all have skills. You're smart. So here's your new task. Find out who we're working for. What do they want? What are they up to? What's their secret?

  • 909 : [survelling 1955]  Question: why does he go swimming after work?

6 : Answer: because he likes swimming.

    909 : We're looking at a man who doesn't wanna go home.

6 : And that makes him suspicious?

909 : He knows he's being watched. Everything is suspicious if you look at it properly. Everyone has secrets. No one is without guilt. We just have to work out what it is they're guilty of.

6 : Why don't you arrest him and ask him if he's a Dreamer?

909 : Well, that would produce nothing but confusion. He would lie. If I catch him out in his lying, then he tells new lies and then more new lies. It's better to watch him. Wait 'til his guilt emerges.

    6 : Who reported him?

909 : One of his students. We don't know which one. Reports come in anonymously for the safety and protection of the informant.

    6 : [dryly sarcastic]  That's nice.

  • 6 : Got any family, 909?

909 : Family? No. I was never much good at relationships.

6 : I guess undercovers don't like to get too close to people. Something too human about that, huh?

  • 6 : 1955, can you keep a secret?

    1955 : You're an oddity, 6.

6 : I have these crazy thoughts. What if there was some other place, you know, outside the Village? How mad is that?

1955 : I'm one of those lucky people who doesn't need distraction. Uh, no wife, no family. I'm not interested in alcohol or gambling. Sports, cigarettes, no. No. Everything I need is right here.

  • 6 : Is everybody here living in fear?

313 : Yes. No, no, no it doesn't... it doesn't have to be like that. Good and bad, right and wrong. People here, they get on with it. They have jobs. They clean the streets, they... they wait on tables. They work in hospitals. Look out for the neighbors. They're decent, ordinary people. They f... they fall in love. Have kids. Normal lives. What's wrong with that?

6 : What if they speak out? Think differently? What kind of lives do they have then?

313 : They go for treatment.

    6 : What treatment?

    313 : I don't ask.

6 : So that's what's wrong with your cozy little Village life, 313, and you know it. The old man, 554. Hell, she was killed right here. They had dreams, they knew the truth.

    313 : No, no, look... I can't...

6 : Well, there's gotta be others, and I'm gonna find them.

313 : Yeah, I have to stop seeing you, 6. People who get close to you, they don't tend to live very long.

  • 1955 : They're with me for history, first session. 1634 has them for math after that. Then it's sports. I don't see the point myself, really. And then they're with you for Surveillance Techniques all afternoon.

6 : Doesn't that seem a bit odd, teaching surveillance to kids?

1955 : Why should it? It's your subject.

  • 6 : [sneaking in to visit 1955 in the hospital]  1955, what happened to you... we have to stop this from happening to other Dreamers.

[unable to talk, 1955 gestures at something]

    6 : What?

[seeing 1955 wants a notepad from the bedside table, he hands it over and reads what he writes]

    6 : "I'm a teacher."

[seeing him write "I am a mistake"]

6 : No, you're not. I'm the mistake. Please. I have a friend. She's in danger. I need to get her out. Get her to safety. Who are the Dreamers? And how do I make contact?

    [1955 writes "I am a history man. That's all"]

6 : Why did you do this to yourself? We could have found a way out. Why?

[in all caps, 1955 writes "despair"]

  • 909 : We should stop for a while. A few weeks, that's all. I don't think your father suspects us, but we should be careful...

11-12 : My father suspects everyone.

909 : Yeah. But not us. Not if we're careful. Come here.

6 : [coming in as they hug]  You sent those photographs to 313. Why?

    909 : I-I didn't send any photographs. 313 is not my mission.

6 : I want all surveillance taken off 313. I want her left alone.

    909 : I can't give you that.

6 : [looking at 11-12]  But you can. I want 313 to be safe. That's my price for keeping what I know to myself.

  • 6 : 313, you have to be careful.

313 : What do you mean?

6 : I mean whatever you dream, don't draw anything, put anything on paper, or talk to anyone.

313 : Why are you doing this?

6 : 'Cause I don't want anything to happen to you.

[she shows him a surveillance photo of him and 909 dropping 1955 at the hospital]

6 : So, we found him. He was hurt.

    [she shows him more]

6 : Where did you get these?

313 : They were sent to me anonymously.

    [showing him one more]

313 : That's you. That's you on the roof of my building. It's you.

6 : Let me tell you why I did this.

313 : I know why. You're the undercover. I let myself believe you. I can't even bear to look at you.

  • 6 : Where have they taken 313?

11-12 : What makes you think I would help you, 6?

6 : Help me, or I go to your father with what you did to 909.

11-12 : Go to the Clinic.

    [6 starts to get up]

11-12 : You'll never find her. She'll have been sent down to the tunnels.

6 : Tunnels? What will they do to her?

    11-12 : You don't wanna know.

    6 : How do I get in?

11-12 : You don't. Only people going for treatment ever get in.

6 : Send me for treatment.

  • Lucy : Curtis. That's the name I hear whispered all the time. Curtis. We have to go in there now.

    Michael : I, I...

Lucy : No, I'm trying to help you here.

Michael : I'm not going back there. Why... why should I trust you?

    Lucy : Because...

    Michael : Get out.

Lucy : We don't have time for this. We have to go...

Michael : Get out of my apartment.

Lucy : [writing her number on his table]  You know, if you, um, change your mind, you can call me, okay?

  • 909 : [6 finds him bleeding out after being stabbed by 11-12]  Don't blame him. Tell me the dreams are true.

    6 : They're true. They're all true.

909 : There are Dreamers. They meet. I'm sure of it. Find them.

  • Lucy : When I asked for your phone, you already knew I'd been sent after you.

Michael : It's Summakor. Everyone has a monitor. Perk of the job.

Lucy : And you brought me here.

Michael : Oh, you're free to go. But if you stay, we talk.

Lucy : You know I'll stay.

Michael : Let's not waste any more time.

Lucy : I liked you. That wasn't a lie. If that was all, then I wouldn't have had the courage to approach you.

Michael : So, what did give you the courage?

Lucy : Your reports. You asked questions. You were different. You said things that I was feeling about what was going on in Summakor. You must know more than you realized. They wanted you stopped.

  • 2 : You're two and a half minutes late, 6. I hear you've been doing outstanding work.

6 : Everything and anything I might do is for one reason. That's to work against you.

    2 : I have a new mission for you.

6 : Shouldn't we wait for 909 to get here?

    2 : He wasn't invited.

6 : [connecting the dots]  909's my new mission.

2 : 909 has made himself suspect. I have every faith in him as a conscientious undercover.

    6 : I know he's been spying on me.

2 : Well, of course he is. Well, you'd learned that before, surely. It'd be a sorry state of affairs if he weren't.

  • Lucy : Tell me, why did you resign?

    Michael : To drink beer.

Lucy : Up on the Purpose Floor, something is wrong. That is why I came looking for you. I thought it bothered you. I thought you wanted to know. And now you just wanna drink beer.

Michael : Maybe I don't know what to think. Or who to trust. Maybe I'm just trying to hold on to my own mind here. Maybe drinking beer is easier.

Lucy : You wanted to know. You stopped. Why?

    [realizing]

Lucy : Because you're already there.

Michael : What do you mean I'm already there?

Lucy : The people that you saw, the ones you said changed... the same thing has happened to you.
