Plot

When Lex Luthor appears by Nyxly's side, Supergirl and team must deal with the emotional fallout of facing their two biggest foes at the same time. Alex makes plans for the perfect proposal to Kelly, but work keeps getting in the way.

While the Super Friends try to get the Love Totem and use the power of the other Totems to capture Nxyly, Lex reveals his motive to the imp for helping her. Andrea gives William an ultimatum, and Alex tries to make the perfect wedding proposal to Kelly.—Gislef

Lex tells Nxyly that he's the key to her success, and puts the power glove on her. He says that he will help her get the Allstone, and as she prepares to kill Lex, Lex says that her future consciousness used the Dream Totem to manifest him there. Nxyly lowers her gun, and Lex says that they're partners and good friends in the future, and together they're two of the most powerful beings in the universe. He explains that Nxyly did get the Allstone, but she made a fatal mistake. However, Lex was there preserved her consciousness, and came back in time to make sure Nxyly survived.

Mitch comes in and wonders why Lex is there, and Nxyly figures she knows who he is and has had to deal with arrogant men her entire life. Nxyly says that they will never be friends, and Lex teleport away.

At the Tower, Supergirl tells the others that she's quit CatCo, and wants to draw Nxyly out and catch her off-guard. J'onn agrees and asks how they do it, and Brainiac-5, says that they have a plan. He takes Nia, Lena, and Kelly to the lab, while Supergirl asks J'onn for his help on disarming strategies.

Alex comes in and asks where Kelly is, and says that she has an engagement ring for Kelly. The next day is Alex and Kelly's anniversary, and Alex describes to Supergirl and J'onn how she's going to propose to Kelly at Al's Bar where they first fell in love. Alex promises that she'll be there to help take down Nxyly, and Supergirl and J'onn tell her to make her proposal preparations.

The next day Alex takes Esme to Al's. Al greets them and Alex explains that she's planning a proposal. The owner says the place is booked for a private event, and Esme asks if Al believes in love. Al tells them that he can't do it.

Lex goes to Luthor Manor, and Otis meets him there and says that he's missed Lex. Lex is unhappy that Nxyly rejected him, and Otis tells Lex that Lex's mother gave him a board seat. Otis insists that Lex doesn't need Nxyly, Much to Otis' surprise, Lex says that Nxyly is the love of his life and when he met her, he knew she was the one. He planned to come to the past, get the Love Totem, and make the Nxyly in the future love him. Lex figures that if Nxyly doesn't like him now, she can't love him in the future. Otis figures that Lex should do the same thing he did to make the future Nxyly love him, and Lex agrees him.

Supergirl and the team tell William their plan, and he takes notes. Lena will use her magic to create a fake Love Totem. Nxyly will come for the Totem as the location they've chosen, and they'll trap Nxyly there.

Alex takes Kelly to Lovers' Lane, and they both profess their love for each other. Nxyly teleports in and finds the fake totem in the hollow of a tree, and takes it. The Super Friends arrive, and Lena traps Nxyly in a magical circle she prepared to negate the Totem's powers. The circle can't suppress Nxyly's powers, and she and the Friends match powers. Supergirl manages to knock one power glove off of Nxyly, and J'onn manages to psychically stun her. As they prepare to put Nxyly in containment, Lex arrives and blasts them with his own power glove, using Kryptonite against Supergirl. Lena stares at Lex, and the fake Totem bursts into flame. Nxyly realizes that it was a fake, and Lex teleports himself and Nxyly away.

Lex teleports back to the manor, and Nxyly is furious that Lena was able to make the fake totem. Lex offers to help Nxyly so she isn't fooled again, and the imp says that just because he showed up to save her doesn't mean she's in his debt. Nxyly wonders how Lex knew where she was and sees a surveillance drone hovering above her. Lex insists that he was protecting Nxyly. Nxyly doesn't believe him and teleports away.

At the Tower, Lena uses the medbay equipment to help Supergirl recover. Lena admits that when Lex showed up, all of her rage swept over her and her rage affected her magic. She figures that it's safer if she doesn't do magic, and Supergirl says that they can still use her scientific help.

At CatCo, William tells Andrea what happened. She tells William that it's all on him, and she wants a full expose on Lex and Nxyly's plan. William reminds Andrea that Lex used Andrea misconceptions against her the last time and made them look like fools, and they have to take it slow. Andrea wants the story to put CatCo back on top, and William says that he needs to be sure it was Lex and not someone using an image inducer. He tells Andrea that he plans to get into Lex's inner sanctum, somehow, and Andrea gives him until the end of the day. Then she'll run the story about Lex's return, with or without William's proof.

At the Tower, Brainiac-5 reports that there's no sign of Nxyly or Lex's energy signatures. Supergirl and Lena return, and Brainiac-5 figures that the power glove came from the 31st century, and that is where Lex has been hiding. Brainiac-5 suggests that they use the Totems they have, but both Alex and J'onn warn that the Totems' consequences are too unpredictable. J'onn suggests that they can use the Totems' energy, but not as a weapon, and Brainiac-5 says that he'll work on it while Alex and Kelly patrol the city for Nxyly and Lex.

Lena, Brainiac-5, and Nia work in the lab to use the Totems' energy as a shield. Brainiac-5 worries that Lex is using other technology from the 31st century, and wishes they knew what Lex had done in the future. The Coluan admits to the others that he hasn't contacted the Legion yet. The last time he acted on information from the future, Brainiac-5 teamed up with Lex, betrayed his friends, and nearly destroyed half the world. He doesn't want to go down that path again, and Nia and Lena agrees.

Supergirl and J'onn consider the contained Totems, and figure they have to use the Courage Totem. J'onn says that he'll run the Totem's gauntlet, as there's one moment in his life that he figures it's time that he face. The Martian holds the Courage Totem, while Supergirl stands behind him. When J'onn activates the gantlets, he sees the White Martians taking him and his family. In the gauntlet, J'onn fights back but is still taken from his children The Oracle says that J'onn has performed admirably.

Back at the manor, Lex tells Otis that he's hurt that the present Nxyly doesn't care for him the way that the future Nxyly does. Otis says that it's sweet seeing Lex smitten, and Lex takes offense. Lex refuses to brainwash Nxyly into loving him because it will create a toxic relationship, and he says that he's a changed man and has grown because of his love. Otis suggests Lex tells Nxyly the truth, but Lex figures it will scare her off. He knows that in one hour, the Super Friends will get the real Love Totem. He figures that this time he'll let Nxyly come to him. However, he won't let Nxyly fails. Lex has Mitch tied and gagged, and tells him to deliver some intel to Nxyly for him without telling her where he got it from.

Mitch goes to the ship and gives Nxyly a book that he claims he found. He suggests that the book indicates the Love Totem is at the grave of famous lovers, in Portugal. Her crystal ball confirms the Totem is there.

Nia uses her dream powers and learns where the Totem is. The Friends go to Lisbon, Portugal, and finds the grave. Nxyly teleports in and Supergirl uses the Courage Totem to power a shield to protect her, Sentinel, and J'onn from Nxyly's blasts. Nxyly manages to break through the shield, sending the three heroes flying, The heroes have visions caused by the Dream Totem, and Supergirl hallucinates her changing into a Zone phantom. Nxyly watches the Love Totem disappear, then has Mitch teleport her away.

The other Friends come in and the heroes compare notes. Brainiac-5 confirms that there's no sign of the Love Totem, and Alex wonders how it disappeared. While Brainiac-5 deduces that the Totem seeks out love and repels hate, Supergirl still has flashes of the dream Phantom phantoms. Brainiac-5 figures that the combined power of two Totems overwhelmed his shield.

Nxyly teleports to Luthor manor, tells Lex that the Totem disappeared, and asks if he knows where it is. She reluctantly asks him for help but insists that they'll never be friends and it's strictly business.

Back at the Tower, J'onn tells Supergirl that the gauntlet took him back to the time that he failed to protect his daughters. This time he fought to the death, but still lost them. J'onn saw Supergirl get hit by the Dream Totem, and felt the same way. Supergirl sympathizes, He realizes it's the first time Supergirl has faced Lex since he sent her to the Zone, and Supergirl says that it's hard to find hope. J'onn suggests that his test and her vision are trying to teach them to be stronger than their fears. He can't save his family, but he can save Supergirl and the others, that are his family now.

Supergirl suggests that they use the Totems as weapons. J'onn agrees, but warns Supergirl that if she uses the Humanity Totem, she could lose her own humanity. She's willing to take the risk, and figures a way to protect herself. Supergirl goes to Lena and asks her to use her magic to protect her from the Totem. Lena warns that her magic can't be trusted with Lex involved, and Supergirl describes her vision of becoming a phantom. She figures the nightmare showed her what she would be like if she lost her humanity, but she's not afraid to become a phantom. She figures the team will pull her back from the brink, which is why she needs Lena's help.

Lena worries that if she uses her magic, she could end up hurting Supergirl. Supergirl says that Lex tried to turn Lena into a monster, but now Lena has a new family and if she focuses on her real family, she can that to keep control.

William meets Alex and wonders why she's not at Al's. Alex explains about the booking, and how she doesn't feel that she should be taking time off when Nxyly and Lex are at large. However, she finally admits that her last proposal didn't go well, and it felt right but that relationship ended. William tells Alex that when Lex is around, tomorrow is never promises so Alex should give her love when she can.

Lex uses the 31st century technology to shield the ball, and tells Nxyly that he and the future Nxyly worked together. Nxyly wonders if she succeeds, and Lex tells her that he didn't know her then but her getting her revenge meant that the future-Nxyly "glowed" when she talked about it. Lex suggests that future-Nxyly getting her revenge might be why she befriended Lex, because she no longer carried the weight of her unfulfilled vengeance. The crystal ball activates, and Nxyly says that she knows where the Love Totem is.

Alex goes to Al's to persuade him to let her use the place, and finds Kelly and Esme there waiting in surprise. They're the ones who booked Al's and Esme says that Kelly and Alex had the same plan and it must be fight. Kelly tells Alex that she wanted to surprise her, and loves everything about her. Alex helps Kelly be the truest version of herself, and is Kelly's perfect match. When Alex takes out her ring, she realizes that it's the Love Totem as Nxyly and Lex teleport in.

Lex blasts Alex, and Kelly shields her. Esme yells for Supergirl, who arrives with J'onn. Supergirl has Alex take Esme out, while Lex blasts J'onn back and Kelly protects Supergirl with her shield while Lena at the Tower casts the spell. Brainiac-5 is monitoring her, and when Supergirl checks in, he says that Lena is keeping her emotions in check.

Supergirl uses her super-breath to knock Nxyly back and then freeze her. Lena casts the spell as Nxyly breaks free of the ice. Supergirl blasts her with the weaponized Humanity Totem, imbuing Nxyly with humanity. Lex continues blasting J'onn, who rises against the energy.

Nxyly overcomes the effects of the Totem, refusing to let Supergirl sway her from her mission. Supergirl calls for J'onn help, and J'onn knocks Lex back by repelling the power blast, and then uses his blaster on Nxyly as well. Brainiac-5 arrives with the containment device he's made, while Lex grabs the Love Totem. He teleports to Nxyly and then teleports both of them away, dropping the Love Totem in the process as J'onn blasts it with the power of the Courage Totem.

In the aftermath, J'onn wonders if he damaged the Love Totem. It's turned black, and Kelly wonders if all the love in the world is diminished. Alex says that the Totem appeared in his pocket because of the love he feels for all of them, and can still feel the truest love. She motions Kelly over to her, and says that she had convinced herself that if they didn't have the perfect proposal, their relationship would be ruined. Alex says that nothing can tear them apart, and says that she loves Kelly. She drops to one knee and proposes to Kelly, who accepts. Esme smiles and hugs them, and the others applaud as Brainiac-5 takes pictures.

On the ship, Lex uses his technology to remove the Totem's influence from Nxyly. Nxyly wonders why he abandoned the Love Totem to save her, and Lex initially denies it. When Nxyly asks him what he wants from her, Lex says that he loves her and when she died in the future, part of him died as well. Lex admits that he hates everyone, but then he met Nxyly and found someone who could match his genius and ambition. He admits that he sound insane, and Nxyly says that no one else has ever selflessly sacrifices themselves for her. The imp says that if Lex is there to help him, then they can be friends.

At the Tower, the Friends celebrate the engagement. Nia notices Brainiac-5 looking pensive, goes over to him, and asks what's wrong. Brainiac-5 says that Lex's behavior was irrational, and something changed him in the future. When Brainiac-5 says that he doesn't want to make the mistakes of the past, Nia tells Brainiac-5 that now he has the team and he has to call the future.

Lena arrives and Kara thanks her for taking the risk, and protected her from losing a part of herself. Kara's friend thanks her for pushing her to use her magic, and now Lena knows that she's free of Lex.

Andrea calls William, but William ignores the call and meets with Otis in a shadowy alley.

Andrea leaves a voicemail for William saying that she'll get what she needs herself. She turns into Acarta and breaks into Lex's manor, and finds his notebook.

Nxyly points out that they can't rebuild the Allstone without the Hope Totem that Supergirl destroyed. Lex has the Totem, and explains that when the Totem's shell is destroyed, the essence flows into something new. He says that the Friends destroyed the Love Totem, but he and Nxyly figure it will reconstitute as well.

At their apartment, Alex, Kelly, and Esme go through a book for prospective brides. A tattoo of a rose is on the back of Esme's neck.
