poor attempt to depict Christians
jcastronovo25 September 2015
It is pathetic to see a movie (if you can call it that) have as it's sole purpose to ridicule and denigrate and misrepresent Christians. It is based on stereotypes. don't waste your time watching this garbage. check out Chris Mullins movie "Ragamuffin" instead. Why does Hollywood see the need to malign Christians time after time? What ever happened to the days when Hollywood would make movies that did not depict Christians in a negative light? Islam would never suffer from this type of stereotyping. Was this movie funny? not in the least.Who actually paid to have this made? There are scenes in the movie that depict Christians attending a concert and have their arms up as if they are just plain zombies.Go to a real Christian concert and you will see why people raise their arms .It is to praise God. Shame on the producers and actors who made this junk.

Hilarious, not hurtful

Man, I didn't think this movie was just ragging on Christians, at all. I grew up as a Christian and am still serious about my faith, and I loved this movie. It was hilarious! The humor didn't feel vitriolic or spiteful to me, at all. It reminded me of the way Napoleon Dynamite lampooned Junior High dorkdom - I don't think N.D.'s point was to trash middle schoolers; whenever I've heard people laugh about it, it's them seeing parts of themselves or their friends in it. Same with this movie - it reminded me of certain foibles of Evangelical Christianity, but I laughed affectionately, not mockingly. Maybe I'm off, perhaps the filmmakers really do despise Christians, but I'd really be surprised if that were the case. Just watch, laugh, and enjoy.

Also, having lived in Nashville for a while… Yeah, they nailed it.

The same affection that Christopher Guest shows his characters

I'm proud to say I'm a Christian and this movie didn't offend me at all. Pastor Jerry was great -- if a little misguided in how to reach his son. So was his wife. Ty was uncomfortable with the whole direction of the band - and in the end he's a great guy who wants to make the world better. Zack was the only "negative" character and you know one of those over-the-top zealots from a mile away! I laughed so hard at this film and I'm glad there's finally something set in Christian culture that gets the idiosyncrasies of the faithful without taking a dig at the actual theology we believe in. This is a highly recommended watch!
