- Mpho and Masego are enjoying a romantic picnic...seeming to be a young couple very much in love.
Mpho is alone, pacing, on a traditional African compound. When his Uncle Kago arrives, Mpho discloses he is worried about his upcoming marriage to Masego. While Uncle Kago believes his nephew is getting cold feet, that is not the case. Mpho has just learned that Masego has HIV. Unsure of what to do, he turns to his Uncle for advice. Mpho immediately regrets this decision, believing there is no way his uncle can understand his situation. After a heated discussion, Mpho is startled to learn that Uncle Kago has been living a normal life for 20 years with his own HIV diagnosis.
At a clinic, Masego is waiting to be seen by an HIV Counselor when she runs into a friend (Tsala) who congratulates her on the upcoming wedding. Masego is visibly uncomfortable and lies to Tsala, telling her she is at the clinic getting medication for her mother. Boitumelo, the HIV Counselor, brings Masego into a consulting room and explains that if she is adherent to her HIV treatment, her viral load should become undetectable and then she cannot transmit the virus. Mpho shows up to get tested, something that terrifies him. Though he tries to be supportive, he ultimately runs out of the clinic after getting tested and avoids his test result - which come out as HIV negative.
While Uncle Kago is out looking for Mpho, Masego seeks support from, Aunty Lorato (Uncle Kago's wife). Masego is surprised to learn that Uncle Kago was diagnosed with HIV 20 years ago, and that Aunty Lorato does not have the virus. That evening, Uncle Kago brings Mpho home after a bout of drinking. While he sleeps off the alcohol, Masego is busy on her laptop reading and learning about life with HIV. The next morning, Masego and Mpho discuss her diagnosis. Masego courageously tells Mpho that she is still the same person she was before being diagnosed with HIV.
Two years later, Uncle Kago's wife (Aunty Lorato) has died of cancer. He and Mpho talk openly about HIV. Mpho has become an HIV activist and has a baby with Masego - they are living the life of their dreams.
This is the second film in the "Test Your Love" series, which was created as a platform to help shift social norms in accelerating progress towards ending HIV in Botswana. Key public health messaging related to ending the HIV epidemic is presented in an engaging and relevant manner.
