- A lonely junior high girl befriends an orphaned boy classmate whom everyone think is retarded, not knowing he has a female guardian angel in his bedroom.
- Outcast by most of the children in the junior high school he attends, Tobey Marshall has been deeply traumatized by the death of his parents at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Living with his Uncle Nick and Jannah, Tobey is a loner who has created his own world where he believes he is protected by a guardian angel. A young girl named Suzy, whose own beliefs are in question, befriends Tobey and, by doing so, discovers that they have more in common than she ever expected. Suzy has captured the fancy of Jim Doder, a popular basketball player at school, who leads a double life as a gang leader in a series of local home burglaries. When Suzy rejects Jim's affections, and her relationship with Tobey continues, Jim makes life difficult for the both of them. After one of Doder's gang is arrested in a botched burglary attempt, Tobey is framed. In the dramatic and exciting climax, Tobey must prove his innocence to Suzy and the whole school by facing reality and confronting Jim Doder in public.—Robert Alaniz
- Outcast by most of the children in the junior high school he attends in Frankfort Square, Tobey Marshall (Ryan Sotzen) has been deeply traumatized by the death of his parents at the World Trade Center on 9/11. Living with his Uncle Nick (Gary Gow) and Jannah (Katherine Trost), Tobey is a loner who spends his time playing chess against himself, reading the Bible, talking to squirrels, and conversing with a grown woman in his bedroom (a guardian angel) whom only he can see.
Outside of school, buddies Jim Doder (Matthew Vuckovich) and Ryan Richards (Clayton Carr) check out the girls, which sparks jealousy in Vicky. Jim has obvious interest in Suzy, which is not reciprocated.
Jim arrives home, turns on the television, and finds his mother has been entertaining a male friend in the bedroom.
In health class the next day, Suzy Stanely (Therese Boyich) and the teacher define compassion for the class.
After school, Tobey sees a plane flying overhead and remembers his mom's words before she and Dad left for New York. If she should not return, Tobey would never be alone because God will always be with him.
Back at school, Tobey is bullied. Jim, the school's star athlete, tells Tobey that there is a 4:00 p.m. curfew for retards. Tobey thanks him and rushes home, only to be corrected by his uncle.
Suzy learns from Abby that Toby's parents were killed in the 9/11 tragedy. Spotting Tobey (and offended when Abby calls him a sympathy celebrity), she tries to talk to him, but at the mention of his parents, he runs away. Suzy mentions Tobey to her father and wonders if he is mentally ill. Suzy approaches Toby again while he is playing chess by himself. She declares that she and Tobey are friends. Suzy and Tobey go to Culver's. Suzy talks a lot and Tobey seems less than enthused, but once home his interest is revealed.
Jim sinks a three-pointer to win the basketball game for the Meteors in an away game.
At home, Jim has a strained relationship with his mother (Erica Sharp). When she cheated on her husband and Jim discovered them, he told his father two months later. Now she can only cry about it.
Jim beats up a kid at school and his shutter-bug friend Ryan gleefully snaps a picture of the fallen and bloodied peer. Classmate Larry rushes in to report a conversation that suggests there was a witness to his and Jim's latest escapades (attracting everyone's attention in the immediate area). Jim shoves Larry against a wall by his throat and orders him to shut up while Ryan dutifully distracts everyone else with pictures on his digital camera. Regardless, Vicky will not be distracted from watching Jim threatening Larry's life.
Tobey awkwardly approaches Suzy when she is with her friends Delaney Arnold (Maura Antas), Abigail James (Ellen Hogan) and Tess (Amanda Littleton) and suddenly blurts out "Suzy is my friend." The group laughs and leaves except for Suzy, who remains behind, admonishing him for not letting her decide when they'll talk again - but she then decides it's okay for him to do so.
Spending at least the next five days with him, Suzy discovers that - in being alone a lot of the time - they have more in common than she ever expected. Tobey tells her about the angel he talks to and about the song "Bitterblue," which his mother liked. Suzy meets Tobey's Uncle Nick. He is no fan of Suzy's mom (Pamela Tierney), whom he blames for losing a car sales job, and tells Tobey he is not supposed to have girls in his room.
The next day, the health teacher discusses delusions as a symptom of depression. Suzy questions if seeing angels is delusional. Later on, Tobey talks to Suzy about types of angels.
Next day at school, Suzy gets in a fight with a friend who needles her about dating retarded boys.
Tobey buys Suzy some blue flowers and they play chess in the park. Jim looks on jealously.
Late at night, Jim and Ryan meets Nick in a parking lot. They discuss the merchandise that Jim and his friends steal for Nick, which he later sells. Nick brings up the curfew bit and tells Jim to leave Tobey alone, and to keep his mind on business.
Practicing hoop shots in the park the next day, Jim spots Suzy sitting alone on a bench. He offers her a red rose. Susie reluctantly accepts it. Under his inquiry, she admits to finding him unreal, so Jim tells her the story of how he broke up his parents. Suzy withholds her sympathy, lays the blame for the divorce on Jim, gives the flower back and leaves.
From this point on, Jim makes life difficult for both her and Tobey. Jim gives Tobey a beating, calling it a stupidity test, to the amusement of all onlookers except Vicky. Hearing the fight, Suzy rushes in.
Suzy takes Tobey to her house and, because of the blood, cleans up his wounds in the basement. She says there's never a guardian angel around when you need them. Toby retorts the angel sent Suzy. What Suzy considers is coincidental (staying late after school because her paper was missing and missing her ride home), Tobey is convinced it was the work of his guardian angel. After Tobey limps home, Suzy finds her missing paper in her knapsack and begins to wonder about Tobey's guardian angel.
Despite the circumstances, Suzy gets in trouble with her parents for bringing Tobey home when they weren't there. Despite his injury and her Christian good deed, she is grounded.
Tobey forgets to feed his goldfish named Mom and Dad and they die. He is heartbroken. Jannah comforts him.
A front page story appears in the paper about local home invasions, which makes Nick nervous. He not only tells Jim, Ryan and Larry not to swipe CDs anymore (as they don't sell) and concentrate on computer stuff but to lay low for a while for police interest to cool down, and to stop coming by unannounced. Jim is offended by this and, as leader, plans to do what he wants.
At school, all the kids treat Suzy differently. Jim's would-be girlfriend Vicki Damon (Samantha Kuebler) and her friends corner Suzy demanding she stay away from Jim Doder, which Suzy declares isn't a problem. Even Suzy's relationship with her best friend Abigail is strained, so Abigail shows Suzy a picnic table with Suzy's and Tobey's name carved inside a heart. Suzy says she just wanted to be Tobey's friend. Jim looks on and smirks.
When Jim gets home. his dad (Jack Guasta) is there with the news that he and his wife are getting a divorce. Jim is not happy about it. Jim wants to go with his dad to Arizona, but he's told it's all for the better if he stays with his mom for now. Jim asks who this is better for, because it certainly isn't for him. No one offers an answer, and Jim leaves.
Jimmy, Ryan and Larry Morgan (Chris Casper) set out to another burglary job - at Abigail's house, as it turns out. Ryan finds a digital camera and begins to take flash photos of their exploits, partially blinding Jim. Abigail's father, springing out of the bathroom, surprises them and grabs Larry. Jim and Ryan run away and nervously deliver their take to Nick, calling it stuff left over from last time and willing to accept payment later. When Nick gets called away and asks them to wait, Jim flees. Left alone, Ryan drops Abigail's Ipod in a box and runs after Jim.
Later, Toby finds the Ipod and, liking its angel sticker, takes it to school where the kids are abuzz with the news of Abigail's robbery. Delaney leads Abigail away, at which point Suzy encourages Tess (who still echoes everything Delaney says and wears) to think for herself.
Ryan reports to Jim that Larry was kept all night by the cops but is home now. He supposes that if Larry talked, the police would already have come for him and Jim When Larry arrives at school, Jim and Ryan corner him in the bathroom and threatened him. They all decide to tell the police that Tobey was working with Larry and Nick.
Meanwhile, Suzy finds Tobey and tells him she wasn't honest with him. She wanted to see what made them the same because they were both seemingly alone. She tells Tobey that she doesn't believe in angels and may not even believe in God. Then she sees Abigail's Ipod in Tobey's hand and runs away.
Vickie tracks down Jim and tells him that Gary Donota (Vic Kuligoski) is spreading rumors about him.
That night. Detective Pardo (Michael Stoskus) stops at Tobey's house with a warrant and arrests Nick. Jannah helps Tobey escape out the window. Tobey runs to Suzy's house. She tells Tobey that she saw Abigail's Ipod in his possession. Tobey tells Suzy they arrested his uncle and claims he did not steal anything. Suzy declares that she doesn't believe in anyone anymore. Tobey returns home and Jannah shows him where Nick's stash of stolen items had been. Forgotten on the floor: the stolen digital camera
Jim is about to beat up Gary Donata when Tobey arrives holding aloft the camera which will show who is really guilty of the burglaries. As Gary (forgotten) runs off to find a teacher, Ryan wrestles the camera away from Tobey, then Jim delivers a beat down. On the ground, Jannah appears and encourages Tobey to get up. She compares the fight to that of David and Goliath in the Bible. Tobey delivers a sucker punch and the fight continues. When Jim grabs Tobey, Tobey tells him that he downloaded the pictures off the camera and emailed them to the police. Suzy jumps on Jim's back, just as he is about to deliver a blow. She is thrown off and hits her head on a rock. Tobey pleads for Jannah to help. Mr. Warren (Ken Evans), a teacher, finally arrives and requests an ambulance. Suzy appears unconscious but awakens to see Jannah glowing and lifting into the sky. Suzy sits up and confesses she saw an angel. Tobey says what she saw is whatever she believes it is. The police arrive and take Jim and Ryan away. Jannah tells Tobey he'll never be alone.
