At season 2 and ..
amflemming27 June 2023
I just have to say that there is too much chaos and so few likeable characters. Who is a character I want to support? Sydney. Tina. Marcus. Surpringly - not deadpan Carmy! The most dreaded character is Richie! His rude, loud, actions make my blood pressure rise and I wish his selfish complications weren't a part of this restaurant dream. I cringe at so many events on every episode that I really can't believe that there are so many stellar reviews. Am I actually watching the same show as everyone else? I'm trying hard to like this series but I find myself pulling my hair out while I'm dealing with this mess of everyone's situations. Yeah I know y'all thumbs down my opinion here.

Could only make it through 1.5 episodes
asc8530 June 2022
As others have noted, there is just constant yelling and screaming and cursing. Although I like that the Richie character uses an authentic Chicago accent, he is super annoying. Why wasn't he fired the first moment that he's insubordinate? Is he really some great, indispensable worker and/or chef that I'm missing?

I really wanted to like this one, but it is really hard to like. How people love this show is beyond me, but in reading some other reviews on this site, I am glad that I'm not the only one who gave this series a try and could not believe how horrible it was.

Over the top parody of itself
grfgcutk3 July 2022
Saw positive reviews so I decided to check it out and found another show falling prey to white sides over-inflated sense of self-dramatisation.

Everyone yells and the camera zooms and darts around for dramatic close ups. You'd think the stakes were life or death, but no it's just idiots making a sandwich.

If the show had any self awareness it'd be funny like the Lego Movie, but instead it's the type of thing the Lego Movie would parody.

No idea who the main character is
pbpetel16 January 2024
"The Bear": A Bunch of Screaming Men in a Kitchen presents an intriguing narrative, drawing attention after Ayo's Golden Globes win. Despite initial curiosity, the film may disappoint as it follows the common trend of a white male lead with a diverse supporting cast. The movie's reliance on this familiar dynamic may hinder its ability to offer a fresh perspective. While the kitchen setting and the diverse cast are noteworthy, the film seems to fall into a conventional portrayal, lacking a more innovative approach.

- A bunch of screaming men in a kitchen. I was so curious about that movie after watching Ayo win a golden globes award. Nothing special. Just another movie where the main character is a white man with a diverse cast supporting a white man as their leader. Weird concept.

Why the high review
maxnyc15 July 2022
The show is bad. Why does it get this rating? Characters are caricatural and unlovable. Loud. Obnoxious. Constant yelling and uninteresting story. Don't waste your time over this.

Teenager humor.
cinistersynthicate29 June 2022
At first it's okay but the humor in this show gets really repetitive and annoying it's the same kind of joke just in a different way over and over again. The cast isn't even a problem, a lot of them are pretty good in the previous works that I have seen but they didn't have much to work with here and I can see it. Definitely not worth the time to watch.

We were hoodwinked
t-c-redman16 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Watched 3.25 episodes and realised we have been hoodwinked. It's the "emperors new clothes", in a kitchen.

Started off ok, notwithstanding the plot - cliche, the script - too smarty for its own good, the language - disgusting, childish and booring, the dramatic tension - contrived and often pathetic. ( The acting is excellent, realistic and convincing, but it can't save the day.)

But the rot set in with the "huge tub of veal stock perched in a high shelf" sequence .. Why put it there? Why the, supposedly, most intelligent member of staff tries to get it down herself, spurning offer of help from taller and stronger member of the team? Why, after the inevitable disaster, the said member of the team calmly helps clear up the mess with not a whisper if "I told you so"?

That sequence nearly made us switch off. But it was the "zanex dropped in the children's party drink" sequence, and more specifically the reaction to that irresponsible accident, i.e. Laughing it off, that made us realise the supposed gritty reality of the show was a complete sham.

Fast cameras, indistinct dialogue, confusing plot, foul language do not make clever or compelling television no matter what the IMDb rating says.

who directed this?!!
angelorwez17 January 2023
There's just something about a show that is different that is soo appealing...it's not the same regurgitated stories and genres and plot...that's why i was so excited for this show...

a show about cooking that isn't some scripted reality nonsense...and to add to that...it's a comedy!...dramedy...which i think might just be the most groundbreaking innovation in television...

there's some things that you don't realize bother or will bother you until you actually face them...you don't really think about them until when you actually have to...and this for me...is direction and camera work...how scenes look and how the camera moves...

i could not see past this with this show...why is there sooo much close-up!!...this is not how you shoot scenes!!...the characters feel like they're in my face!!...i watch it and i feel crowded!...there's too much zoom...and when that happens the scenes lack perspective!!...it should only be done for effect...to communicate something specific...

i couldn't concentrate!!...the whole time am thinking why are they soo close!...am supposed to watch things unfold...not have people shoved in my face!...this is production 101...if this was intentional...i have absolutely no idea what they were going for...

completely kills a potentially good show...

Too frantic.
neilanderson-9691316 October 2022
Frantic and jarring, with multiple characters talking at once, a weird and unfitting soundtrack and characters you can't like.

I'll give that, having working in restaurants, there's a huge amount of unlikable people there, but why anyone needs to see them escapes me. If there's a story in amongst the screaming I didn't notice it.

I imagine the reasons I didn't like this are the ones others live it for, but I found this stream of consciousness screaming approach unwatchable.

Great if you really like watching noisy sandwiches being made. I really didn't get the point of why this exists.

Not for me thanks.

What on Earth?
nqsgpsvf5 August 2023
I am completely and utterly baffled by all of the hype and the good reviews for this drivel. Have the people who enjoyed it never watched anything else before in their lives? NOTHING HAPPENS IN IT! I forced myself through 6 episodes of the first season and I had to turn it off for good because I was feeling actual rage about how terrible it is. As I said, nothing at all happens in it, none of the characters are likeable and the storyline is severely lacking. What I also don't understand is why all of the characters act as though they are working in a high-pressure and stressful kitchen at a Michelin star restaurant - they are working in a sandwich shop. Plus the fact that they have about 15 people working there - WHY? Every single thing about it makes me angry, especially the calling each other CHEF and the 2 mains "COUSIN!!" It's just dreadful and I wish I hadn't wasted 3 hours of my life watching it. I'm absolutely dumbfounded about how anybody could find it remotely entertaining or interesting, never mind all of the people calling it amazing and outstanding etc etc. I've been told what the HUGE climax is to the first series and even that is totally boring. I hate it, I really do.

Clunky
darcyleeyyz24 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The shots of food prep are amazing.

That's it.

The characters' backstories, motivations, and story arcs are quite clunky. There is potential here for all the characters to learn something, but the opportunity was missed. Or the show could've leaned on it being more of a comedy, there's plenty to draw on with such diverse characters. But all in all, none of the ideas came together. Shows can be multi-genre, but it needs to work. This one didn't.

Carmy and Sugar's journey of grief and reconciliation was truncated and rang a little shallow. Richie's path to self awareness and redemption wasn't explored. Tina's personal growth as a chef had no ending. Marcus' obsession with developing the perfect donut felt authentic, but the fact that he would forget to do his work and not take responsibility seems out of character. Sydney's arc is fantastic but her annoyance at implementing the brigade doesn't seem in line with her character, and her subsequent return doesn't make sense. In the end, Carmy and Richie didn't learn anything, least of all how to treat people with respect, being frustrated is not licence to yell at people constantly, in the real world, employees would plan their exit. Cicero was fun though!

And the ending. Everything led up to the final reveal, and it doesn't make sense. How does all that cash help them? How are they going to launder it into a new restaurant? And Cicero is just gonna let it go? Or they're gonna keep doing birthday and bachelor parties to pay off the debt? That would take 5-10 years.

So much potential. If you're into shows with writing that well considers character motivations, like Succession or Better Call Saul, skip this one and save yourself 8 hours of your life. Or watch Master Chef for the cooking, Sopranos or The Wire for mob study etc.

So bad Hulu is using it as a tax write off
fuqshytup8 July 2023
Imagine a show so bad that Hulu would use it as a way to funnel money in a giant tax write off scheme.

What else could explain the never ending string of commercials for this show? These commercials portray this show in such a negative light that no one would ever see it on purpose!

I can't imagine any reason to make a commercial that says and does nothing and gives the viewer no reason to tune in at all - unless, of course, it's some elaborate way to spend money on something that can be classified as "advertising" while not actually wanting the ads to work. Why? I imagine they overpaid on the writing, acting, and directing based on the end product they got. So, I guess they need more write offs. Tax laws are weird, so I can't even guess how this works. I could be wrong, of course. But if that's the case, what is the reason to create an ad that causes people to want to avoid your product?

I gave it a few episdoes then some more, but still awful
cleyvaalvarez2 July 2023
Did not enjoy my time, very boring show. I love lip (allen white) though. The cousin was so annoying. Such a chaotic show with yelling, it was just so unbingeable and watchable. I love food/chef shows. But this one just seemed so weird, no character development, the best character in my opinion was the guy doing the cakes/desert. Everything else was boring and did not care for. Allen White in shameless was great, but this was not a good show. I am very surprised so many people like it. I mean give it a few episodes and see if you like it, I stopped at episdoe 7 season 1, I mostly continued to that stage because i wanted to finish the season, but it was just so dull. Im usually not that critical about shows, but I was with this one.

Garbage
johnboywalton-2993915 July 2023
First, it wasn't funny at all! Yelling and swearing pretty much filled episode one and I didn't find it entertaining in any capacity. Second, the "f" word was said more times in the first episode then I've said in my entire life. Probably more times then most series in a season. I found it very boring and it seemed like even the actors were just reading their lines with no acting abilities. It looked like they were on stage at an improv, trying to be funny and they failed big time. To think they actually got paid for putting out this junk, is amazing. The only good thing about this first episode was when it was over.

Italian Beef sandwich shop fantisy
jimbaber26 June 2023
As a kid who grew up in Chicago, home to the Italian Beef sandwich, all I can say is it's impossible for me to watch this show and not laugh and cringe at the same time. I get that the show is about more than making beef sandwiches, but the idea that a serious chef would make some Michelin star restaurant experience out of a Italian Beef sandwich stand it just too fanciful. I, and probably most of Chicago, simply cannot suspend my disbelief long enough to enjoy the show.

For those not from Chicago, let me attempt to put this into a common frame of reference. Could you watch a TV show where a gourmet chef inherits a Taco Bell from his brother and turns it into a fine dinning Tex Mex experience? If your answer is yes, the The Bear is for you!

Counter the hype
idiosyncratic-5764120 March 2024
Nothing special about this show. Finished the first season and almost at the end of second but giving up because there is nothing in the show so far. Don't know if I'm missing the point. The most brilliant shows aren't rated like this one is. I don't get the hype. It's a bunch of purple shouting and then coming back together. It's a food show. Show me some food for goodness sake. I was expected something like the movie - the menu, minus the psychological horror part. Every character is so shallow. No depth. I finished 2 seasons and I don't even remember character names. There's no brilliance or set of culinary. Some reason sydney is supposed to have gone to the school and yet all she cooks while trying her dishes is so terrible that she has to spit out. What really is going on in this show. If you're into drama, maybe I get it, but the rating is plain ridiculous for all this empty screen time.

Terrible, chaotic, no plot
julgarity4 February 2024
The Bear is terrible, chaotic, with no plot! I was so looking forward to this after the Emmy awards, but dumbfounded about the stressful scenes and offensive language and lack of plot. I really don't understand t he popularity of this show. I watched several episodes and it just didn't get any better. While the main character was a great actor, not understanding why Ayo Ediberi won an award. She had the simplest of characters and in my opinion did her job but nothing special or anything that resonates. Annoying cousin, dumb kitchen staff. Please skip this show if you want to have a nice evening!

One Star to Counter the Hype
leftbanker-13 December 2023
I really don't get the wild popularity of this show. I've worked in restaurants, and no place this toxic could ever function. Cooks sabotaging each others' food just out of spite? Nope, couldn't happen and still stay open. I'm sort of over the whole drug addicts thing. Coke ruined my life, boo hoo. Grow up. I started this because it sounded like a fun idea, but the bickering and toxicity just wore me out after a few episodes. I picked up again on S02E01 and that was boring and annoying in equal parts.toxic

If you like people screaming at each other, then this is for you.

I just don't see what's to like about The Bear, and this is from someone desperate for content. Wow, there is just a lot of poor programming out there. Does anyone know how to play this game?

Fetishization of the Working Class
Dusty_Cartridges10 May 2023
WHERE'S THE BEEF?!

This show is all style and no substance.

I really don't understand the type of people who are gaga over The Bear... there's honestly nothing in it beyond a surface level appearance of grittiness.

It's a white savior story dressed up to look like an underdog story- but it does neither of those tropes well.

You can tell the writing was not well planned out and the scenes largely improvised as the dialogue and moment to moment drive of each character usually go around in circles and then spin down the drain to no where.

And when that gets boring they inter-cut it with closeups of food prep (usually by a stand-in hand model/chef). And then when that gets old, to keep the audience focused they just start yelling louder. ...Volume does not equate impassioned conversation.

I.e. Just because you're saying something loud, does not mean you are saying anything meaningful.

Literally you're better off entertaining yourself with a drinking game and taking a shot every time they say 'CHEF' or 'COUSIN'; you'll be drunk within the first 5 mins of any episode.

I wonder what type of people who loving watched this show and what they are judging it against... On a technical level the aesthetic of 'realness' aka 'cinema verite' is poorly done. You can tell its an unseasoned director using handheld, blurry shots, and they clearly are wayyyy too close to the actors. I guess the excuse is to have a sense of intimacy and a claustrophobic vibe, but really it just looks like you don't know how to frame a shot.

...And both those things can be done with better writing/editing.

I'll concede there are moments of good camerawork but nothing to warrant these foaming at the mouth ecstatic reviews. It reminds me of The Menu- playing on the trend of an audience who fetishize food and the people who make it.

But both stories just feel like high-class LA writers went out to eat at a fancy restaurant and tried to glean something insightful from their privileged luxury dining experiences.

Like really...a sandwich place that doesn't do take-out...in a run-down area with like...5 TABLES?!! And they can pay everyone in an overstaffed kitchen everyday, have a dedicated baker, and get all fresh ingredients for haute lavish french cuisine?

Unless the blue collar workers who frequent the place are paying $100 a plate, I HIGHLY doubt this restaurant would financially last more than a week or two.

But that's prob why it was written by someone who has never had a back of house mind-numbing job. Do you think those workers are enthusiastically screaming 'YES CHEF!' busting their asses for minimum wage? That's not real life...so I don't understand what type of person watching thinks this is 'realism'. If desaturated color filters and closeups of food equal realism to you then you are living in a bubble.

You never get to know any of the characters beyond a superficial stereotype, and yet everyone keeps creating a heightened level of do or die drama between themselves...wherein that level of hostility wouldn't fly in an actual kitchen. You'd be fired or you'd quit ASAP. They aren't soldiers, they aren't open-heart surgeons, or astronauts. But it's written so pretentiously as if it's a given that they are doing something so high stakes.

And actual high stakes situations in the show are just brushed off...like no drug dealer is shrugging their shoulders and making peace with competition on the street cause they got one free sandwich.

I just can't comprehend the praise of this fetishization of a working-class life. Especially without it having a message or meaning or even a deeper perspective on the disenfranchisement and day-to-day issues of people who would actually work and frequent a place like The Beef.

Horrible
aas-rayd17 July 2023
So slow and boring. Sucked into watching this my comments and critics. Absolute garbage. Don't waste your time. Watching paint dry or even grass grow in the desert is more enjoyable. Wanted to gouge my eyes out. Season 1 finale had about 5 minutes of actual goodness. Other than that...trash. Characters are boring. A whole season to develop characters only to realize you hate them. There is no storyline. Just lots of blah blah blah and nothing of substance. Do yourself a favour and somehow block this show from ever showing up in your feed or recommended viewing. It is that bad. Just terrible. Never get that time back.

I couldn't finish the first episode
amspaugh-56-45064523 July 2022
Need some people yelling and chaos? Well, you've come to the right place! I don't understand what's so appealing about this show. Too much constant yelling, camera work and movement for my taste. I left exhausted after the first episode.

This is not even close to a comedy or drama. Call it a train wreck.

Just people shouting at each other!
geezerdave15 July 2023
A lot of shouting and a lot of nothing. This show has a lot of not much happening other than constant conflict. We made it through season 1 and had a peak at season 2 which the first was high level boring with more shouting matches. Obviously appeals to many, but not us though. I guess the highlight of season 1 was the money etc....not wanting to give too much away.....not that there's really anything to give away. Lame very bland story line! I guess we went in with high expectations because of the usual hype and kept going with each episode hoping it would improve or something would happen to make us keep watching. Some of the acting is ok.....its just a terrible script! There needs to be something more.......something is missing to keep one watching!

The most overrated show I've come across ever. Period.
herr-skoglund17 December 2022
I have never written a review on imdb before but I felt the need to counter all the high ratings. I would like to have my time back if possible, k'thanks.

There is not one single likeable character in this show and halfway through the first episode I wished that Gordon Ramsay would've shown up at their doorstep to shut the place down and sack the lot of them.

To top it off, the series is filmed in a pretentious way to make it appear as if it is gritty and real but it only comes off as badly filmed, incoherent and far from any truth.

I can understand that people came to this series because some actor(s) they've seen previously. Sure, the acting was good at times but the overall packaging was shoddy and uninteresting and the rating is for the series as a production and not the actors performances.

An expensive joke
musicart198518 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
After S02

I think the people who made this wanted to prove even if you make the most ridiculous show with no meaning to it you get a lots of credit if you have famous and good actors in your show!.

Entertainment: zero Life lesson: none Purpose: none Writing: zero

They used vibe of the Shameless (us) in this series but couldn't do anything with it

All characters are self-centred people who never give a hand to anyone in their life without considering themselves first

The writers should started with a fork first before thinking about writing

I know most people think this is an art, this is just a waste of time and resources

The whole season 1 and 2 should be episode 1 and 2, dragging and putting a whole bunch of normal real life bs in it doesn't make it look good mate, we already did that and come home to watch and have fun, not to relive it

You guys should've put Carmen and the writers in the fridge in first or second episode of first season and tell them to come down and maybe after that we could have get something out of this series

You guys just make us worked up and you didn't give us a chance to release.

And I really want to see a pregnant woman with this mentality, come on even a 10 weeks old pregnant women gonna punch you 1000 times if you talk to her like this,

And when you see a pregnant women you need to look after her, doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman or a dog

This isn't equality to sent an 8-9 months pregnant woman to unclog a toilet ( <<= for the writers)

And there is just one unfortunate truth in this show, and that is good opportunities just go to people who nag and cry a lot and most of the times those are just useless people.
