When you hear of an indie Australian film, you'd be an outlier if you didn't automatically associate it with poor acting, poor budget (or big budget used poorly) and a gimmick.
This film, however, is the exception.
It is a brutally honest insight into the Australian attitude and personality, where obscene words are in a way, poetic. The carefully constructed profane sentences and one liners clearly tell the story of how the characters are feeling and what they are thinking.
It's a slow burn with a few twists and turns to keep you enticed and on edge. The environments accurately represent what it is to be in Australian country, right down the backyard garage mechanic. While the country and backyards of Australia carry an overly orange and brown colour scheme, this does not overrule the screen. The lighting and collaboration of complementary colours create a vibrant picture on the screen.
The sound effects are beyond what you'd expect with such a low budget. The intentional echo of a downtrodden hotel room, right down to the clicks of a rotating fan. In addition, the soundtrack of the carefully curated music gives the feeling of familiarity as it is in tune with old rock bands.
All in all, it's a film worthy of your time. It is truly a masterpiece, a true Aussie film. I hope that there is more where this came from.
