- The Key
At the Braddock Hills pawn shop in Pittsburgh, a customer nervously gives two men a case and asks if they're good. The owner, Jake Izillo, opens the case and reveals a motel Key to Room 10 inside, and takes a folding door out of his case and sets it up on the counter. He attaches a door knob and reaches for Key.
The customer, Marco Cordova, draws a revolver on Jake and the second man, Ignacio Losa, draws and aims his own shotgun. Jake says that he has to check the Key, and Marco nods in agreement and lowers his revolver. When Jake inserts the Key and turns the knob, he opens the door and a ray of sunlight shines in his face. He closed the door, makes a call, and says that he has it.
Marco takes the Key back and demands the money first. Jake relays his statement, and motions to Marco. Getting the go ahead, Marco uses a laptop to confirm the money--two million dollars--has been transferred to his offshore account. Marco hands over the Key to Jake, and goes out the back. Howard "The Weasel" Montague and two of his men are waiting, grab Marco, and take him back into the pawn shop.
Weasel asks what he missed, and Jake grabs the gun from Ignacio and asks who the Weasel is. In response, Weasel takes a Pen out of his breast pocket. Marco tells him not to do it, and Weasel says that Marco made a mistake and sold Jake something that belongs to him, and now he's going to have to take it back. Jake tells Weasel to get out, and Weasel clicks the Pen repeatedly and advances on Jake, and tells him to take it easy. Marco yells at Jake to shoot Weasel, but before he can Weasel pokes Jake with the Pen and there's a flash of light that fills the store.
Later, the police arrive. Detective Joe Miller and his partner Lou Destefano check the crime scene. There's no sign of robbery, and there's a smell of burning meat in the air. Jake is blasted into to the wall, his skin charred, and Marco is hanging from the ceiling, similarly burned and embedded in the plaster up to his waist. Dr. Martin Ruber comes in to check the bodies, and Lou confirms that Jake is the manager and the owner, Karl Kreutzfeld, isn't present. Ruber confirms that Jake's clothes weren't burned, and Marco's neck was broken like he was shot out of a cannon. They have Ignacio's named as a possible witness, and Joe knows Ignacio as a sweet kid with a nightmare family. They go to pick him up.
Weasel's men are driving him across town. When one of them complains about the late hours, Weasel puts the Pen to his neck and points out the man lost the Key. He says that they've got to find Ignacio.
As Joe and Lou drive to Ignacio's house, Lou invites Joe and his daughter, Anna, to come up to his cannon with him and his wife Kathy. They discuss Joe's divorce, and he says that his ex-wife Vanessa might have a case. Lou assures him that he's not going to lose Anna, They spot Ignacio on the street and drive up to him, and he runs. The detective park and Joe chases after the running Ignacio, who opens a door with Key and goes inside, shutting the door behind him. A garage work opens the bathroom door and comes out. There's no sign of Ignacio. As the two detectives go back to their car, Weasel watches from his car parked across the street. He tells his men that he wants Joe's name.
At home, Joe and Anna are having dinner. As Anna cleans the dishes, Lou calls Joe and says that they picked up Ignacio at his mother's and calls in Joe. Joe goes to the station with Anna, and fellow detective Lee Bridgewater greets them. Joe has her watch Anna while he questions Ignacio in his office. Once they're alone, Joe asks Ignacio what happened. He says that he can't, and Joe points out that he lied about Ignacio killing his father in self-defense when his father was going to kill his wife. Ignacio says that if he tells Joe, his mother is dead. Joe says that he'll protect her, and Ignacio asks who is going to protect Joe.
Joe dumps out an envelope with Ignacio's belongings, and finds the Key. Ignacio says that the motel isn't a real place, Ignacio says that Wesel came in with two men, then grabs the motel Key, uses it on the office door, and runs out. Joe goes out into the hallway, but there's no sign of Ignacio.
Later, Joe goes over the surveillance footage. It shows Ignacio going out his office door, but it not opening on the other side. Lou comes in and says that Jake called Karl right before he got killed. The next day, the detectives go to Karl's house. He's having a birthday party for his sick son Isaac, and gives him a castle playhouse as a gift. Lou comes in and asks Karl where he made all of his money. Karl says that he owns a chain of dry-cleaning shops, and the pawn shop belonged to his grandfather.
Karl claims that Jake called him to ask if he could close up early. He doesn't know anything about Ignacio, and tells Isaac to make a wish while blowing out his birthday candles. Joe asks Karl about the Key, and Karl says that Jake didn't say anything about a Key. He tells the detectives to call him if he can help them.
Ignacio is walking through a parking lot, on a call to a woman named Jennifer saying he just wants to get rid of the Key. A SUV tries to run him over, and Ignacio dives out of the way. Two men in suits get out and shoot at Ignacio, who dodges and runs. As he lets himself into a nearby door using the Keys, he takes one shot and falls through, closing the door behind him. The two men drive away.
Joe and Anna are at home drying dishes, and a door in the next room opens. Going to investigate, the dying Ignacio falls through the door. He tells Joe that he's sorry, and Joe calls an ambulance. Ignacio says that they double-crossed him and gives Joe the Key, saying that it opens every door. He dies in Joe's arms.
Later, the police secure the house. Lou steps away to take a call from his wife, and they go inside and Anna sleeps next to Joe. Joe can't sleep, goes to a closet door, then uses the Key and finds that it opens onto a motel room. Joe enters the motel Room and looks out the window and sees a sunny landscape outside. Joe closes the Room door then opens it and finds himself looking out at a beach. He steps out and finds himself on the beach, a hut behind him. Joe lets himself in through the hut door and finds himself back in the Room, closes the door, and opens it again. This time a biker's bar is on the other side, and Joe closes the door, says "take me home", and opens the door to find the inside of his house on the other side. Anna is in the hallway and asks what's in the closet, and her father says that it's just a dream. Joe opens the door and there's nothing but a closet inside, and tells Anna to go back to bed.
At home, Ruber is going through files on other similarly-burned victims. One of them swallowed a motel Key, His wife Helen startles him, and asks if he's coming to bed, and he says that he will eventually.
The next morning, Anna has Joe make animal pancakes. Lou calls and asks about Anna, and Anna comes back and says that stuff keeps disappearing in the "magic room". Anna has taken the motel Key, opens the door, and tosses one of her stuffed animals in. She closes the door and when it opens, the toy is gone. Anna goes into the Room and tossed the bed sheets on the floor, then comes out and closes the door. She has Joe open it, and when he does, the bed is made up again. A spooked Joe closes the door and makes Anna promise not to tell anyone about the Room, the Key, or anything else.
Later, Lou goes to his kitchen and finds Joe waiting for him. Joe says that he knows how Ignacio did it, and takes Lou to the Room. He tries the phone on the wall but it doesn't ring, and Lou checks the bathroom and confirms that everything works. They open a door to Penn State stadium and watch the game, and Joe says that they can't keep the Key. However, they figure they can enjoy it while they can.
Back at the station, Joe and Lou tells them that Ignacio's half-sister Jennifer is there. Joe meets with Jennifer, who says that she left home and asks for any personal effects. Joe knows that Ignacio didn't have a sister and grabs Jennifer's wrist, and she figures Joe took the Key. She says that she's responsible for it, and he refuses to let her go until she tells him who she is. Jennifer offers to show him who she is, and takes out a Letter Opener.
A minute later, Lou wakes Joe up. Joe is unconscious at his desk, and Jennifer is gone. Meanwhile, Jennifer goes to her car, makes a call, and says that Joe has the Key. She then drives away.
Back at home, Joe preps Anna for her court interview with a doctor. He takes Anna there and she goes in, and the receptionist invites Joe to wait at a coffee shop across the street. Joe passes a room where patient Wally Jabrowksi is arguing with an orderly. He "condemns the orderly to Hell" touches him with a bus Ticket wrapped in duct tape at one end, and the orderly disappears. Wally sees Joe watching him and walks away, and Joe catches up to him and Wally touches Joe with the Ticket.
Joe falls out of the sky onto a highway. The orderly is walking nearby, and he wonders where he is. There's a deserted house nearby, and Joe uses the Key on the front door to go back to the hospital.
Wally is walking off down the hallway, runs into Joe, and teleports him back to the same highway using the Ticket. The orderly is still there, and Joe goes back to the hospital the same way. Wally teleports Joe away again and takes an elevator down, and finds Joe waiting for him. Joe punches Wally in the face and takes the Ticket, and shows Wally the Key. They go to the nearby coffee shop and Joe demands answers in return for giving him the Ticket back.
Explaining, Wally says that he was in the hospital for hemorrhoids Joe pays for the coffee, and Wally orders a full breakfast. He says that the Key is an Object, and they all come from the Room. Wally says that there are about a hundred objects, and some do useful stuff and some don't. One man went insane tapping a pencil that made a penny appear on each tap. Some Objects like the Key are useful, and the Ticket only teleports someone to a spot in Gallup, Texas. Wally only knows that something terrible happened in the Room, and nobody knows exactly what happened. He figures that there's always a price to pay for using the Objects, and Objects attract each other. Wally warns that bad people are looking for the Key, and they won't mind killing Joe or his family to get it. Joe figures that Anna is in danger, and gives Wally the Ticket back before going back to the hospital.
Joe goes back to the hospital and discovers that there's a different receptionist. The receptionist says that Ann has already left with her father. Joe's cell phone rings, and Weasel says that Joe has something of his and he has something of Joe's... and offers a trade.
Joe drives to an abandoned rail station where Weasel wants to make the trade, and calls Lou to meet him. Meanwhile, Weasel and his men pull into the building, park, and Weasel goes upstairs and tells his men to remove and burn all the doors.
Joe arrives a few minutes later and finds the doors in a pile, burning. He parks and gets out, draws his gun, and hears Weasel talking upstairs in the office. Joe goes up and finds Weasel and his men holding Anna. He tells Anna that it's going to be okay, and Weasel threatens to use the Pen on Anna. Joe puts his gun down and takes out the Key, and when Wesel's two men try to grab him, Joe fights them. Weasel uses the Pen, hits one of his men by mistake, and blasts him out the window. Joe grabs Weasel, shoves him away, and fights with the other thug. Anna grabs the Key and runs, finds one door that wasn't open, and shoves it closed. As she goes into the Room, Weasel grabs her and gets the Key.
Joe beats his man and arrives, just as Anna is pushed into the Room. The door closes and when Weasel reopens it, Anna is gone. The detective beats Weasel and says that he reset the Room and lost Anna. Weasel yells that there's an Object that can bring Anna back, and he can take Joe to her. The second thug recovers and runs up, shooting at Joe. Joe grabs the Key and dodges into the Room, closing the door behind him. Weasel opens the door, and the Room is gone.
Looking around the empty Room, Joe throws the Key against the wall in disgust, then sits on the bed, holding his head in frustration.
