Presents contemporary knowledge of the monkey pox virus, and documents a team of medical professionals and scientists from the World Health Organization investigating an outbreak of the virus in villages in Congo-Zaire. Examines the role of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization in the study of this new virus, monkey pox, and the political strife over the spread of the disease which caused a civil war in South Africa. Initiatives established by the World Health Organization to deal with its potentional reemergence are examined.

Viewers accompany research scientists as they track the disease from its first deadly outbreak in 1994, through the deaths of 19 people in 1996 who contracted the disease by eating monkey meat. Visits to villages where people lie dying reinforce the human impact of the virus, as well as the need for further research into its causes and cure.
