A Trailblazer
Jean-Daniel Cadinot was a trailblazer in crossing the frontier from gay simulated sex to explicit erotica, and he had a vision of making this as uninhibited and joyous as he could. In ' C'est la Vie ' he opens with a cheeky, smiling face and as the title implies, 'It's Life'. He shows us clearly that life implies a freedom of expression concerning the nude male body. No one is abused, or debased in the film and as a director he was a perfectionist in showing images in such a beautiful way that it is difficult to be offended. He died relatively young, and if he had gone into conventional film he would rightly be considered one of France's best directors as quite simply he had an eye for detail that was equal to that other controversial director, Walerian Borowczyk. Both directors (Borowczyk was heterosexual) contributed to the fun, and natural pleasures of the human envelope we all live in. In my opinion and with this film there are certainly no spoilers, we see a fantasy world with a clear perception of reality.
