Respectable Garb

Robert Paul, one of the more ambitious of the British producers of this period, never really seems to have gotten out of the desire for respectability. For him, this meant the stage and this is a very stage-bound production. While Melies designed his sets so they looked like the real thing -- Melies was great at painting realistic rocks -- Paul's productions seemed to glory in the fact that they were clearly stage flats.

This short about a boy who needs his pants mended is a nice study in mood change. Adult actors might not have been able to carry it off, but the small child is excellent. A nice bit of accompaniment also helps.
