This show has a great cast and interesting stories that aren't even close to realistic most of the time. This episode is a great example. I like it despite the undeniable fact that it's overly dramatic and unoriginal, which is a perfectly good reason not to like it. But, getting bent out of shape because they're FICTIONAL story includes bad cops is kind of ignorant. Of course they're not saying all cops are bad. Just like they're not saying all people have tumors that make them forget who their children are. If they only put the good cops or people without tumors in the show it would be boring, and that's what you would complain about. Maybe just don't watch a show that's set in the real world if you don't want real world issues to crop up now and then.

It's TV so people chill out!

So NA has always pulled on heart strings and this one does it a couple of times. I think the reviewers who declared this episode "too woke" and were upset, haven't been racially profiled in their entitled lives. It's a thing and many people have to somehow be nice and polite when they are stopped and questioned for living their lives. I actually thought that using out of work bouncers was a good idea as they are trained to de-escalate situations and let's be fair, the police aren't trained as social workers either. It's an unfair power dynamic in a public hospital and I understand what the storyline was laying out. The bouncers might not even be seen in the next episode so chill out.
Counteracting the White Reviews

That all reflect the fact they cannot, will never, understand what it is to be a minority. Therefore it must be wrong!
Alejandro Hernandez's ED scene, trying to explain how minorities feel to Dr. Bloom, really showcased his talent. It's sickening-the truth, the emotion in his words are clearly not understood. They hit me. I don't review often, but stopped episode solely due to that scene.
Signed, educated, upper middle class white woman who doesn't need to work.

Cliché warning...

Cliché from me that is. If you don't like it don't watch it!
Lots of reviews complaining about NA being "too woke" "too liberal" "too political" You have plenty of other choices, on many platforms. I don't go and review all the "reality" shows I hate by telling them to read the room or that they're tone-deaf. (coughcoughKimKardashiancough) NA is not the best medical drama I've ever watched, nor is it the worst. I'm interested in the political/social issues they cover, and if nothing else it makes me grateful to live in a country with universal health care. And that I'm cis and look European....

What nonsense!

I usually enjoy the show. Yes, as a cynical Brit it can be rather too slushy and sentimental at times (cringe-worth even) but I enjoy the characters and generally the stories are worthwhile.
This sucked.
I echo people's comments regarding the negative manner in which the police are portrayed. As a left-wing TV show advocating the advantages of a free healthcare system to a nation capable of the moronic 'kill the bill' movement of a few years ago, it needs to tread a more delicate line than this not to appear laughably naive and cliched.
However: my gripe concerns the treatment of the mother with the brain lesions. This woman remains totally rational (at least we are not told she isn't) and so surely she can comprehend that she has a condition which will make it impossible for her to recognise her son's face (or anyone else's presumably??) Rather than seek to explain this to her, instead she is informed that her son is dead!! Can you imagine the law suit if she found the hospital had lied to her about this! Then (and apparently she feels much better after she hears he is dead) her son is introduced to her as a perfect stranger in the hope and expectation that they will probably get along! Does she really not recognise his mannerisms, walk, voice, clothes, etc. Etc?? What utter tripe. I would love to know how lazy, implausible writing such as this gets approved and filmed. In fact it was so bad I may struggle to watch any further episodes.
Shame.

SHAME ON YOU NEW AMSTERDAM!
jeersNcheers1 April 2021
Very offensive treatment of a necessary part of life in the entire world! This show has always been a little too liberal / sappy for my taste, but the plot usually makes it worth it. And I've loved this show. But I'm offended, and the way I see it, America stops and cries for you every time a person is offended! NA fails to remember that millions of Americans either are police, or they are related by blood, marriage, neighbor, co-worker, lover, friend, and / or relative to police. As long as there is evil and crime in the world, we need police and soldiers! Unless of course you want to go back to vigilantes; but my recollection is that they didn't make use of warrants, trials, and appeals.
PS As another viewer commented, how quickly 'they' forgot the heroics of our police and fire at 9/11!

Ready to choke on some woke-a-cola?
polite-4569216 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ready to choke on some woke-a-cola? This episode of New Amsterdam has almost zero to do with medicine. The main point seems to be that "trans people" do not feel safe around cops.
Max and Helen are some combination of emotionally unstable, whiny, and irresponsible yet they somehow are the #1 and #2 "leaders" at the hospital.

I'm sorry but when do we hide/lie things from our kids?
Inphatuation8029 March 2023
This episode started out really great but then we end up where Max is with his daughter visiting his wife/mother of his child's grave. I get that everyone grieves in their own way, including me, having lost two parents... he left his daughter playing nearby her mother's grave and not really telling her why they were visiting the graveyard. If it were me, C'mon... SHOW your daughter her mother's grave and why you're both visiting the cemetery. Truth rules over all. I would never have my daughter believe anything else other than the truth as to why where we are or what we're doing at the moment. Wrong on Max.
