Glad to have finally seen it but didn't satisfy me.
lawrencelawrence8617 December 2020
Not their best effort, lots of obviously scripted moments, yes I know its mostly all scripted. Entertaining but the long wait may have been its biggest problem.

Slight disappointment
vincebeets17 December 2020
Don't get me wrong, these guys are great and I still enjoy watching them, but this episode was just not it. I don't know what it is, the lack of driving, the focus on the (obviously fake) treasure hunt, or just the overall feel of it being dramatically scripted. Nevertheless you'll have fun watching it, I am wondering what others might think.

Something was off
kgkumar2217 December 2020
Not sure what it was, but there was something in this episode specially in the beginning that felt different(not good different). It felt less natural and more scripted somehow. It was just okay.

Feels too scripted, but still lots of entertainment
sebastiansajin17 December 2020
It is really a joy to see these 3 old blocks on screen together and if you agree to that you will love this special.it feels too scripted, but the cars, the stupidly complicated roads, incredible scenery and some genuine comedy and emotions make this their best since the Columbia special

Badly edited, where are the beauties of Madagascar??
mihaelorehovec17 December 2020
The main reason that this was not the best special is - Clarkson wasn't leading this one, Hammond and May were. This special is missing night (hotel) scenes, Clarkson moments (knowledge of the place that they are in, his brilliant ideas etc.)

Also, the whole thing is badly edited, felt like they cutted good scenes out or in the middle of a good scene, all of the sudden next scene starts when the first one didn't finished.

Plus, the waiting killed the vibe.

They just don't disappoint
killerbee11315717 December 2020
It may feel a bit scripted, but you just can't get enough of them... their formula of presentation and their sense of humor on making a car show. Things seemed harsh with the way they have shot this and for that effort I just can't deny that I did genuinely enjoy it. Love them and can't wait for the next.

A swashbuckling but slightly soulless return to form
TheBabayaga17 December 2020
After what feels like an eternity, Clarkson, Hammond and May finally return for a swashbuckling adventure set in Madagascar. After the disappointment of last year's Seamen, this special felt like a proper adventure and mostly proves to be a return to form for our trio.

However, I can't help but notice that Clarkson & Co are really starting to show their age now. Sadly, and it happens to the best of us, they look old and truly haggard - the long hiatus since Seamen really hasn't helped.

Please don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this special, even if it was a little devoid of soul, whilst the May's Caterham was an impressive standout in its own right. However, this special really wasn't good enough to justify one annual episode, even in light of the pandemic. I also don't see how much longer these three can continue with the gruelling specials.

Honestly, I wish they had continued with the studio format albeit with a reduced episode count. I still look forward to the next special, which has apparently already finished filming in Scotland.

Good, but why make us wait so long. It just kills the vibe.
ansarmustafa0117 December 2020
Started off ok, nice to see the guys back out there. The cars were interesting choices as we're the mods.

It really did feel like a tough journey they made with a few great gags.

Especially the Jumping the Shark back in 2013 gag. Very fitting I guess.

I still don't understand why we waited so long for this episode it has pretty much killed off any excitement after the last one. I will always watch whatever these guys do. But more of it please.

I see they were using new cameras and the amount of terabytes wouldn't have made too much difference when editing.

Locations were interesting, maybe talk about the places they go more, as they can go anywhere in the world to make epic car travel programmes and average people like us can only dream of.

I would have given this episode a higher rating but I think I am being fair with this 8 that I have given it.

6 episodes a season I wouldn't mind having or even 4 but they need to come in a timely manner.

Well done to everyone involved making this show

Forgettable but still mildly entertaining
KastaRules17 December 2020
Same old, same old. It is nothing the trio has not done and said a gazillion times already, we all saw that coming.

The sad thing though is that they look really tired of being around each other, cracking the same jokes and pulling the same pranks. You can only do the same thing so many times before you get sick of it. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled the plug on the show in the very near future.

Anyway, try to watch this episode with low expectations and you will Not be too disappointed. It still has its moments.

Better than Seamen
chrischapman-4754519 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
OK, it may be the same old formula but it has good photography and genuine wit. Getting bored now with seeing them drive along almost impossible roads. Was it really the first adventure when one car didn't make it? I enjoyed the bits where Jeremy rewarded and appreciated the guy running up and down the road marshalling traffic - in the adventures they rarely truly interact with locals who are often just portrayed as bystanders. They also showed more of the film crew - maybe doing more to break the fourth wall would be an idea. They are filming another episode - apparently been seen in Scotland towing caravans behind huge American cars. At least it's much better and intelligent than what Top Gear has become. They just need some more across episode running jokes and new ideas - bring back Richard Porter? Why do they put themselves through such discomfort, eg James May in this one? Why not have more female involvement - that's one aspect of blokeish behaviour that's completely missing?

Felt extra scripted
hmnz-09317 December 2020
I know this show is always scripted but this one just felt like it was done way too much. Just the whole finding treasure left by pirates was a meh idea and having captain slow acting like his interested or believed it to be real was weird.

I think the main problem was that because the cars were so different from each other we didn't get the normal banter of my car is better than yours, or any proper challenge between cars.

James May especially seemed out of character for me in this grand tour special. I still found this to be enjoyable but just felt like it was missing something.

Hope the next episode doesnt take forever cause i feel that contributes to lower reviews also. I know its hard cause of covid but maybe they can make a special in England/Europe.

Lazy buggers
jeremygonzalez-9796417 December 2020
After so much time in the covid waiting room they've had time to properly edit the film, but you can see some massive continuity errors that even leave some gags pointless. Apart from that it follows the same formula of other espisodes,

Decent but not enough banter
chunkylefunga20 December 2020
<much better than seaman, so kudos on the improvement.

Were the cars ridiculous, yes. Were the roads a nightmare, yes. Did the show have enough back and forth between the trio, no.

And that's what it needed.

Some parts of the driving went on too long and then there were parts when a bit of banter and back and forth would have been great and it wasn't done (or it was cut out).

Editing hindered the show a bit.

Next episode would be handy to show the chaps chatting a bit more as their interactions really make the show.

Didn't feel as natural as other specials
There-I-Said-it17 December 2020
I'm just going to echo the sentiments here. The scripted bits really were more noticeable. The long gap in between episodes destroys the vibe and these guys aren't getting any younger so...

I used to love the specials more than the in studio stuff, but a lot of their natural humor came with their off the cuff comments doing the news on old Top Gear. The smaller challenges and races were also highly entertaining. This new format is supposed to be just that while trimming away the in studio stuff but they've trimmed away the organic elements of the show in the process.

Just happy it's back
brendanclontz19 December 2020
I'm really happy grand tour is back but it just didn't have that it factor. It felt to scripted, the trio felt like they liked each other to much. They felt to bonded by love then there usual hatred

Scripted and Pointless Plot
theprettybunch18 December 2020
I still rated this episode high because I love the trio together. I found this was probably my least favourite "special" they have ever done, including all their Top Gear ones. It felt way too scripted and the pirate treasure plot was really pointless. From the beginning you know they aren't going to find any treasure whatsoever! Which is basically the whole gag of it. It just made the episode feel way more scripted than usual because of it.

My favourite "special" from them would have to be the 'Survival of the Fattest' episode. It was such a simple idea, yet utterly genius... it's almost frightening. It didn't "feel" scripted or forced.

Honestly, just bring it all back to simple and seemingly low budgeted style of specials. Those specials have proven time and time again they are some of the best ones!

Entertaining, but lacking identity.
cookhayden-0960618 December 2020
Before I go on, this is still great entertainment for those of us who love the trio and it's worth watching. However, if you were to watch this with someone who hadn't already been a fan of the gents for years, then it might not catch on.

While this "Grand Tour" is very entertaining, it really missed the mark that we are atoned to from our favorite trio. There were a few classic aspects missing. Things that really seperate them from their respective field.

The individual and coliding personalities they own is the biggest plus and that is still here. Although, many of the other traits that seperates them from other car shows were lacking. For instance, usually the guys find a way to get technical about vehicle details and the places they are while still remaning vastly entertaining, but that wasn't the case. The cars were there, but they didn't really seem like the focal point of the show. The trip was amazing, but we didn't get much detail about the places they were. Again, making it hard to find the real focus, the real point of the adventure.

I found myself on several occasions getting excited to get more in depth details on what I was seeing and then boom...cut, onto the next scene. It felt like there was a lot more really solid footage and they tried to jam it all into one episode. Instead of getting the highlights and interesting details, we got the spark notes and the hidden gems that would've made it more interesting got cut for time.

Overall...it really just lacks a purpose. I don't know what the point was. I know that might sound a bit rough for a show like this, but I think we can all generally agree that this show is typically more than eye candy entertainment.

Same sentiment as other reviews...

Warning: Spoilers
Didn't feel like a proper special... the scripting was noticeable again. I feel like the choice of getting new cars and modifying them with off the shelf parts instead of buying proper off road vehicles (on their last legs for added entertainment) was a mistake. Just let the blithering idiots be more natural in reasonable cars!

I would've been more entertained if things were done more realistically.

They are back. Thats all that matters.
bozkurt-mehmet17 December 2020
Yes its not that satisfactory but consider that they are nearly sixty so yes it would feel kinda scripted but in this hell of a year we got some fun and adventure with our trio. So its all good to me. Well on that bombshell...

Laks the soul, felt scripted, artificial, somewhat driven and boring...
simon-658-23849618 December 2020
The good things: Scenery is fantastc, the idea of a treasure hunt warms the appetite, finaly, they are back - 3 Points. But then: This episode lacks the soul of past (even the mediocre) episodes, the sound effects (the bumps especially) and the music-scores are artificial, they do not fit and are too repetitive, they just annoy, Then, most important, is the story-line, that feels very scripted, artificial, too rushed, and yes, all in all, i was bored very soon. And: why, when there is low tide, 2 guys de-bark and one has to wait? Then, the secon 40ish minutes are just stuffed with unecessary stuff... Please, you can do better than that.. way better...
