Affluent break-ins and plummeting spirits

'Westside' reminded me of that "Miami Vice" episode, 'The Home Invaders'. Lydia and Russell enlist the help of other squads while a rash of violent burglaries is going on, and it felt very similar. Not a bad comparison, but I just found it amusing.

Anyhoo, that's the main plot, but the real drama is in the other story lines. Put simply, Neither Cooper nor Sherman is having a good day. The former's painkiller addiction is getting beyond his control, while the latter's facing his own demons when his estranged father walks back into the house.

Cooper's situation is especially heartbreaking. It's going to get worse - much worse - but to see a proud, morally superior officer (a good one) at the end of his rope and asking around for meds is a bitter pill (no pun intended). Copper insists he's in control, and even his partner doesn't buy it. It's just an epic case of denial and those are never easy to witness.
