A Rare and Sweet Glimpse of Gay South Korea
steve-butten7 February 2021
Although it's not illegal to be a gay man in South Korea, it is frowned upon and I have found outright expression of gay feelings to be quite rare in the vast catalogue that is the current wave of K-dramas; finding instances where one of these extraordinary K-pop singer/actors might expose his chest is a tough one, more's the pity. They are nearly all as fit as a butcher's dog. So it is refreshing to find this little vignette openly telling a lovely, if somewhat lumpy little gay love story. The story is simplicity itself: boy musician falls in love with another boy musician and the outcome is inevitable. The acting is a bit forced at times, but one can forgive these lovely guys, just because they are so much eye candy. No Oscars here, but cuteness abounds; enjoy it for the sake of it.

It's simple, but beautiful!
ratanacheng15 February 2021
It's better not to expect much from the film. It's not a new thing actually, but you'll still love it. It's really peaceful, romantic, and heartwarming love story. It also shows us how music connects people, builds relationships, and makes them aware of the right path in life.

Thanks to all the film crews, and the two protagonists that stole my heart.

Cute, Sweet ...WELL DONE
JJ-Chi14 February 2021
Nothing great or Oscar-Worthy ...but sweet story that flows smoothly and is produced well.

Acting is not the greatest, but believable.

I completely disagree w/the "1-star" negative reviews posted here; especially from people who believe "Your Name Engraved Herein" was a great film (I found that boring and falls flat). This film may have a simple plot ...but this is engaging and entertaining (the other is NOT).

Can't physically diss such a sweet movie.

Slow-moving, simplistic, uneven in places... but so incredibly sweet, with hints of genuinely interesting character backstories, and absolutely gorgeously shot & lit. The titular song is gorgeous too.

Not my fav lgbt movie, but...
vzhuk4 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We should remember it's a South Korea lgbt movie, so no sex or close intimacy scenes. Even in kdramas they don't kiss like real people. But this movie wasn't that interesting as I hope at first. Maybe they should as more characters, maybe evil a$$ dude who wants ruin their relationships etc..........but music/songs are good, maybe 'cause I like ballads.

But can we appreciate that they tried to make a lgbt movie in SK? Because they are still kind of strict about non-heterosexual couples.

But it's was nice to watch it, kinda soft and calm and relaxing.

Yeah it was gay, doesn't mean it was good though
kimirays26 May 2022
Watched this last night and to be completely honest,, it was just okay. It's a good movie to watch in the background and it was a good story to tell in general it just wasn't told in the best way, continuity errors, time skips, and characters that showed barely any growth or change at all. Some plot points are just left not talked about or ignored all together, which can be okay if it left the audience asking questions, but the questions I was left with were more like "huh? What? Since when did..?" overall it was okay if your looking for a gay romance you got it! Just don't pay too much attention to the little stuff.

Couldn't have been more boring
szemeteskuka7214 January 2023
I'm usually all for BLs and I tend to be less "stict" when I critique them. I don't mind the bad acting, clichés, the cheesiness or the kind of random plot lines that kind of come out of nowhere.

However unfortunately this film lacked all the good qualities of the genre.

The catchers were incredibly blend, we knew little to nothing about them or why they like each other (besides their shared passion for music). The story wasn't intense or exciting not even in the way the most "basic" BLs tend to be.

The first half was quite alright, but instead of building on them in the second half, they just decided to fill it up with incredibly long scenes where basically nothing happens. We watch the main characters talking to each other, with music playing underneath, but we may never know what they talk about or in what way they manage to bond.

The story was nothing unexpected or new, which is fine, but we get nothing in exchange, no extraordinary chemistry or comedy or character building, nothing. The second half basically feels like the longest music video I've ever seen.

I'm only giving it a 3, because I did enjoy the first half to an extent and the music was alright, but I definitely don't recommend watching it, unless you really just want to put something on in the background while you do something else because even then, every time you glance at the screen, you'd know exactly what's going on.

Not exactly Best Picture, but sweet & cute.
robtyrrell-986072 February 2021
So, is this movie going to win Best Picture? No.

Another one not to be judged by Western standards: pacing is kinda slow and clumsy, writing (translations?) a bit forced at times and acting isn't exactly in Meryl Streep territory.

But the leads are sweet, have good chemistry and the point of the movie is a positive one. If it makes some gay 16-year-old South Korean kid feel good about themselves, then mission accomplished.

And if the Hallmark Channel can crank out schlocky pieces of fluff by the dozen, then the producers of this are certainly allowed to make something that's a lot better by comparison.

Terrible Film
lilyg-932137 February 2021
This movie was extremely draggy, with tragic acting and was a total waste of my time. If you want to watch a lgbq movie done right, watch 'Your Name Engraved Herein'- THAT was a great film and very moving and realistic. This one was abysmal.

this is the cute, simple queer love story that I've waited for my entire life
juniorisntonline16 November 2021
I say this movie was a pretty solid movie. The beginning was a little slow and I could ask for more scenes of Sangyi & Insu together, but overall it was a really solid movie.

They were a cute little meet-cute situation. Where Insu was a great singer-songwriter, Sangyi had a great talent for harmonizing with him.

Acting was a little unnatural at times, but I personally found it tolerable.

But this is the kind of queer love story I've been waiting for my entire life. As someone who is both Asian (hmong) and a lesbian, I think all my life I've been waiting for just cheesy romance movies with people who like the same sex, just like me.

This movie may not have been absolutely phenomenal, but it's enough of a good movie that it feels good.

I appreciate that they didn't have to add in homophobia as a plot point because honestly, as someone who is homosexual, I think I'm tired of having our media consumed in homophobia, where its all gloom and doom.

Overall, if you're in the mood for a cute, cheesy love story that just happens to be between 2 men, this is the movie for you. Nothing ground breaking, but just a really nice story about how 2 people fell in love through music. Simple, but very important representation for the future of LGBTQ+ representation.

And goddamnit, I've waited my life for these movies where queer people can just be people and fall in love. Representation is getting better and better as the years pass by, hopefully one day I don't have to be back to beg for more queer media.

literally the worst movie i've ever seen
leiel-0230622 November 2021
Plot didnt move. No character development. You have no idea who characters are or whats happening. Was very confused throughout the whole thing and acting was not good. Its like they tried to put every cliche romance troupe in one film and it became this but even worse than youre imagining.

Will they.... won't they...?
SDSurfDude14 March 2021
This is a touching stand up and cheer film. The moment I saw the lead actors I was I love. The entire time we're not sure... will they? It's a delightful movie with a great soundtrack. I loved it.

Natural Acting, Inspiring Music
doug-030608 January 2022
I don't understand Korean at all, but this is now my number 2 romantic movie of all time. The music was superb, it inspired every scene. The natural emotions in the 2 main actors faces, Kang In Soo and Lee Sang, especially the eyes, were intense. The main song, Wish You, is so loving and their voices are so connected. I would like to buy the DVD and soundtrack, but it's not available in the US.

Simple, sweet, beautiful.
pandorasbox-122 April 2022
Reminded me a bit of an LGBT version of Once. It would have been nice if there were more music in it like that film, but the song was really good. Beautiful story and so good to see an LGBT film from S. Korea. Hope it helps with the dawning of a new era/attitude about the community. The film doesn't get too bogged down/heavy handed about the strict nature of the agency relationships and parental expectations. These are key features in the film, but the film doesn't dwell on the topics and the sweet relationship that develops comes easily. Very enjoyable watch.

Gay version of Crazy Rich Asians
ctplus20 December 2021
Obviously some won't agree but I thought the story line (ordinary average Joe vs super wealth/powerful) was well done. There were quite a few similarities to Crazy Rich Asians. (yes I know it's Chinese) but the issues raised seemed close culturally. The director did an amazing job of saying something without saying it or implying it a few times. I thought the actors did a fine job.
