In August, 1980, Flannery, Mark Alfred Clarkson and John Henry Williams were arrested and charged with Wilson's murder. Wilson's body was never found but police alleged that the trio had forced him off the road, abducted him and taken him to Pakenham, where Flannery took him into the to the bush to shoot him. Flannery allegedly missed and Wilson, bleeding profusely from a head wound, tried to escape. Flannery is then alleged to have gone "mad" and emptied his gun into Wilson's head and back. In October 1981, Flannery was acquitted. By this time, he had become George Freeman's bodyguard and worked closely with Neddy Smith.
While not mentioned, Chris Flannery (AKA Mr Rent-A-Kill) had a wife and two children.
According to Neddy Smith, Flannery did shout, "What the fuck do you think you are? An endangered species? You're not a fucking koala bear!", but in relation to police officers. In the series, he shouts this at one of his victims.
Karen has always maintained she knew nothing about Clark's underworld life. She thought he was a property developer, the Dominion Post reported. She was unable to be admitted to the NZ legal bar until 1991, after being rejected due to her romantic dalliance with Terry Clark. While she leads a private life, she assisted the producers with the making of this series.
