For the shooting of "After the Storm: Lessons from the Northern Edge" Co-Director and Cinematographer JD Marlow spent 7 consecutive days out at sea with the crew of the F/V Tradition and Captain Ronnie Shrader in the Elephant Trunk Region off the coast of Cape May, NJ. It was during this 170 hour trip, during the dangerous winter month of December, that some of the most compelling images of the film were recorded.
All shooting was conducted over the course of a 10 month period, beginning in April 2007. Over 40 hours of footage was recorded and 20 interviews were conducted. Editing of the final product required an additional 6 months of work.
Other than Ahmed Al-Gendy (composer), JD Marlow and Amanda Bergeron were the only two members of the crew.
No lights were used in the shooting of the film. All interviews were conducted using whatever natural light was available at the time.
If it were not for the filmmakers having to constantly rent cars to reach filming destinations, the project would have cost virtually nothing to make.
