Very well acted, well written and a great story. Could have done with knowing what son was in prison for and his sentence?

Episode 1

Warning: Spoilers
Time is the third Sean Bean collaboration with writer Jimmy McGovern.

The first led to Bean being nominated for a BAFTA. On the second occasion Bean was visibly shocked to have won a BAFTA Best Actor award.

Bean is now a veteran of the film and television industry. He knows with McGovern that he will be challenged.

The first episode reminded me of Scum. The BBC Play for Today that was banned for some years and remade as a feature film.

It shows a grim side to prisons. Mark Cobden (Sean Bean) is a new inmate who has been sent to four years in prison after killing a man by dangerous driving. He is a teacher nearing 60 and ill prepared for life on the inside.

Cobden needs to adjust to prison life fast and that includes bullying from other inmates. His own cell mate is a disturbed man called Bernard.

The second story involves Eric McNally (Stephen Graham) a veteran prison officer who is under pressure. An inmate has found out that his son is doing time at another prison.

This was harrowing, disturbing and bleak. By the end of the first episode Cobden has placed himself in danger by not standing up to a bully.

As for McNally he finds out that wherever he places his son, someone will find out.

Taming of the screw

I shouldn't really have been surprised at how good this was but, with a Jimmy McGovern script and a top northern cast, this was always going to be good but, what I couldn't believe was that this was screened in June when viewing figures are generally low.

Sean Bean is the star a first timer in prison and Stephen Graham plays a screw with baggage.

The prison visiting scene was probably the best with the lags putting on a positive face for their loved ones but you could see their faces and hearts drop as the visitors left.

So pleased the whole series is on the iPlayer. I couldn't wait a week for the next installment after watching this.

I had forgotten that BBC could make great dramas like this Well worth the licence fee.

An amazing start.

Mark Cobden is sent to Prison for the first time, and very quickly learns that he's in for a rough time, seemingly a sensitive man, surrounded by career criminals.

Not one for the faint hearted, but in this first part, I'd say very loudly that Jimmy McGovern has done it again, I was absolutely enthralled by it. It's loaded with violence and terror, it seems to show the terrifying reality if Prison life, the result is a compelling hour of drama.

Incredible acting, Stephen Graham and Sean Bean are flawless, but Aneurin Barnard was astonishingly good here as Bernard, what a talent that guy is.

It's surprising that The BBC is able to come up with something this good, wow, 10/10.
