A young man tries to revive his parents' wilting marriage by traveling to the 1970s when their romance was budding and make it bloom: something more complex than he expects.

After witnessing nothing but acrimony between his bickering Mumbai-based parents, Kishen and Mala Chopra, Bunty refuses to marry his girlfriend, Tanya Gonsalves. He is then introduced to her eccentric grandfather, Professor Anthony Gonsalves, and finds that the latter has invented a time-travel machine. Bunty travels back in time--specifically Holi 1975--when Mumbai was called Bombay and gets to meet his parents when they were younger--he's shocked to find his father a buck-toothed wimp and his mother a goon-like tomboy. Amidst the terror of Raman Raghav, the impending Emergency of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, banning of multinationals--including Coca Cola--and the charisma of superstar Rajesh Khanna--he sets about to try to set things right between not only his bickering parents but also his feuding grandparents. Kishen and Mala have been unhappily married for 35 years. Their only son Bunty doesn't want to commit to his girlfriend Tanya, fearing that he won't do any better at marriage with examples like his parents. Bunty meets Tanya's grandfather Anthony Gonsalves, a scientist who's working on a time machine. Bunty enters the time machine without his permission and travels 35 years back to 1975--where he sees that Kishen and Mala never got on well with each other, which is why they are unhappy in their life even after so many years. After witnessing nothing but acrimony between his bickering Mumbai-based parents, Kishen (Akshay Kumar) and Mala Chopra (Aishwarya), Bunty (Aditya Roy Kapoor) refuses to marry his girlfriend, Tanya Gonsalves (Sudeepa Singh). Kishen is conservative in spending money, while Mala lives stylishly and is a spendthrift. Kishen runs a restaurant and saves money by shopping at the wholesale vegetable market. Mala and Kishen do not respect each other at all. Bhiku (Rajpal Naurang Yadav) is the servant who came in the marriage with Mala.

Bunty is then introduced to Tanya's eccentric grandfather, Professor Anthony Gonsalves (Randhir Kapoor), and finds that the latter has invented a time-travel machine. At the 35th marriage anniversary of Kishen and Mala, Kundan (Rannvijay) arrives. Kundan used to be a friend of Kishen & Kishen is intimidated by him (Remember, back to the Future).

Mona (Neha Dhupia) is a common friend to Kishen and Mala. Apparently Kishen & Mala hated each other before marriage as well & only got married because of Kishen's dad Rai Bahadur Dhyanchand (Om Puri) & Mala's mom Bholi Devi (Kiron Kher). Kishen says that Mala has wasted Rs 9 Crores and 35 Lakhs since their marriage, and Mala laments that she has wasted 12054 days of her life. They are on a path to divorce each other.

Bunty travels back in time - specifically Holi 1975 - when Mumbai was called Bombay and gets to meet his parents when they were younger. He is shocked to find his buck-toothed wimpy father, and his mother - a goon-like tomboy. The time machine is damaged when it lands in 1975.

Amidst the terror of Raman Raghav, the impending Emergency of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, banning of multinationals - including Coca Cola - and the Charisma of superstar Rajesh Khanna - he sets about to try and set things right between not only his bickering parents but also his feuding grandparents. Bholi has occupied a flat in Rai's property & refuses to vacate. Kishen is a nerd & is bullied by Kundan. Kundan has been thrice unlucky in love and has given up on the concept of romance.

Mala and Kundan team up to humiliate Kishen every time. One time they corner him and remove his night suit as well.

Bunty intervenes by befriending both Mala and Kishen & then gradually pushing them towards each other by making them see their good sides. Bunty promises Rs 5000 to Kishen if he is able to get Mala to have sex with him. Kishen wants to use the money to convert his traditional restaurant into a trendy joint. Bunty says that Mala is hot and innocent. Bunty tells Mala that she can be an international model if she learns to be humble and graceful. She will have to be delicate and shy.

However, in the process. Kundan starts loving Mala and has decided to marry her. Bunty tells Mala that Kishen has changed and that he is the guy who can care for her and protect her. Mala wants Kishen to propose to her publicly. Meanwhile Kishen refuses to change & frustrates Bunty. Kishen is forced into proposing to Mala but fails miserably and falls unconscious. Kishen tells Bunty that he took on all responsibilities of the house after the death of his mother. He has no one to teach him the ways of the world. He promises to give his own son a much better life. Mala says that a woman has to become heartless, when she loses the protection of her father and when her mother goes to work all day. She says that is the only way she can survive in the world. Her own mother had to endure sexual harassment everywhere in society.

Bunty contacts the young Prof Anthony to fix the time machine, to go back to his own time at some point. Bunty gives Kishen a makeover & bribes the police to lock away Kundan for 7 days. Kishen has worked out his body in the gym & becomes confident of himself. Bunty teaches all about style to Kishen & all about being a good housewife to Mala. Kishen impresses everyone & doesn't even look at Mala, & she is forced to look at him. Kishen even brings Bhiku in line and puts him to work.

Now Kundan is released from jail & pursues Mala. Kundan says that he has found a job as a singer and has a salary of Rs 400 per month. Mala says that she loves singers. He entices Kishen into a singing competition & the winner will get to marry Mala. With the help of Mona (who is now loving Bunty) & Bunty, Kishen beats Kundan, but then Kishen runs away & acts aloof towards Mala. But now Mala has fallen for Kishen hook, line & sinker & even Kishen professes his love for her.

But now Bholi & Rai are against love marriage & Bunty takes them away to get them married in a temple. But Bholi & Rai follow with Kundan & showdown is on a beach. Bholi is against love marriages and Rai is against Kishen marrying Mala. Kundan insults Mala & Kishen beats him up. He then shows courage & declares he will marry Mala. Bholi & Rai fall in line.

Bunty returns to the present in the time machine & finds Kishen & Mala madly in love, Kundan married to Mona & Kundan respecting Kishen. Bunty proposes to Tanya.
