A woman, Maria Wycoff, puts a record on a player and goes to prepare dinner. The lights flicker, and outside her son Timothy rides his toy fire truck around the driveway. A dust devil forms out in the desert, and Timothy sees it and yells to his mother but she doesn't hear him over the music. The lights flicker again and the player stops and then starts in reverse. The hands on the wall clock turn backward, and Maria runs to the window and sees that Timmy has disappeared while the dust devil swirls nearby and storm clouds gather.
Maria runs outside and sees a light shine down on her son's fire truck, but there's no sign of Timmy. As she goes to the phone and dials out, Timmy tells her not to be afraid. Maria is pulled up against the ceiling, and Timmy walks in and tells his mother not to be afraid. He tells her to take his hand and says that she doesn't have to be afraid.
That night, Maria's husband Charles arrives home and goes into the house calling to Maria. The furniture is overturned and Maria is levitating in the middle of the living room. Her eyes are solid white, and she screeches and raises her hand. Charles's head explodes.
Palm Springs, California 1954
President Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower is out playing golf and misses his putt. His two playing partners point out an agent approaching, and the lead agent tells Ike that there has been an incursion into U.S. airspace and the vehicle was shown north of an Air Force base. They don't think the vehicle belongs to the Russians, and Eisenhower excuses himself and goes with the agent.
Eisenhower packs, and tells his wife Mamie that he's going to an Air Force base to have his teeth looked at it. Mamie figures he's going to see a woman, but Ike says that he's just going to see a dentist. She doesn't believe him, and Ike says that he'll see her the next day.
The President's convoy goes out into the desert where the vehicle was shot down. All they know is that it isn't American, and they've found a body but can't learn anything from it because it was messed up in the crash. The vehicle is some sort of spacecraft, and Ike looks at the body and notes that it looks like a child. He has the soldiers take it to the base, and wonders why the spaceship is there.
A soldier calls Ike over to a tree, where a naked woman is huddled with strange markings on her back. Ike covers the man with his coat and asks who he is, and the woman says that her name is Amelia Earhart.
At the base, Ike talks to Amelia. She describes how she flying with her partner, Fred, and the island they were flying to disappeared. Their instrumentation went crazy and then the plane went down, but everything went white and that's all Amelia can remember. Amelia says that the marks were caused by needles, and "they" said the needles wouldn't hurt but they did. Ike asks her who "they" are, and Amelia asks where she is. Ike tells her who he is, but Amelia doesn't believe him and asks where Fred is. The orderlies sedate Amelia while Secret Service men take Ike out.
Out in the hallway, the lead agent tells Ike that they won't have confirmation on Amelia's fingerprints for at least 24 hours, but Ike is sure she is who she says she is. The lead agent points out that Amelia died in 1927, and she'd be almost 60. Ike knows what Amelia looks like from Mamie's photo of her. The doctor comes out and says Amelia is sedated, and she's two months' pregnant. They then go to where the body from the crash site is being autopsied.
As Ike and his men watch from the observation gallery, the surgeons dissect the body. They cut it open and discover it has no internal organs, and the lights flicker. The two surgeons peer into the chest, and a flap of skin leaps out and grabs one surgeon by the face. The other surgeon pulls it off and it jumps onto his face, while the first doctor's head explodes. Alarms go off, and the soldiers escort Ike out.
The heads of soldiers in the hallway explode, and Maria floats in the hallway ahead of the party, her eyes solid white. Ike has his men lower their guns and asks Maria to stop, and says that he's the President of the U.S. He asks Maria to stop the killing and listen to him, and Maris says that Ike will listen to them.
At a restaurant, college student Cal Cambon orders sake but tells the waitress to wait until his friends arrive to serve it. Cal's friends Kendall Carr and then Troy Lord and Jamie Howard join him. They sit down and share a toast to summer, and Cal says that he took on an internship and moved away, splitting them up. They all update each other one what they're been doing, and Cal and Troy say that they've been dating. Their parents don't know.
Jamie says that she met a wonderful guy and they were in love, and it was perfect. Then they got home and he didn't have a condom, so they didn't have sex and she had a bad reaction to his semen. Troy tells Jamie that the summer will be a party and they'll make her forget about the guy.
Cal, Troy, and Jamie check their phones, and Kendall tells them to put them away. She says that she's cured of the "curse" of technology, and talks about how she's taking a class on how they've advanced technology faster than their brains and emotions haven't adapted. She insists that her teacher, Adam, was centered and ended up having sex with him, and now she's a member of the Luddite Society.
Cal insists that technology is wonderful, and Kendall says that it's a relief to be away from it for a while. She suggests that they take a break from technology on the camping trip they're going on. The others agree.
Everyone puts for their trip and leaves their technology behind. They drive out to their tent in the desert and set up, hiking around the nearby hills and swimming in the nearby pond. One day the group is out hiking to a nearby pond, and discover that it's gone and there's nothing there but desert. Jamie feels that they should go back, and they smell something rotten.
Kendall goes off to investigate it and the others follow. They find a bunch of mutilated cows, but no pools of blood. Kendall approaches one and discovers that it was cleanly bisected in half. She touches one bisected cow, and it opens its eyes and moos. Frightened, she and the others run off.
Back at the camp site, the group packs their things and drive off in their car. The engine stops when they're in the middle of the desert, and a light shines down on them from the sky as Cal driving tries to start the car. They can't make out the source of the light, and a tall thin alien walks up to the car. Jamie sees it and yells at them to drive, but they can't. Tentacles reach in and grab them.
Later, the students wake up and discover the car is working. They notice that Jamie is gone, just as she appears on the highway ahead of them. Troy, driving the car, just manages to stop in time. They get Jamie into the car and she notices Troy is driving, and they realize they're all in different seats. Troy doesn't care and drives on.
When they get back to their apartment, Kendall calls Adam and tells him what happened. He figures they hallucinated, and Kendall remembers watching a TV documentary about alien abduction and lost time. Adam isn't convinced, and she says that her stomach is queasy and runs to the bathroom to throw up when Adam talks about food.
Jamie is drinking water, and Kendall calls her. They realize that they're both sick, and Jamie figures that they're pregnant. Kendall wonders if the boys dosed them with something and had sex with them, but Jamie doesn't believe it and says that she'll be over after she stops at a drug store.
Cal and Troy are in bed, and Cal says that he feels sick and nauseous. They're in bed, and kiss, and Troy feels ill and goes to the bathroom.
Jamie picks up pregnancy tests, and confirms that both she and Kendall are pregnant. Kendall figures they were impregnated by aliens, and does Internet research on them. Cal and Troy come over and confirm that they've been sick, craving weird food, and Cal feels like he's been punched in the chest. Kendall runs pregnancy tests on them and confirms that they're pregnant as well.
