- 1925, Odessa, Texas
The day after the invasion, people tell Sheriff Thomas Wood that they saw aliens. Wood is skeptical.
In a field outside of Odessa, the Legends see a duplicate of Waverider fly down and blow up their Waverider. The team examines the wreckage, and Spooner suggests that they find the other Waverider and take out the crew. Sara agrees and the team goes back to the house to get weapons. Nate's time courier to create a portal is out of power, and Sara figures that they're stuck in 1925.
As the team panics, Pastor Hanson arrives at the doorstep. Spooner answers the door and Hanson asks if Gloria is home. The Legend tells Hanson that Gloria isn't, and Hanson says that he heard about a loud explosion nearby, and he wanted to make sure everything was all right. Spooner whispers to Sara to "flash" Hanson, and Sara whispers back that the flash device is out of batteries.
Hanson notices claw marks on the outside, and Gloria slams the door in his face. Zari points out that their weirdos with superpowers, and Astra suggests that she use her magic. Nate is skeptical, and Gary mentions the emergency safe on Time Bureau ships. Ava says that she had one installed on Waverider, and Sara tells the others to split up to search for Waverider on their property.
Behrad and Zari go off on their own to search, and Zari complains about how John left her with the key. She still doesn't know what it's for, and tells her brother that she's going to get a reinvention.
Ava and Sara wander through the woods, and Ava complains about their ruined honeymoon. Sara takes her hand and assures her they'll be fine.
Spooner and Astra search for the safe, and Astra casts a tracking spell. They realize that someone moved it and follow the trace to the sheriff's office in Odessa. Hanson has found the safe and is showing Wood.
The two women go back to the house, and they figure the neighbor will hear about it and get nosy, and finds the wreckage. Ava suggests they use Rule 44, from Time Bureau training, says that they should put on a circus as a cover story. Zari is thrilled to reinvent all of them as performers, and Astra refuses. Spooner has her repair Gloria's porch, while Sara tells Nate to talk to Wood and get him to give them the safe.
Sara, Zari, Gary, and Behrad make costumes from supplies in the house and Zari sews. Sara as the ringleader says all of the strange going-ons are because of their Guggenheim Circus.
Nate and Ava go the sheriff's office and Nate claims that's he's J. Edgar Hoover, Ava is his assistant, and they're there to talk to him about something important.
The Legends go around town advertising their circus, claiming the aliens they saw were animals that briefly escaped.
Wood shows Nate and Ava the safe, and he wonders how they learned about it from DC so quickly. Ava mentions the wrong President, and Nate appeals to Wood's patriotism.
A girl asks Gary when the circus. When they go back to the house, Gary tells the others that he invited them that night. Nate and Ava return with the safe, and Nate figures that they'll use the safe's contents to flash everyone. Ava opens the safe but finds nothing but a note. It's from Rory saying that he took the flasher for a beer run. The only thing inside is a Bureau manual and some gummy bears.
The local newspaper is soon running a story about Hoover being in Odessa. The sheriff reads it, sees the photo, and realizes that Nate isn't Hoover. Wood calls the FBI in DC and says that they have a situation.
At the house, the Legends discuss their plans. Ava quotes the rules from the manual, including the rule that they should stay put. They realize they have to put on a show to distract the locals so they don't see the Waverider wreckage. Gloria arrive and has heard about the circus, and complains about how they cut up her clothes and curtains. Sara says that they have to practice, Astra slips out because she doesn't help, and Gary sees her go.
Spooner talks to Gloria privately and tells her what happened. Gloria says that she'll deal with being arrest or ostracized, because she'd do anything for her daughter.
The Legends are out on the lawn practicing. Spooner comes out and says that they could make things bad for Gloria, so she's pulling the plug on the circus. Sara apologizes, saying they'll get out of town and figure something out.
Astra goes to the wreckage and starts to cast a resurrection spell to repair Waverider. Gary arrives and asks Astra what she's doing, and she says that she's doing what she has to because John isn't there.
Hoover and one of his agents arrive and talk to Wood. Wood is thrilled to have the "top lawman in the country" there, and Hoover asks for more details.
Astra casts the spell, as the other Legends arrive. The wreckage pulls itself together, forming Waverider.
Hoover tells Wood that Nate is probably part of the Midland Bank Robbery Gang, who the FBI have been tracking.
Astra starts bleeding from the nose from the strain, and continues despite the others' warning. She passes out and the pieces fall apart, and Hoover hears the explosion and figures that the Gang is blowing up a safe they stole.
The Legends put Astra to bed at the house so she can recover, and Spooner sits as Astra's bedside while the others rehearse their circus acts. When Astra wakes up, Spooner tells her that she failed and wonders what Astra was thinking. Astra insists that she was the only one was doing anything to get them out of Odessa, and Spooner tells her to think things through next time.
Hoover and the others arrive by car, and Spooner says that the rest of them can't be seen. They hide in the bedroom where Astra is, and Spooner answers the door and Hoover barges in. Gloria is there, and Hoover says that he heard about bank robbers there. The owner says that nothing is going on, but Hoover wants to search the place anyway.
Gary tries to hide in the closet but discovers that its locked. Zari tries John's key, and the door opens to a brick hallway. Hoover hears the noise, draws his gun, and he and his agent goes to check it out. The Legends hear them coming, duck into the hallway, and close the door behind them. They find themselves sin the Mansion, while Hoover and his agent find no one but Astra. When they open the closet door, there's nothing there but a closet.
At the Mansion, Gary explains that John made a pocket dimension that looked like the Mansion. Nate opens the door and finds Hell outside, and Gary reluctantly admits that they're in Hell.
Zari wonders why John gave her a key to the place, and Behrad assures her that John loved her and probably thought she needed a place to find herself. Zari says that she thrives in the spotlight, but reconsiders.
Ava goes through the manual and tells Sara that they should follow the rules. Sara tells her that they can get by on improvising, but Ava isn't convinced and says that they're getting sloppy. She admits that the manual probably won't help but she had to keep reading it, and Sara agrees.
Hoover asks Gloria if they can search her property, making it clear that he won't take "no" for an answer. Gary is listening at the door, and tells the others that Hoover has lefty. Zari tells Behrad that she's going to stay, and goes to get something for her. Meanwhile, the others go back to the house and Nate tells Spooner how they "disappear". Gary suggests they hideout in the mansion, but Sara points out that hiding won't get them Waverider back or find out who blew it up.
Ava joins them and says that they should go to NYC, and the manual mentions a scientist in NYC, Dr. Gwyn Davies, who laid the foundation for Bureau time travel and lives in 1925. Nate figures that Hoover won't stop looking for them.
Hoover and his man find the Waverider wreckage.
Sara says that they'll pose as bank robbers and lead Hoover out of Odessa. She wants to rob some banks, and Ava talks to her privately and says that they can't create large ripples in time. Sara says that she has faith in the Legends, and they'll succeed. She tells Ava that she can make a list of "temporal IOUs" and once they have Waverider back, they'll cross off everything on the list. Ava agrees and they go back inside, and when they go back in Spooner says that she wants to stay there with her mother and Astra until Astra recovers.
Hoover comes back, and when he goes in he finds Spooner and Gloria tied up. Gloria says that the Gang was there and forced them to cooperate, just as the Legends sneak outside, steal Hoover's car, and drive off.
The Legends drive to a Federal bank, and Sara and Ava rob the place while Nate and Behrad perform as lookouts and Gary mans the getaway car. The two women secretly steal the guards' guns, then shoot into the air and force everyone to get down onto the floor. A woman comes up, and is a big fan of the Midland Gang. When she realizes that Sara and Ava are among the robbers, she points out that the Midland Gang doesn't have any women and accuses the Legends of stealing the gang's name. Behrad suggests the name "Bullet Blondes" and Nate and the woman agree that it's catchy.
Ava has the teller hand over just as much money as they need to get to NYC, and tells the crew to go on with their normal lives. They go out, and everyone cheers the Bullet Blonde. They drive out of town, but Hoover is manning a roadblock up ahead.
Hoover knows that they're called the Bullet Blondes, and tells them to surrender. Sara tells Gary to run the roadblock, and when he nervously can't do it, Nate takes the wheel while everyone else ducks down. Nate is immune to the bullets because he turns to steal, and runs the roadblocks. Hoover is on top of the car, and when he peers down Nate hits the brakes and throws the director off.
They stop and confirm that Hoover is still alive. He draws his gun and shoots Nate, who turns to steel and the ricochet kills Hoover. Ava figures the timeline is ruined, and collapses on the road. Sara assures Ava that she's okay, and says that they've got to see the plan through. When Sara mentions Stabcast, Ava gets an idea and says that there were no witnesses so all they have to do is to have Gary in his alien form eat the body. When Gary hesitates, Ava tells him that he's a Bullet Blonde.
Astra is working Gloria's garden, and Gloria joins her and asks what she did to hurt herself. The Legend explains that she tried a spell that she wasn't ready for her, and if her former mentor was there he would tell her that she had to risk it all to succeed. Gloria tells Astra that she cast off her mother's training, did what felt was best for her, and truly became a healer. Astra isn't convinced, and Gloria tells her that Astra isn't John.
Spooner is burying the wreckage, and Astra comes up and apologizes for bringing Hoover there. She says that she was trying to prove she was as good as John, and Spooner tells her that they need Astra, not John. Spooner tells Astra that she almost lost her best friend. Astra says that nobody has told her that, and she considers Spooner her best friend as well. They sit down and Astra admits that the spell was too much for her, and accidentally casts a spell that causes Gideon to appear in a naked human body.
