Leave the World Behind (2023)

Leave the World Behind

Edit

Continuity

The seasons are in different stages throughout the movie. In some parts it's spring, then summer and then late fall as the trees are bare and the fields have been harvested.
At 1:1:10 (approx) G.H. is holding the "Death to America" pamphlet in both hands, the shot moves to Archie (from Archie's pov, G.H. drops it to the floor). Archie reaches for it and it is back in both G.H.'s hands again. A split second error that the editors missed.
Just before the R&B dance scene, Amanda and G.H. are having a discussion at a dining room table. It's raining outside, and the glass doors alternate between being wet and being dry.
When the ship coming in, everyone is running to get somewhere safe. But a red pants and his blue pants friend, still filming the ship. When the water splash so big, they are still not moving, until the red pants looking into us (camera), and start telling his blue pants friend to running, then his friend also looking into us for a second, then start running. Highly likely, both were shouted by the director to start run.
The Sandford family grab their things when they run from the oncoming ship. By the looks of it the ship pretty much buried their umbrella an chairs as they were in the direct path. But as they family was evacuating the beach they were carrying this stuff with them.

Factual errors

Flamingos do not land in deep water - they are wading birds. Their wings, when folded, do not look like fingers above their bodies, as was shown. And being poor fliers, they cannot take off upward as shown - they run along the water many yards before slowly gaining altitude.
When an explosion occurred in the city, the flash and boom were presented simultaneously. In reality, the boom would have arrived several seconds later.
When the oil tanker lands aground, it creates very little wake. In reality, the wake from a tanker of that size coming that close to shore would have created a noticeable disturbance prior to reaching the shore.
"Death to America" in Arabic is "al-mawt li-Amrika", but on the red flyers it's written "li-lawt li-Amrika" which is meaningless.
When Ethan Hawke is lost trying to drive to town, the maps are all failing because no GPS. However, all moving map displays systems like those on phone apps or in cars have a "basemap" which does not require downloading information from the internet or satellites. While his location may have been inaccurate or unknown, he would have had a map and could have used it (and other info such as the history of the drive to the house) with street signs to navigate, if slowly. Cars specifically keep a very detailed map of the entire region (the whole US in this case) so he could see down to street level without any connectivity using the infotainment system in the car.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

Airing on the television is the outdated Emergency Broadcast System (EBS). This was an emergency warning system used in the United States from 1963 to 1997, at which point it was replaced by the Emergency Alert System (EAS) which became operational on January 1, 1997.

However, it is against FCC regulations to use the EAS and its related tones in TV and movies. NBCUniversal was fined $530,000 in 2014 for airing an Olympus Has Fallen trailer that used real EAS alerts.

Its likely the movie used the old EBS alerts to get around that issue.
Regarding the Arabic message on the red papers saying "death to America", Clay say he suspects Iranians. While Iranians don't speak Arabic - they speak Farsi - this isn't necessarily an indicator of anything conclusive, given that similar flyers in multiple languages, including Korean, are mentioned as having been dropped from drones. Clay's comment relative to Iran is factual: they're known to have advanced drone capabilities, so it's entirely possible that Iranian ones were used. Finally, Iran is surrounded by Arabic-speaking countries, and it's possible they went into an alliance against the US.
The ship White Lion, so called "oil tanker", is actually a bulk carrier. One can tell by the shape of the hull, but most important, the deck shows the cargo hold hatches of a bulk carrier. A tanker would have lots of pipes on deck, not cargo holds.
Some viewers claim that Rose has already seen most of the final episode of Friends, as the still seen on her tablet is from the final scene of the final episode. However, this is just the still chosen by the streaming service to appear during prolonged pausing or interruption of service and does not mark the "position" of her viewing.
Some viewers argue that the plants in the hydroponic garden in the bunker Rose enters should be dead, as "the owners of the home have not been home in a while". However, the area consists of lavish holiday homes (like the one in which the main characters are staying), and the neighbors' house is obviously large and expensive, so it stands to reason that there would be an automated system to maintain the hydroponic garden during the owners' absence.

Revealing mistakes

A ship of the size and depth of the White Lion, described as an oil tanker, would have ground to a halt long before reaching the beach.

Miscellaneous

In the "Tesla Scene", Amanda could have easily drive off the road on the side and, therefor, easily avoid all incoming Teslas.
When the ship hits the beach, the boy films in portrait mode. In the car, he watches the video in landscape mode.

Anachronisms

Since Rosie is on last episode of last season of Friends, she should have recognized her mother as Susie Underpants from Season 2 Episode 13.

Audio/visual unsynchronised

Deer running through a forest are nearly silent, other than the occasional sound of crunching leaves. They do not sound like a stampede of cattle, which seems to be what the Foley artists used for the CG deer.
When Amanda first places the turntable needle on the vinyl recording of "Too Close" you hear the sound of needle talk. However, once the song starts the sound of needle talk is no longer there. This indicates that a digital version of the song was used.

Crew or equipment visible

At approx. 08:55, as Amanda surveys the home and finds the master bedroom, the shadow of the camera rig can be seen through a sunlight flare through a window on the floor to the left of the bed.

Errors in geography

A sign shows that the characters are in Charleston Harbor which is 12 hours away from Long Island.
The Sandfords are renting a home in the Hamptons on Long Island. Manhattan is not clearly visible from anywhere in the Hamptons, as is implied in one part of the film.

Plot holes

GH could not have been so distracted by the watch in the sand as to not notice the surrounding before the camera angle revealed it. So his surprise makes no sense.

Character error

GH said of the Love You Bug, "Turns out, it was just two teenagers in the Philippines."

The "Love You Bug" (actually called "ILOVEYOU") was written by a then 24 year old (Onel de Guzman), although he was from the Philippines.

As a side note, de Guzman couldn't be prosecuted because there were no laws in the Philippines against making malware at the time of its creation.
When Ruth comes out to the pool in her bikini and sits on the sun lounger, Amanda (Julia Robert's) is sat the her left on another sun lounger crossed legged. The shot pans to the son who is filming Ruth in her bikini from the pool and instead of Amanda being on the sun lounger, the shot has a pair of legs and feet belonging to a dark skinned character. This can only be Ruth's father, but he is at the beach where he discovers the house is trashed and the planes crashing.
