He is the Kater
Horst_In_Translation26 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Mario Adorf was the great Bellheim, Bruno Ganz is the great Kater. And people keep repeating it a couple times in the film, so we won't forget. The translation means the great male cat and is a wordplay on Ganz' character's name in this 85 minute movie. In his most famous portrayal, he played the German Reichsfuehrer Adolf Hitler and here, in this movie from 5 years ago, he plays the Swiss prime minister. The cast has quite a few known names if you know a bit about German cinema: Ulrich Tukur, Antoine Monot, Edgar Selge, Justus von Dohnányi, Christiane Paul and Marie Bäumer. The latter two, I am usually not too big on. They have good characters because of their looks, more than great acting talent in my opinion, especially Bäumer.

The movie is based on a novel and the writers who adapted it already collaborated on "Das Wilde Leben", the Uschi Obermaier biopic. "Der grosse Kater" deals with several issues. Political intrigues are in the center, but it's also about being a good father and husband, about a royal visit, about professional relationships and about cancer. There was one disturbing scene when, in one of Kater's flashbacks to his youth, a man kills a kitten. This somehow predicts Kater's fate, at least his professional future. All in all, I recommend this movie, but I am not too neutral as Ganz is among my favorite actors. If this is not the case for you and you don't care about films on politics, you may give this one a pass.

Fine Film about the Life and Love of a statesman.
Dr_Mark_ODoherty24 February 2024
This is an absorbing tale of love and political power.

The film grants a personal and unique insight to the life of a statesman, portraying the Swiss Federal President's last two days in office. While preparing for a royal state reception in honor of the Spanish King, an intrigue is planned behind his back with the intentions of causing his downfall. Private interests and the struggle for political power clash with turbulent consequences, in a dangerous cocktail of political and psychological forces.

Being currently the Leader of the Global Community, I can relate to this film very well :)

On that note, as Leader of the Global Community, I assure all Global Citizens that we will manifest World Peace; by manifesting Human Rights, International Law and Equality in the Global Community.

We also want to emphasize, that Universal Suffrage for all Israelis and Palestinians in one democratic nation, is the only viable option to manifest Peace, Security, Legal Equality and International Law in the Middle East; at least for now. The nation of Israel-Palestine will also entail a constitutional clause, that will allow it's citizens to refer to the country as either Israel or Palestine - or both, namely Israel-Palestine.

NB: The corrupt Putin regime is responsible for the killings of Human Rights Activists and critics of the oppressive regime; such as Alexei Navalny. We declare Mr Putin and all collaborateurs of the Putin regime 'Persona non grata' - and order their arrest by the IPA and Global Community, so that International Law and the UDHR can be restored in the Global Community.
