Instant growth

So Melinda has her baby by her second husband, who most of the time looks like her dead first husband because the dead first husband's spirit jumped into a dying man a season or two ago. Anyhow... the baby suddenly ages five years in this episode, so as not to make Melinda appear to be an absent parent as she takes on various ghosts. I am not always sure who is watching the five year old, for that matter, but at least a five year old can go into the fridge for himself and presumably is potty trained, just in case Melinda has to leave him home alone. About a hundred years ago, BEWITCHED pulled a similar stunt with Samantha's daughter, and as with Samantha's baby, Meldina's boy exhibits paranormal powers. I guess things could be worse. But the show clearly is starting to falter.

The Trip To Cancellation

Warning: Spoilers
In what was overall an excellent series, with some great scripts, the producers and writers seriously blew twice. The first was in killing off Jim, and creating a bunch of machinations to bring him back. This was the second.

Why on earth they felt they had to add a son to the family, and jump the story line ahead five years, is anyone's guess. Perhaps they had run out of ideas based on the premise of a ghost whisperer, and felt a new one, who is also an empath, would open up more possibilities. Much like Ned the 8 year-old suddenly becomes Ned the 18 year-old.

At any rate, and despite there were some good Season 5 episodes, the increased emphasis on the boy never really worked, and likely was the cause of the series' doom.

One big giant plot hole!
bluebwings3 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
When the episode opened my husband and I made a bet that by the end of the episode she would have her old body back. We both nodded that it'd happen way before the halfway point. Sure enough we flash forward 5 years and she's a "hot mama". But before all that there is the huge plot hole that they created for this season. As they are rushing her into the operating room she hollers out for Jim. You think, "oh a slip of the tongue" No, the answer is no! She consistently calls Sam, "Jim". I then looked into Ken (the actor who played Sam) and evidently we are to forget that Sam ever existed. Assume that Sam had his name changed to Jim legally and Sam's family is okay with this and never visit. Inconsistent soap opera crap!
