Taniwha are beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the sea, especially in places with dangerous currents or deceptive breakers. The symbol of the Taniwha is an important figure with not only the Maori people but the whole of New Zealand. It is most commonly used in stories in both children's and adults books in New Zealand.
