The San Antonio-filmed scenes (with the exception of the frame story) were originally intended to be a stand-alone movie, and were filmed two years before the Edinburgh scenes.
In the original cut, the movie opened at night with James accosting two young women and forcing them to listen as he read his story from an old book. At the end, James reveals the fang-marks on his neck and the girls run away, screaming. This was replaced with the scenes of James alone in a field in the Director's Cut.
