- In San Francisco, three weeks before Christmas, Joseph Van Aston says goodbye to Jasmine, who is in the bed in his luxury hotel room. Joseph goes to work on his motorcycle. His mother Amy demands that he see to it that their company can buy land in a rural area that is needed for the company's operations. She knows he can get women to do what he wants. If he does not succeed, he will be demoted from full partner and lose that hotel room.
Leo drives Joseph to his destination in a limo. Joseph calls Gemma to say they need to break up. The road is bumpy so Joseph spills something on his shirt and has to change. Fortunately, Leo was delivering clothes to a charity so there is a silly shirt Joseph can wear. Joseph asks Leo to let him walk the rest of the way, saying he will contact Leo when it is time to pick him up.
At the dairy farm Joseph's company is supposed to buy, a ranch hand is expected the next day. Young Hannah sees he is early and asks him for help as a cow gives birth. Joseph doesn't try to explain who he is, but with Hannah's older sister Callie on the other end, Joseph pulls out the newborn calf. Callie is glad to see the ranch hand is early and starts telling him what to do, and Joseph tries to explain who he is but can't get the words out. Callie sees this man who looks more like he belongs on a soap opera instead of a ranch and immediately assumes he is there to make as much money as possible while doing as little work as he can. Callie shows "Manny" the camper where he will live, and warns him not to mess up.
Joseph believes Callie will be hard to persuade so he calls Leo to say it will take several days, so he needs to find a place to stay. Also, he asks Leo to find a ranch hand named Manny and tell him the job is filled and he won't be needed.
Callie's mother Wendy, whose head is covered as if she doesn't have any hair, tells Callie she hired Manny from a web site, though Callie has her doubts about him. Connor comes to the house and asks Callie for a date, but Callie isn't interested. Connor also agrees something isn't right about "Manny".
Joseph claimed his truck needed to be fixed, so he buys a truck and goes to the nice house where Leo is staying. Manny is there and he wants money before he will help Joseph with his ruse. So Manny, who is normally a hard worker, likes that he will get paid for doing essentially nothing. Manny will stay with Leo until Joseph completes his objective.
Work starts early, and Callie has a long list of activities for Joseph to do. Joseph calls Manny and asks him to explain the disgusting jobs. Joseph works hard and thinks he is succeeding but at the end of the day, Callie sees something wrong and says, "Strike one." The animals have not been fed. But Joseph says that wasn't on the list. Callie says that should have been obvious. And there is no feed because what they have is expired. Joseph says he will go pick some up.
Callie has a second job as a bartender because the farm is deep in debt and making very little money. Callie's mom's medical bills are a big reason. Callie is shown giving her mom pills several times, and her mom is on oxygen. Wendy's hair is growing back, but it is later revealed her doctor has given up on further chemotherapy.
Once he gets off work, Joseph goes to the bar where Callie works and Liz sings. Joseph finds Manny and Leo there. He also manages to get on Callie's good side before Connot shows up. Connor knows Manny, who has to introduce Joseph as Manny, making it sound like a coincidence. Connor hits on Callie and Joseph feels the need to step in and be a knight in shining armor. The two get in a fight.
The next day Callie assures Joseph that Connor is harmless. She and Joseph are getting along better. Meanwhile, Manny is getting more demanding as he is expected to do so much for Joseph. Leo wonders when Joseph will tell Callie the truth. Manny also reveals he has the ability to evaluate wine.
Connor gets suspicious and decides to investigate Leo and Manny. But there are no obvious signs anything is wrong. Hannah also looks into Manny and sees a photo on that web site that looks nothing like Joseph. This may explain why Callie's mother doesn't say anything when she finally sees Joseph.
Knowing her mom doesn't have much time left, Callie takes a day off from farm work and goes on a picnic with her mom and Hannah.
Eventually, Callie and Joseph are getting along really well, and they even kiss for the first of several times. Callie shows Joseph her father's workshop and says it has been three years since he died. Joseph says he also lost his father. Callie uncovers a motorcycle, which excites Joseph, who later fixes it and starts riding it.
The family has a nice meal together, with Joseph eating inside with them.
Various scenes are shown with no audio other than music. Callie is shown cooking with her mom and working with Joseph.
Callie takes Joseph to see a vineyard on the property. She says the wine isn't sold, but is given to family and friends. Her father wanted to make the vineyard into a business. but after his death the plan was dropped. Callie says her fiance died with her father in the same crash. Joseph later learns the grapes were a type brought over from Bordeaux by immigrants who were able to save the last of the grapes before a parasite put an end to the industry in France. It was these grapes that led to California's success as a wine producer.
Time has passed and Joseph thinks he needs to tell Callie the truth. However, he knows he can't take away her farm because it means so much to her. He takes out the papers Callie needs to sign and while he intends to present them to her, he eventually tears them up. When contacted by his mother, Joseph makes it clear Callie won't sell and shouldn't sell.
On another visit to the bar, Joseph encounters Connor again but they get along better. However, Connot sees Leo and Manny and listens to their conversation. He hears enough to go online and discover Amy Van Aston and her connection to Callie's farm.
The first thing in the morning, Callie is awakened by a text from Connor. He sends Joseph's photo and information.
And that's not all. Amy is on her way. Leo and Manny are having a spa day when they get the news. Leo has to tell Joseph, who is not answering his phone. When Leo and Manny show up, it is too late. Callie is already livid and orders Joseph off the property. Amy asks to meet with Callie, who is determined not to sell. In the house, Amy tells Callie she knows how much debt the farm has and selling to her is the only way out. Callie's mom assures Amy that her life insurance will pay. Amy says no, it won't. Because her husband borrowed against it.
Callie still refuses to sell, but Joseph soon has an idea. Leo and Manny are packing up and Joseph gives Manny a gift for all he has done. Leo has quite a wine collection. He has a bottle of the wine Callie has produced, and Joseph takes it to an expert.
Joseph contacts his mother to say he won't allow the farm to be sold, and that he knows what he wants in life. Amy assures him he still has his job and she accepts his decision.
Joseph tries to come back to the farm and is confronted again by Connor. Joseph eventually persuades Connor to let him through. Callie catches Joseph in the vineyard and pulls a shotgun, but Joseph is finally able to explain his plan. The vineyard needs to look good for the expert who is coming. The expert looks over the wine barrels and the vineyard, and he makes an offer to Callie that will keep the farm going.
There is a nice Christmas celebration as an old barn has been fixed up. Joseph makes his feeling about Callie clear.
As the audience hears Liz sing "O Holy Night" as part of the Christmas celebration, there is video of a bench with the names of Callie's deceased parents. Callie and Joseph sit on the bench and kiss. A very large vineyard is shown.
