- While crossing through a small town, Jim is detained for a minor traffic violation. Then the lawman relates Jim with the runaway Kate and decides to arrest her too, but she manages to escape.
- Kate and Jim are camping out near a small town, they meet a young boy named Danny, he invites them back to his house for breakfast in exchange for Jim tending to his injured dog. They realize the boy is living alone without his parents (his mother has deserted him), nevertheless they say goodbye to Danny and continue on their way. While driving through town Kate and Jim are pulled over for a broken tail light by the town sheriff, this leads to the sheriff asking for Kates ID and realizing that something is amiss.... Jim runs for it to divert the sheriff while Kate drives away. Jim is apprehended and taken to the city jail. Kate returns to Danny's house and hears on the radio that Jim has been taken into custody, awaiting the FBI's arrival. Kate formulates a plan to free Jim, Danny also helps. While in jail Jim tells the sheriff that he and Kate have been setup, after initially being skeptical the sheriff starts to believe Jim's story. Shaw is also lurking, hoping to take a shot at Jim during his being handed over to the FBI, this creates confusion at the scene. Kate intervenes by driving by in a truck, which Jim jumps in the back of. The pair of them end up back at Danny's home with Shaw in pursuit still taking shots, who is then scared off by the arrival of the sheriff. The sheriff, upon seeing Shaw shooting at Jim and Kate is now convinced that Jim was telling the truth and tells them to catch a freight train over a nearby bridge leaving in 20 minutes that will get them safely out of town. The sheriff then tells Danny that he cannot allow him to live without parental supervision but "until he can figure something out" Danny can come and stay with him.
