Good, but not great
LaFeeChartreuse3 May 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Well, I wasn't sure how the season finale could possibly top the episode immediately before it, which contained some of the best psychological horror the series has ever portrayed, and the quick answer is: it didn't.

It's not that this wasn't a dramatic, intense, well-paced episode. It was. But compared to "I Am Sylar", or "Cold Snap" for that matter (the two highlights of volume 4 for me), it just seemed like a bit of a letdown.

I did really enjoy the uncertainty created by the shapeshifting, especially with two characters now being capable of it, and never knowing for certain exactly who was who. I thought that element was used very well.

I think the biggest disappointment was the ending -- I just found the whole Sylar-as-Nathan thing somewhat unconvincing. I could see the political side of it making sense -- the idea that if it was known that a US senator had been murdered by someone with powers, there'd be no stopping the persecution. But Angela Petrelli's reason for going along with it -- sorry, NO. I'm a mother myself, and if my son was murdered, the LAST thing I would ever want was his murderer taking his place because "otherwise he's gone forever". Are you kidding me? He's already gone forever -- how on EARTH is having his killer, even a brainwashed version thereof, replacing him going to make that any better? That just completely rang false to me, and I'm betting whatever writer came up with it was not actually a parent.

Plus there's the inconsistency someone else already noted -- Claire's blood can bring people back from the dead. They even had an empty syringe handy from injecting Sylar with anaesthetic. Why not just give Nathan some of Claire's blood? It seems like they went with the option that seemed more twisted and dramatic at the expense of logic.

However, apart from that, it was a very well-done episode. I didn't mind a few loose ends being left untied -- that's part of what keeps a show going from one season to the next.

Speaking of which, the little taste of volume 5 at the end was interesting, and I was not surprised to see the third triplet make an appearance (no, not "the return of Tracy Strauss" -- did people forget that she and Niki were two of three triplets?). I had been reasonably sure she would ever since Tracy's death -- the only question was whether it would be this season or next. It should be interesting to see -- Tracy and Niki were such different characters, plus with Niki having multiple personalities in the first place, that it's fascinating to see the range of different characters played by the same actress in the same series.

All in all, I thought volume 4 was pretty impressive overall -- definitely much better than 2 or 3, and parts of it rivaled volume 1. I'll be looking forward to seeing where it goes from here.

The Ending of Season Three!
maris-272 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I know that some of you might really be sad that the ending of season three wasn't the way you wanted it... But come on it wasn't that bad???...

I though it was a great end well beside that Nathan had to die (the real Nathan)but I guess someone had to be the one to get sacrificed for the greater good... Sadly we cant bring back the real Nathan cause I kinda miss him and I want to see more father-daughter scenes between him and Claire

I love that last scene where they all stand around the fire because it gave me a feeling of a great end that has set its life to us<3

A season of two halves
gridoon202415 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The third season of "Heroes" was divided into two separate volumes: the first, "Villains" (episodes 1-13), has an extremely promising beginning, a great new villain in Robert Forster's Arthur Petrelli, and some episodes that are as good as it gets for the series (like the two-part "Eclipse"). But this volume ends rather abruptly and the next one, "Fugitives" (episodes 14-25), suffers mainly from the inexplicable, and contradictory, transformation of Nathan Petrelli into a bad guy (until he inevitably turns into a good guy again), as well as from sending Sylar off to a purposeless side trip to find his father (even he himself describes their meeting as a disappointment). He still has some awesome moments, thanks to Zachary Quinto's brilliant performance, but by that point they have made him so much more powerful than anyone else, that the only way to keep anyone else alive is to keep him away from the main cast! Hiro & Ando and Mohinder are not particularly well-served by this volume, either. The last episode's get-out-of-jail free card is just plain silly. Now, don't get me wrong, the show never gets less than watchable, but it does veer off-course. *** out of 4 for the season as a whole.

it started so well

Warning: Spoilers
but now, it is completely and utterly ridiculous with the story line.

1. They could have used Claire's blood to save Nathan, the used it on her father who spent longer time "dead" than Nathan

2. The fact that they keep using Sylar as the bad guy shows how bad their creativity is, it's the same each season, Sylar and an organization/company are "the bad guys"

the show has gotten worse after season 1 in my opinion, the only good thing is that they have the guts to kill off some of the characters we follow and love. but besides that, this is just stupid.

I hope I will be able to keep myself from watching the last season but I fear I want to know how this ends since I have gotten this far

A great episode and a great ending to the season!
trommur28 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this episode with average expectations, because the last season hasn't really been that great, or at least the middle part. The last few episodes have been great though. Anyway, I thought this episode just took me back to the first season, I thought it was great! The reference to the first season finale " I love you Pete" " I love you too, Nathan" I thought was great because I always get goosebumps/chills when I watch that episode. This episode got me going, I really wanted to find out who was who with Sylar, and the twist in the middle and the end fired me up! And when the preview to the next season came, with Sylar/Nathan taking up that clock, I was like " Wow, the next season is going to be great!" I'm really a die-hard Heroes fan so every episode I see, I think is great, the fanboy-ism clouds me sometimes from the truth, though the episodes are often great! I loved this episode! I think this season was a lot better than the second season (as do we all) and I look forward to the next season with optimism!

not so memorable
Aidonian29 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
the end of each volume is something to be cherished, remembered. The end of volume one was impressive as was the end of volume 2 and 3. The end of volume 4 was not so memorable. The fight between Sylar and the Petrelli brothers seemed epic, but we could not see it. The death of Nathan was a surprise, but not what happened afterwards. That they used Matt to convince Sylar that he is Nathan. The end of the episode showed promise to the duality of two different personalities within one body like with Nikki and Jessica. But the return of Tracy Strauss was predictable and annoying at best. I have grown tired of Ali Larter character switch a roo in the show and was glad she died. but now we found out she is still alive? all in all a average episode which was designed to be memorable was was not.

Stupid ending to the season
bdmcgregor5 May 2009
Alright first thing i'd like to add. I agree with everyone whose comments included Clair's blood never being used. They made a huge deal out of it in season two, portraying the fact that her blood was the 'miracle cure' to any cut, wound, or disease. Then, they dropped it completely, didn't even try to bring the fact that her blood has that effect, and that it could save Nathan. It could have gone so that they couldn't reach him in time to administer the blood from Claire into his bloodstream, or something along the lines of that idea. However, to completely rule it out, is utter laziness on the writers part. I'm almost positive I could have written that episode script with both arms tied behind my back, and have it turn out better then that. Serious disappointment in the way they ended this season. Might be the deal breaker for the end of my Heroes viewing pleasure.

Villains...pure villain like
MrEnterprise28 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Oh wow, the whole writing staff is to blame on this one. I found this too be one of the most upsetting episodes, not just in this show but in all my favorite shows ever. The plot holes are so outstanding in this show, its really remarkable. I do not understand how some of these ideas/scripts gets thrown into production...is there a proofreader? I mean really is there? First of all how did they find mo hinder and Noah? second, why did they not go into Danko's situation at all at the end? What happened to him? Fine don't show us but make an offhand comment, "hey he still is alive"...something! Third, What happened with Hiro? I mean they danced around the notion of telling us why his power was killing him....than he like passed out or something, maybe the writing staff did pass out around this time and monkeys took over, but they don't show why he is okay or if he even is, which was a huge insult to everyone I am sure. Fourth, I knew Nathan's character was coming to an end but.....This writing staff left a huge huge huge huge plot hole back in season 2, when they used Clairs blood to bring Noah back to life. Than they used the same situation to heal Nathnas wounds later on with Peters blood...Sooooooo WHAT THE EFF?!?!?! You don't have to end a main characters plot line like that, that is plain ludicrous and quite annoying. I get that there translating the script into what ties into all the way back to season one. The future that was seen in season one is slowly coming a reality I get I get unless I am wrong which would also make sense. Fifth, Why did they cut away from the fighting scene? That doesn't make fans happy...and to show a throat being cut and not fighting is plain stupid ha ha wow ohhh ohhh I hated it so much! Sixth, I will give them something, the twist to make sylar into Nathan was clever but we as fans have to wait for that to play out to make sense so I may be wrong on this one.

I could keep going but I am starting annoy myself reminiscing about the crap i just watched. So in closing I would like to say that this show has the most plot holes and nonsense that I have even scene in a show. I still love this show but I just don't understand what happened to all the greatness that Season One and some of Two had. It has gone down dramatically since the writers strike and I wish the best of luck to the monkeys that are now the writers of this show.

Volume 4: Slight improvement on Vol 3 but still messy and full of lazy, convenient writing
bob the moo1 May 2009
It has been a while since I saw something in this show that really engaged me but yet somehow I am still watching it. That said, I did watch the first half of season 3 in the same way as I came to the second – record it off BBC2 each week then watch all the episodes as quickly as possible of the course of a week or so. The reason for this is because I suspect if I had to remember to watch it each week (and also wait a week for the next one) then I would probably have bailed out of it. Despite my amazement at the car crash of the first half of season 3 I came back for the rest (which, in keeping with the "up itself" tone of the show is entitled "Volume 4").

Volume 4 came to the UK and US with the same apologetic tone from the makers and the usual talk of "reboot" that seems to come with each new season or part season of Heroes. Not sure how many more times it can do but because at the moment creator Tim Kring is starting to look like a terrible magician, continually picking the wrong card from the deck and asking "is this your card?", "is this your card?" and never getting it right. I thought that perhaps this was the card that is correct but the very early episodes of V4 suggested that it was actually going to be more of the same. The story painfully moves in another direction by using coincidence, convenience and simple lazy writing to get things going. In theory the overall narrative here about persecution and capturing of those with powers could have been laced with intensity and intelligence but quickly we are told that it will not be this way. It is hurt by how obvious and simple it is whether it be the obvious orange jumpsuits (which may have been clever once but years after Guantanamo has become a lazy metaphor) or just how cluttered and messy the flow of each episode is. I understand what they are trying for, because the show knows that if it can just make enough "stuff" happen then maybe it will engage by virtue of the sheer volume of stimuli it is handing viewers.

I suppose this approach works in 24, which relies wholly on hooking in the moment but even that show knows it is not as easy to do this as it sometimes appears. In Heroes we have the problem of multiple characters all of equal standing and generally there are so many balls in the air at once that having them all constantly moving just causes a mess of blurring in front of one's eyes. It doesn't help either that at least some of the threads/characters cannot really cope with the requests put on them. It gets a bit better towards the end because one thread (Sylar of course) comes to the fore and gives the other characters something to rally around, but this is too little too late and even then it still has the same problems inherent in it. None of it is helped by it being infused by this terrible "worthy" air brought by the music and the awful narration because this only highlights how weak the material really is. It sort of goes without saying that the cast are not that great – with most of them struggling with the unreasonable demands of the material. Coleman, Oka, Quinto and a few others do well but Ventimiglia, Panettiere, Ramamurthy, Pasdar, Rose and many others cannot do much at all. Zeljko Ivanek is a nice addition but he is essentially just repeating the same sort of plot that Coleman's Noah once effective led.

Volume 4 is better than volume 2 and volume 3 but that is not much in the way of praise. The plots are messy and rely on convenience and, to be frank, lazy writing, to move things along – most of the time not entirely sure what it is doing. It is not quite a car crash but certainly nobody has been able to clear the previous car crash off the road and, while improved, volume 4 is very much a wreck. I'm not sure if I shall bother with volume 5 on the basis of the last 2 seasons – particularly since season 1 was the show at its best and that wasn't amazing or anything. I was hoping that volume 4 would do something to make me eager to return, but sadly it only confirmed the doubt in my head.

One of the worst episodes in large pile. As a season finale? Horrible!
nealvan5572 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing gets me more riled up than when a show with rules and continuity chooses to ignore everything it spent two seasons building and enforcing. Why couldn't they bring Nathan back with Clair's blood? How can someone unaffected by death, be brainwashed? Mrs. Petrelli's character is great when not just being ruthless, heartless, and conniving. Why did they always say the 'Company' began with Petrelli and Linderman? Wouldn't it have begun with Kensai? He had the ability of healing and immortality beginning in 1671, right? Linderman has the power of healing. Only one person was healed by him.... Nathan's wife. Didn't anyone think Sylar's brain would return to its 'normal' state? I could go on picking this show apart, but I'll end here.
