An absolutely perfect ending to a pairing that's lasted two, arguably three years.Whatever decision or accident of contract meant Ric and Mattie leaving together, it was spot on.We're treated to their frustrations and misunderstandings but everything comes right in the end.Is Nathan really that dense as to criticise Ric and push Mattie back towards him?The way she leaps to his defence is marvellous.Then we get that incredibly sweet scene of them talking on the phone to each other and realising they're standing at opposite ends of the quad. Everything between them from them on is pure magic.The last scene holds no purpose except to give us a last chance to see them together.(And give Mattie her third-or is it fourth?-costumes of the episode.)
It's appropriate we hear about the birth of Cassie's baby in an episode that effectively seals off that era.It seals off also the failed Miles/Leah romance as he and Kirsty start to show an interest in each other.And then there's Annie and Jai, pointing the way to the future.Which, if they can keep this up, is looking bright.
