Very watchable, interesting storyline

I don't get all the bad reviews on this show! I really enjoyed it, haven't read the book so maybe that's why(?). Anyway, I thought the acting was good, especially the 2 leads, and the production and scenery were great, very 'creepy' at times as intended! Definitely give it a go, great Aussie thriller & whodunnit :-)

Not predictable.

Finished episode 5 and not quite sure where it's going still which is good. Yes Nicole Chamoun is a little flat at times but Thomas Jane is up to his usual standard. Not sure what issue one would have with his accent, after all he is actually American. Have a look at his other other work, that's his real voice.

Very good Aussie series

Troppo started slowly and the American character needs a while to warm up to him.

However, I stuck around and the storyline became addictive.

Casting is good.

From the shocking opening croc-attack to the finale closing credit, this is a masterclass in storytelling. A well-paced plot, beautifully outlining the setting and characters with natural, realistic dialogue.

Amanda (Nicole Chamoun) is a rash, resourceful, social-outlier, Ted (Thomas Jane) is a grouchy ex-detective, each is haunted by past tragedy. An odd detective duo that are like a bickering father/daughter and delightfully brought to life; they doggedly follow where the case leads.

Highly recommended, one of the very few I have awarded 10*!

Excellent - From Episode 2 Onwards . . .

It takes at least the first episode to find its feet, but once the initially overly-mannered performances and frantic scene-setting settle down (which, from the comments, seem to have dissuaded some reviewers from pushing ahead with watching to its conclusion), this series develops into a remarkably atmospheric (and very well acted) drama. A top quality cast - with some top-notch Aussie actors in supporting roles - excellent production values, and superb use of local topography, make it worth your time. The only gripe I had, was that the final scene was dramatic enough without any music playing over it to heighten the impact. Only avoid if you don't like crocodiles - or snakes.

FNQ as claustrophobia

I can see that Troppo is going to settle down into quite a good mystery/thriller. Good to see that it isn't held back by cultural cringe (although the Korean family portrayal is a bit 'paint by numbers').

It captures a claustrophobic element of Far North Queensland - the tropics seem to bring out those qualities. Only 3 eps in, and it remains to be seen if the script is going to deliver any real surprises or if it will be a procedural 'bad company over-reaches'.

Update: Although Troppo broadcast one of its deceits too early it managed to conceal others, and arguably saved its best for the last couple of episodes, by which time the ensemble were more settled into their roles. Well worth a 7 and a binge.

entertaining exotic thriller

Very good performance from Nicole Chamoun, the short hair enhances her natural beauty. The scenario with the 3 murders solved is clever and the end is open enough for a season 2 which could see the rehabilitation of the detective, let's hope it happens.

I was excited to finally see lyons in an ozzy production ( after his performance in 7 seconds) it's hard to beat. He was good along with the relatively new Nicole Chamoun. Along with Carloline Brazier ( rake) and sme others tho Thomas Jayne is miscast. This is a extremely slow burner that has two interesting story lines tho that are when revealed I didn't even care anymore because of the way they're told etc. It's a decent watch for the evening but I would have watched the series I've been watching next season if I knew now.

Excellent suspence whodunit

This was a great series. Very different from the usual American fare. Acting is brilliant especially the main characters. The story is excellently convoluted you have no idea what's going on the first 4 episodes and everything you think is going on turns out different. Everything that seems incidental turns out to mean something. Really well done.

The setting itself plays it's own part in the story and the crocs oh the crocs....

It's like riding a bike

Watching Nicole Chamoun trying to stop her bike while channelling Fred Flintstone was the best part of each episode. She plays her character with determination and style. Loved her so much in this role. Way too many unanswered questions.

Love Thomas Jane and he was great in this, very hot in his hat. Female lead was fascinating and kept it different. Story kept me guessing and held my interest.

Something not quite right

A mystery with lots too many quirks making it hard to follow for me. Not because the acting sometimes seemed not quite strong enough, nor because the scenery was too cliched but just because I found I cared little about any of the characters. I wonder if they brainstormed tourism Australia ideas, shook them up and tried writing them in to a script. Something just not quite right about it.

Stick to the book

I love Candice Fox's books, but I found it hard to recognize them here. Such a shame. Even though Jane is pretty good, it's frustrating to have to bring an American in to do what is a great Aussie character. I'm afraid Chamoun doesn't have the crazy energy and contradictory positivity of Amanda that was so intriguing in the books. Please stop trying to improve on an author's works, they are best sellers for a reason, don't change them. Scenery is great!

Only one episode in and really enjoyed it. The two leads are very good. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Off beat story, quirky characters and North Queensland scenery? Can't go wrong.

A great detective story in an exotic setting. Every episode left us wanting for more. Hope to see a season 2 someday. They certainly earned it with their performances.

Lots of ambition, lots of production skills but Australian drama often falls flat due to weak scripting. In this case, just inconsistent. It actually became quite addictive, but the last two episodes were quite laughable. Riddled with holes, implausible, a lot of effort let down by a weak script. The two leads put in big efforts but their characters were built on too many cliches or just silly assumptions. Thomas Jane did seem a bit B grade and Nicole Chamoun, although amazingly striking on screen, just didn't have the grit to pull off that character. What she needs now is a character she can actually inhabit because she has so much potential. OK, that's it, nice try but very flawed. P. S. Trying to pass off Gold Coast as FNQ just cant work unless you make it seem really hot and sweaty - so you need to spray all the actors to look sweaty.

Good little mystery series

As usual, there are a lot of 'reviewers' here who are not actually reviewing the show, just venting their politics. This is actually a well written, well acted show. The characters are believable and behave like actual human beings which is rare on television these days. Contrary to the nonsense posted in some reviews here, this is not a case of forced diversity. There is no one here I would not expect to find in the situation, with the possible exception of Thomas Jane as the fish-out-of-water Yank in a strange land. The casting of the geese was exceptional; I was completely convinced by their performances. ;-)

The plot is intriguing with enough twists and turns to keep you engaged up to the denouement. There are plenty of motives and several nasty folk lurking about. The resolution of the case under investigation is actually a bit of a surprise, though the final engagement between the cop and the two protagonists was predictable. I was sure from the first encounter with him that there was something wrong with the female lead's original conviction.

Too long to sustain the story

The problem with this series is it should have been half as long - which would have improved it immensely. Too much padding going nowhere that required hanging on to the fast forward button.

Solid Aussie Noir

As a fan of killer-croc horror films, the opening scene had me hooked, and the rest didn't disappoint. I'm not sure what show some of these reviewers watched - the acting was good all-round, the story was exciting and well-developed, and despite a lot of the elements not being entirely original, the setting and atmosphere helped set it apart from your typical mystery/thriller show.

Thomas Jane was good as always, though maybe a bit similar to his character in The Expanse. I hadn't seen the lead actress in anything before, but she was more sympathetic than I was expecting her to be, and her being "clichéd" as a tough ex-con is kind of the point - the character herself is playing a role.

I would have given this an 8/10, but it's way better than a lot of the reviews make out, and deserves more than the current average score. Maybe an international audience will be more appreciative.

decent Australian showciltural

Its a bit cheese and melo drama. Main female leads is quirqy and strange. Her work partner drink hard liquor and look shaggy.

Thomas Jane character get more charismatic as the series develop. I Really like what he brings as an actor, watch The Mist (black n white director cut), Location with crocodiles was good, but a bit under use. Australia have lots of reptiles!

Probably an S2?

Recommended.

Thomas Jane delights in this aussie drama

Honestly I'm not into crime dramas so I don't see the feedback on it being "on format" for the genre.. all i know is the characters were delightfully rich and deep from Thomas Jane to the chick who stars opposite him and beyond.. really consumable drama, a solid result abc.

Only thing that was a bit off was people wearing jackets in the outback? I thought it was like 30+degrees in winter.

Slow but acceptable PI drama

Too much backstory of the wrong kind and slow pacing hamper this new Australian PI drama but the end result is slightly better - and no worse - than anything else out there.

The inverted partnership of young offender/old lawman doesn't feel right for several episodes. I would have liked to know how someone who's been in prison for half their life knows so much about such a variety of things. I would have liked the old whipped dog cop to have some snappier wisdom.

The subplots within subplots slowed things down as did the hefty amount of backstory. I didn't need to see the old cop get arrested. I believed he was. I would have liked to know why the brass turned on him, though. There was some convenient developments but aren't there always these days?

The e-bike thing is weird. Continuity slipped a few times with the speed of her arrivals by pedal power vs. SUVs.

Overall, I did enjoy the series in spite of its flaws and look forward to the pursuit of the loose ends in season 2.

Did any of the producers even visit FNQ?

I was super excited about this series because it's story is based in gorgeous Far North Queensland where I live. Even when I saw it had actually been made on the goldy 19hrs south of us (different climate, environment, cultures, people, ways of life) I still held hope that they'd do it and us as people justice. What I got was an opening scene where a boat croc tour (I'm guessing meant to be the Daintree river) was feeding a salty. Well... that's highly illegal in Queensland so... Then there were the characters. Unnecessarily obnoxious, rude and unfriendly - sort of how I see people who live on the Goldy. People up here are friendly, honest and transparent for the most part. Especially to other locals so tue depiction of the vet receptionist was confusing and unlike anyone I'd come across up here. Then there was the confusing scenes of tropical storms which we'd assume was the wet season but the characters are wearing wool suits, long pants in the day (you'd be asking for heat stroke!) The main character had a huge city chic vibe, someone you'd think you'd spot trying to look alternative in a Melbourne cafe. The characters weren't likeable or endearing for the most part but I think you could end up enjoying the main male lead. Apart from that it was a pretty basic script. I wonder if the book is any good?

Aussie Entertainer

This series was great, i so enjoyed it and Thomas Jane was a revelation. To be honest i thought he was going to phone his lines in like Bruce Willis etc, yet he was brilliant and so was the young lady who played his side kick. Nicole Chamoun i believe is her name and she was quirky, different and had a certain Je ne sais quoi. I would love a second series although in this small town it would be difficult, but i suppose they could branch out. Any way watch this series you WILL NOT be disappointed. Like the World Cup i am now on a downer because it has ended, please give us more cheers.

A decent mystery well presented

Thomas Jane and Nicole Chamoun do an excellent at carrying this storyline. A decent supporting cast coupled with a griity but picturesque setting makes for a very entertaining production.
