Not what I expected!
amandaobrien-6427313 August 2021
I came across this online and thought I'd give it a go. While it starts out as what you'd expect from a typical crime movie it ends up been more. The characters are not straight forward and all have secrets that slowly come out during the film. The final twist, of which they're are many really adds another layer to this little Irish film- which isn't the usual dreary stuff we expect from Irish cinema- but rather a different type which is great. The film is a bit rough around the edges but the story delivers and entertains. The Gangster Brian has some brilliant scenes. All in all well worth watching.

Intriguing
BandSAboutMovies19 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Joe has had his car stolen by CD and Adele, a couple on the run with some ill-gotten cash who have even worse criminals after them. Can he connect with these strangers and save all of them? Or are some people well beyond being redeemable?

With a title that comes from late 1800s Victorian slang that means "don't lie to me," as dog sellers would often pass off mutts as high pedigree show breeds, this movie also proves another truism a little closer to our time. As Notorious B. I. G. Said in the late 1990s, "the more money we come across, the more problems we see."

Shot in eight days between COVID-19 lockdowns in Ireland with director Pauric Brennan, the cast and writer Mark Hampton as the only crew, this movie looks way better than the challenges that it faced as it got made. Hampton was also somehow able to write this tight crime yarn with just four characters in only two months.

This is probably the best ninety minutes you'll spend trapped in a car with a group of drug addicts this year. Or maybe not, I don't know how you lead your life.

Twist makes half decent film, a very decent film indeed!!
Offalygoodfilmcritic23 August 2021
Watched, no knowing very much about the film, and not expecting too much from a very low budget, Irish film.

Was pleasantly surprised however.

The script was tight, and hit all the right beats. The actors, all to a tee, were very good - especially the BRIAN character.

And the twist? Well I certainly didn't see it coming!!

Room for a sequel me thinks.... ???

Wow!! Good little film, great twist

Love to watch and support Irish films, especially low budget first features like this.

Whilst the majority are good solid little productions, most have very little about them.

This film however, has a great cast, a great script and an amazing twist at the end of the film that makes you just say - "Wow", and then clicking back to the beginning, to make sure this twist all adds up and wasnt just thrown in last minute for 'shock value'.

As an aside - Yes, the twist does work, and yes it is built up throughout the film, without making it obvious what was coming.

With such a small budget, and such a tight film frame (was filmed in days I think I read), this really does exceed what little expectations I had for it.

A must see - If only to see how low budget, local films should be made.

Well done all.

Found it on Plex

I watch a lot of indie movies and while most are bad you do find ones that are fairly good and enjoyable. With Dont Sell me a dog I found one of those gems. It was in the most popular selection and I flicked it on. It follows two junkies as they try to escape a drug dealer. As they escape the try to rob an old mans car but he's not having it. They end up on a road trip of sorts where the girl and the old guy bond. The film has a few good twists in it but it was a final reveal that made go back to see it they had it all answered and sure enough it was there but you'd miss it. All in all this little Irish film made for $6000 was 90minuts well spent.

Hidden Gem On Plex

Warning: Spoilers
Film stood out on the PLEX most popular, as was the only one not a Western.

Clicked on it, and delighted I did.... although in a way, there was a hint of the western theme about it... Thieves running from their past, on the open road with a hijacked car and a wily old tour guide to boot.... But a wily old tour guide with more to hide than everyone else in the film.

Raw Irish Talent
cuvierscaiman24 August 2021
What can I say? Directed by Pauric Brennan, and his first feature length I believe, this movie shows nothing but pure raw Irish talent both infront of and behind the camera. It's got your typical Irish crime antics/capers, and some pretty funny one liners thrown in for good measure.

No its not a Hollywood flick, but an Irish indie movie in a league of its own. If this is anything to go by, then Pauric and Co have ALOT to offer us viewers and we can only look forward to what they have in store for us.

Onwards and upwards guys. We'll done and great work from all.

You'll be happy you watched it.

Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes it is hard to watch a film shot in your hometown or from someone in your home town. This is not one of those occasions.

Independent film making is not easy or cheap but here is a film that makes use of the phrase "a lot with a little".

Don't Sell Me A Dog is a great Irish film with a great little twist that you won't expect.

Andy Yule in particular puts in a strong performance. As does the rest of the cast.

Hampton's writing is great and really brought to life by Brennan's ability to frame the shots in such a way that give maximum effect.

Didn't see THAT coming !
janette-7636725 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started to watch this, but for a low budget movie it certainly delivered ! The violence was quite shocking , very raw, and the ending blew me away- I really didn't see it coming . Loved Andy Yule's portrayal of Joe - not the poor old soul we were led to believe he was at all !
