The journey continues along the old eastern route of the Vikings, across the Volkhov river to Novgorod (now Veliki Novgorod) and from there to the Volga. Other cities along the way include Staraya Ladoga, Kalinin (now Tver) and Dubna.
The cities Rybinsk, Yaroslavl, Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod), Palekh, Kazan, Ulyanovsk and Volgograd (previously Stalingrad) are located on the Volga, the longest river in Europe. Rostov-on-Don lies on the Don River.
