Complete rubbish

Warning: Spoilers
This is a German 7-minute short film from 7 years ago. The writer and director is Grzegorz Muskala, who made a handful of short film in his career and directed his first long movie for television 2 years ago. However, in this short film I see no talent that would justify a career in the film industry. I cannot say a lot about the talent of the actors, but the two characters were so weakly written that it's just impossible for any actor to turn this into a quality movie. Rosalie Thomass plays the female. She is obviously a sadist who likes to humiliate her boyfriends or maybe even people in general. She tells her lover to repeatedly ask her to marry him, so she can deny him again and again. Thomass is a prolific actress these days and has been in quite a few German films in recent years, also in famous ones. I knew her from "Life is nothing for cowards". The male protagonist is played by Thomas Fränzel. I am not familiar with him at all, probably because he does not have a career half as big as his co-star's. He brings nothing to his character either really and turns out to be a woman beater also. Great stuff, two really likable fellows. Looks like they are perfect for each other.

This is a truly pretentious film. It already starts with the apparently artistic title. And after he punched her hard and insulted her after she humiliated him repeatedly, the two are still together and there's full harmony again. Complete rubbish I say. These 7 minutes are a prime example of failed movie-making and storytelling. Should never have been made. Stay far far away.

I get the point but it is annoyingly made

Two students are relaxing in their bedroom when the boy proposes to the girl, only to be repeatedly turned down.

I get the point of this little short film and, in a way, I suppose I should be charmed by how it shuns the fleeting idea of cinema romance (the impulsive, the sudden) and instead takes a stand to suggest that marriage and relationships generally are not things to be launched into without thought just because it feels right at that moment, but rather they are things worth waiting for, worth working at to make happen. I get it. And I agree and I was disappointed not to take this message away because I do generally like it when a film goes against the grain but does it in an honest way. The problem was the way the film made this point – by having the girl reject the man frequently. OK we have the line of dialogue in there that makes the point and the man himself showing that he is in the moment rather than in the relationship, but the smug attitude of the woman derails the whole thing.

It is hard to be charmed by the message when the delivery is quite so irritating. I understand the concept here but it just grates me too much to be able to focus on the message. The comments on the YouTube page for this film are full of insults for the female character here (which in fairness is the norm for "comments" on that site) and unfortunately they do have a point – she is young, she is loved and she is attractive but her blunt rejection is cruel and her requests to be asked again are mocking – the film may mean for them to be wise, patient and full of love – but this is not how she comes across and it really scuppers the film because it changes the message from "long-lasting love is not the romantic gesture you see in films" to "pretty girls can be the worst at times".

A nice idea and maybe it strikes a nerve with some who fall in love with the (admittedly worthy) message but for me it was lost behind irritation and smug cruelty. Shame.

the question
Kirpianuscus24 December 2018
A nice film. Without a real story. Young people. The question of him. Repeated . Her answer. You feel the sense of both. Admiring the fight in bed, the gestures and atitudes and reactions. But each is new step far by a coherent story. And that is. Result, a decent film. About nothing. Only, maybe, support for memories for public. So, only strange detail remains be only ...the title.
