Speciality distributor Cosmic Cat has set U.K. release dates for documentary “Cassius X: Becoming Ali.”
The film follows the early years of Cassius Clay, from a bright-eyed rookie boxer from Louisville, Kentucky, to world heavyweight champion and from working class intellectual to one of America’s most influential civil rights campaigners. The film reveals how the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, reinforced by a friendship with revolutionary preacher, Malcolm X, set Clay on the journey to become Cassius X, before his induction to the Nation of Islam and ascension to the name of Muhammad Ali.
“Cassius X: Becoming Ali” is directed by Muta’Ali Muhammad (“Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn”) and is based on the book “Cassius X: A Legend In The Making” by journalist Stuart Cosgrove. Exclusive: Killing Escobar producer Two Rivers Media is saying goodbye to one of its original staffers, factual chief Mick McAvoy, Deadline has learned.
McAvoy is leaving his role as Head of Factual after three and a half years with the Scotland-based indie producer and Two River confirmed his exit in a statement this afternoon. The exec added he is moving on to “another adventure soon and will be able to announce more in the next few days.”
“Mick is leaving Two Rivers after three and a half years as Head of Factual as he is keen to return to more hands-on documentary making,” said Two Rivers Founder and Managing Director Alan Clements.
“Mick has led our growth in factual with great success — from theatrical docs Killing Escobar and Cassius X: Becoming Ali to series like Frankie Boyle’s Tour of Scotland and This Is Our Story, following a season at Hearts football club.

The BBC and Screen Scotland have renewed a partnership that will see a further £3M ($4M) pumped into the Scottish TV industry over the next three years.
The Memorandum of Understanding will support the production of TV drama, entertainment, scripted comedy, documentary and factual formats on the BBC’s network television services from Scotland, while developing the skills and talent required to produce these shows.
The agreement identifies how Screen Scotland and the BBC will continue to work together strategically to hit the BBC’s commitment to invest 8% of its programming spend in the nation, having missed this target in last year’s pandemic-impacted 12 months.
The move is “further evidence of the BBC’s desire to invest and produce more programs across all parts of the UK,” according to Director General Tim Davie.
The previous two-year round of investment saw the creation of the likes of BBC2 drama Guilt (pictured) and feature documentary Killing Escobar,...

Abacus Media Rights has clinched rapid sales in more than half the world’s major territories on “Killing Escobar,” proving the enduring market appeal of one of Latin America’s most powerful IPs, Pablo Escobar – if producers find a new and unique way into his story.
In the case of “Killing Escobar,” this comes via the extraordinary true account of Scottish mercenary and ex-Sas operative Peter McAleese who was hired by the notorious Cali Cartel to recruit and lead a 12-man team of ex-special forces commandos to assassinate the world’s biggest drug baron, Pablo Escobar.
The hit is planned at the one place Escobar thinks he is safe: his Hacienda Nápoles luxury retreat near Medellín whose attractions included an African wildlife zoo and one of Al Capone’s automobiles.
Narrated by McAleese himself, and driven by cinema-standard reconstruction of the actual nerve-biting mission, “Killing Escobar” mixes a combat...
