There are several references throughout the film to Bigas Luna's cult classic Jamón, Jamón (1992), a film Pilar Palomero admittedly admires very much. Especially noticeable is Carla's mother being named "Penélope" after Penélope Cruz, who starred on that film playing a very young woman facing maternity issues. The production team went as far as to track down the original location of the bar that was run by Anna Galiena's character and turn it into the roadside restaurant owned by Penélope.
