Carried Away premiered at the Texas Theater in Oak Cliff, Texas - the same theater that Presidential assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested at. Ironically, at the beginning of this film Ed Franklin (Gabriel Horn) explains his moustache as being for a play in which he plays another Presidential Assassin, John Wilkes Booth.
The scenes in El Paso were actually shot in the south Dallas neighborhood of Oak Cliff. The Pharmacy is located on Jefferson Ave. - the same street where Carried Away premiered at the Texas Theater.
While shooting the driving scenes between Ed and Ganny, director Tom Huckabee would lay on the floor of the back seat of the station wagon. The sound recordist would lay in the cargo back of the vehicle and the car would follow a lead car containing the Director of Photography and Assistant Director.
Huckabee, prone to falling asleep in a moving vehicle, would regularly fall asleep during takes and the actors would continue ad-libbing before the sound recordist or AD called cut and woke Huckabee up.
The role of Rex Franklin was offered to Bill Paxton, a long time friend of director Tom Huckabee. Paxton was shooting Big Love at the time and was unable to participate.
Director Tom Huckabee commissioned most of the crew from the film, Night Crawlers, to make Carried Away. Both films were lensed by Ron Gonzalez, both films were art directed by Joel Farrell. Gabriel Horn is a producer on both films and Benjamin Wilbanks directed Night Crawlers and co-edited Carried Away with Sam Crutsinger.
