Drama or horror?
shoutingplatypus24 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Dystopia declares itself to be a thriller but the drama between characters take a first seat in this Swedish horror series produced for Viaplay.

Somewhere in the Swedish woods a small group of people have taken over an old steel mill for the summer to run a LARP (Live Action Role Play). Most of them are actors in the role play except one overly ambitious leader, who seem strangely disconnected from everyone else. While fiddling with the old mills power circuits they awaken something that has been hidden for may years and the scene is set.

Dystopia does a good job of slowly building tension over the first couple of episodes before it suddenly starts focusing on the sexual and personal drama between the group of actors. The seven actors kinda divides into two groups of banal highschool relationships with two girls in one group both wanting the same guys and the other group the somewhat main character is cheating on her boyfriend with both his best friend and a female colleague.

With that amount of sexual drama the horror disappears in the background all the way until we get to the last two episodes where it all didn't really matter anyway.

A lot of things work for the so far first season of the series. The acting is mostly above par, the setting at the old mill is great and scenic and lends itself well to horror. The cgi effects aren't too plentiful and the ones they put in are nicely done. There's a scientific foundation for all the shenanigans that although they're never really explained or maybe are just a bit too simplistic holds your interest enough to stay until the end and see where it all goes.

Still there's too many issues to elevate Dystopia to something great. The group are supposedly enthusiastic role players bit don't really seem care about the LARP at all. Well, except the boss who cares so much that it all becomes a bit ridiculous. There's a lot of descision making that doesn't really makes a lot of sense and in the end where it all crumbles and people are falling apart left and right their behavior comes off as out of place a lot of the time. All these things combined ruins the illusion that these are actual role players caught or actual people at all.

Watch Dystopia if you're hung over and have a day to spare like I did. It's good fun and entertaining most of the time. Just don't except a really good horror romp, that will leave you dissapointed.

painful to watch
poinla377 September 2021
I used to play tabletop RPG and some Larp years before, so I was really curious and interested by the story.

Unfortunately, the quality of this series is really really bad.

First of, the characters seem very stereoptypical and mostly stupid, their emotions, relations and reactions don't seem very natural.

Second, there's too many romantic/love issues parasiting the whole story.

Finally, the production and final work is just so disappointing, it looks like an amateur-ish project...

Might have worked as a film
xtiaan-242-7238246 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The premise is so thin. A group of people in an abandoned steel mill (it doesnt even look like a steel mill, it looks interesting, but steel wasnt produced on that site) setting it up for a live role playing game, then spooky things start to happen.

The plot is full of holes (if you had an abandoned secret research facility why would you rent it out to a bunch of inquisitive LARPERS?), the science is equally unlikely (transferring "souls") All the characters are completely unlikeable, they are either using each other, or sleeping with each other, or ignoring bad things that are happening, there is quite literally nobody to root for.

The one character I did like, because he was handsome and had a jersey I would like to own (yes, reasons to like characters in this series are just. That. Tenuous...) ends up dead.

It may have worked as a film, but theres just not enough matrerial here for a series, if you edited the whole thing down to an hour and a half it would still be an mediocre "ok one of those" films you watch on a friday night when you cant be bothered going out and dont want to think too much..

Worst ive seen, ever, in my life.
kagis31 July 2021
This series made me after 15years of watching movies and series make an account in anger of how bad this is.

The plot holes are so many You dont like anyone, everyone is just disgusting characters in their own way.

Characters spasm out freaking out doping psycothic behaviours and next scene they talk about why the other kissed the other.

This is the wierdest series that are still in some way interesting. I watched it only because i wanted to figure out the origin of this haunted place.

Supernatural Swedish horror
cthulhic_cowboy22 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Dystopia is a supernatural horror show. This alone makes it somewhat of an oddity, considering Sweden has a history of producing mainly crime thriller, drama and comedy. While Dystopia certainly has elements of both thriller and drama, it is neither of those things. Instead, it mostly remains true to it's horror roots.

The plot is centered around a group of people preparing a post-apocalyptic LARP (live action roleplay), set at a decrepit factory. The main character, Tess (Madeleine Martin), is the girlfriend who reluctantly joins her boyfriend, mostly due to guilty conscience from cheating on him. The rest of the group is a motley crew of narcissists, broken souls and originals.

Tess and the rest gradually discover that the factory has a dark past, and as the mystery unfolds, the characters get more and more wrapped up in it. Much like in The Thing (1981), knowing who to trust is getting more and more difficult.

Dystopia has excellent cinematography and great music, both which help convey the dark and ominous atmosphere which is ever-present throughout the series. The acting is a bit uneven, but Madeleine Martin, Erik Bolin and Swedish veteran Johan Hedenberg all give great performances, which help carry the show.

The script is also somewhat lacking at the times, with some plot holes and awkward lines, but with that being said, Dystopia never ever got boring and alyways left me wanting more. Director Richard Jarnhed clearly has a good grasp on horror.

Snoozefest

It could have been interesting if there was more happening. A bunch of LARPers run around an abandoned factory...eight episodes later, not much else has happened.

Creepy, unsettling and best Swedish TV-series in Years
I'll say right off the bat, I didn't really know who some of these Swedish actors were but as a resident of Sweden since a while back I had seen Johan Hedenberg. A wonderful actor.

What struck me right away was the extremely good, scored intro, the music throughout Dystopia is of I am a genuine fan of classic horror, so I was a bit suspicious when I heard VIAPLAY was doing Dystopia but boy was I surprised for a number of reasons.

The first is it kept me wondering what exactly was going on. There was just enough there to build atmosphere and tension without giving away the surprise. And it was delivered with such skill and care that it truly unfolded masterfully. You know something is wrong. You know something is up. But you can't quite figure out what it is. The Director of Dystopia is Richard Jarnhed and I need to keep an eye out for his future endeavors as he is madly talented.

And secondly this was directed by just one director. Richard directed all 8 episodes and that's not normal in Scandinavia.

And lastly, it gave us something new. This is possibly the best aspect because I am sick to death of cookie cutter horror movies. People nowadays have forgotten that horror doesn't just mean blood and guts. Before directors had to create tension and atmosphere by building the plot and unraveling the story slowly. It's refreshing to see this done with such care.

The acting is wonderful and directing is amazing. I was totally blown away by the music!

It is always nice to see a TV-series with some twists, and also those that give you some food for thought.

I am a bit blown away by the rather week reviews in Swedish press. One outlet even writes that it's outside the box and that they love the box. I am sure Dystopia will do very well internationally!

If you like Horror tension and at the same time mystery tension you should see Dystopia.

So. Many. Questions!
akusjarvi-629-37045928 June 2021
The series started out okay but eventually the plot holes and questionable character developments made me lose interest completely. Why did the Danish guy start out (kinda) speaking swedish and then gradually drift off into full blown danish, for example? I finished it but had it on as background noise the last few episodes.

Absolute garbage!
daveym5830 September 2021
How is this rated over 7.5??? Are Swedish people that easy to please? Surely not. People were seen in obvious need of help inside the factory but were just ignored all the men were running around trying to shag anyone they could get their hands on. I actually felt sorry for the actors in this series as I doubt they will ever be asked to work in another series again. So many hours out of my life I will never get back. Totally unbelievable story.

Extremely boring, avoid at all costs
domino_vpn8 January 2022
This is a waste of time, avoid at all costs. Extremely boring, painful to watch. It seems there was no money for this series to have an actual storyline and serious effects. Not to mention the lesbian soft p*rn that has absolutely NOTHING to do with the story and since this was in the horror category it is the least to say that it is nothing that i expected. I recommend you go and watch the 2020 amazon series Utopia instead, that is a masterfully created work of art, totally underrated and not spoken about (well not here in the UK where i live).

No idea how on earth this series got a currently 7* + rating here but don't listen to anyone who rated this high. Piece of s.

I dont get the good ratings?
edlc19708 February 2022
This is extremely boring swedish crap. Its so bad acting, that you begin to wonder if its a high school performance. Nothing happens. Its not a horror for sure. But What is it? That question lingers on through all the episodes. And you start to wonder why you have wasted all that time watching this crap. Time you could have spent, watching something of quality. Avoid.

Too many wierd things
theresegranath28 June 2021
The worst series ive ever seen! Bad manuscript, bad scenes, bad acting and too much focus on romantic dramas. I liked the story when I read it about a live in a industrial environment. The more you watch it the more strange it gets.

Unnecessarily bad
jonas-elgblad28 August 2021
It's hard to pinpoint exactly what is so bad about this series. They could have made this a great little series, but they just didn't...

The feeling I get from the characters and the tension between them is that they are not believable. If just one of them had behaved like a real person do when a friend has problems, the series would have been over in 2-3 episodes.

Must see series. Not like any other series from Scandinavia which makes it even better. Truly impressed by the acting. I hope that they go for a sequel.

I suffered through the first episode so you wouldn't have to
sanjsrik4 April 2022
This is bad.

I mean, just bad.

You know how some tv shows mimic bad shows as a gimmick? This one pretends or thinks it's good and instead, it's just REALLY bad. I mean really bad. Just bad. For emphasis, let me reiterate that this is bad.

The characters you wish would die off sooner. The plot, no, sorry, I have no idea what that is in this show. The sets, you know how it's set in the middle of the forest in an old whatever (yes, I stopped caring as well), you won't care either.

I did you a favor, don't watch this.
