- The Past
A young Victoria scribbles in her journal about Ana coming back that day. She writes that everything will be ready, but different from before. Victoria rips the pages out of her journal, then looks at a photo of the Helstrom family... with Father's face scratched out. All of the photos of him have their face scratched out.
Victoria continues to write that Ana will be safe, while scratching at her shoulder until she draws blood. Daimon comes in behind Victoria, and he tells her that she needs to eat something. Victoria does and points out that Daimon didn't set a place for Ana. When Daimon tells his mother that Ana isn't coming back, Victoria insists that it's not true. She says that she'll save her meal for Ana, and Daimon starts to tell her something.
There's a knock at the door, and Victoria figures that it's Ana and runs to answer it. Daimon tries to stop her, but Victoria opens the door. Dr. Meyer from the Behavioral Health Department is there with a colleague and two policemen. As they take Victoria away, Victoria says that she can't leave her son by himself. The social workers take Victoria away the social worker with Meyer goes into the house.
Victoria continues to relive the day she was taken away. As she does, cracks appear in the ceiling,
The Present
Daimon drives past his old home, then continues on without stopping to his university office. Bryce, un possessed, comes in Daimon wonders why he's there when they agreed not to talk to each other after the exorcism. The college student says that he's been having a hard time with everything that happened, and explains that all of his fraternity brothers are dead. He remembers all of their bloody bodies, before he was possessed and "woke up" at Damion's place.
Bryce asks if he killed them, and Daimon tells him that it wasn't him. He advises Bryce not to drop out of university, and says he'll have someone call Bryce who takes care of such things. Bryce doesn't see how it will do any good, and isn't impressed with Damion's sympathy. Angry, Bryce walks out of the office.
Ana wakes up from a nightmare of one of Father's victims emerging from her grave. She briefly imagines lying in the dirt on her bed, and rolls onto the floor.
Damion calls Gabriella in and asks her to talk to Bryce. She asks if Damion feels any responsibility to the people he "saved", and if he forgets the people that he frees. Damion doesn't believe he's suited to the job, and Gabriella agrees to talk to Bryce. He asks if she's all right, and Gabriella dismisses his concerns and walks off with Bryce's phone number.
At St. Theresa's, Hastings looks into Victoria's cell and tells her that it's time to get up. Victoria lies seemingly sleeping on the floor, and Hastings goes in with an orderly. Hastings takes out a syringe with a sedative and approaches Victoria, and discovers that Victoria is unconscious and clawing into the floor with her fingernails.
As Victoria relieves the day she was taken away in her memories, she notices the wallpaper peeling from her dining room wall. There's a knock at the door, and she runs to answer it. Ana is there, and mother and daughter hug.
Ana arrives at St. Theresa's in response to Damion's call. He tells her that Hastings found Victoria in a coma, and they don't know why. Victoria is on a gurney in her cell, and Ana says that she can feel the presence of the skull. Damion can feel it as well, and Damion wonders if Chris is there.
In the dreamscape, Victoria serves Ana her favorite food. She asks Ana if Father hurt her, and how Ana got away. Ana says that she hit Father and ran. Damion says that Father is too strong for Ana to escape from him, and Ana counts the time between thunder and lightning on the storm outside. Victoria tells Damion to leave Ana alone, and Ana sees a shadow on the living room drapes. The girl screams, and Victoria goes to pull aside the drapes and reveal that no one is there.
The lights go out from a lightning strike, and Ana says, "He's coming."
Caretaker searches outside the asylum, then comes back in and tells Damion and the others that there's no sign of Chris. Damion wonders why Chris would come there, and Ana figures the skull did something to Chris. Caretaker says that the skull is trying to do its job to contain evil, and suggests that since Father marked Victoria, the demon is now possessing her. Caretaker warns that the closer the skull gets to Victoria, the worse she'll get.
Daimon insists that they need to find Chris as soon as possible, and wonders where he is. The siblings go to Victoria's cell and Hastings points out the hole in the floor that Victoria was clawing open.
Daimon figures Chris is beneath St. Theresa's, and the siblings and Hastings go to the sewers there. Ana asks Caretaker what happens to Chris once the skull is done with him. Caretaker says that it depends on what is left of Chris afterward, and Daimon tells Caretaker to let him and Ana handle Chris. Caretaker insists on going with them, figuring Ana is more concerned about Chris than either Daimon or Victoria.
At the university, Gabriella approaches Bryce and introduces herself. She explains that she's a novitiate, and she knows what Daimon can do and the demons. Bryce tells her to leave him alone, and Gabriella says that she's faced Magoth before. The student realizes Magoth could come back, and Gabriella asks him to tell her what happened so she can stop it happening from others.
Hastings checks on Victoria, who is comatose and still dreaming.
In the dreamscape with the lights still out, Victoria lights candles and holds Ana. Daimon isn't impressed with Victoria's attempt to comfort Ana, and insists that the truth is more important than the stories Victoria is telling Ana about thunder. Something moves in the house, and Daimon goes to check the circuit breaker. Victoria reminds him that they don't go in the basement, and Ana cowers in the corner.
Someone pounds on the front door, and Victoria holds her children. The pounding stops, and then a figure crashes in through the window.
In the cell, Victoria convulses.
In the dreamscape, Daimon disappears and Victoria goes to the stairs looking for him.
Ana, Daimon, and Caretaker search the sewers for Chris. Daimon says that they should destroy the skull, but Ana disagrees since they need the skull to stop Father. Caretaker agrees with Ana, much to Damion's disgust. Ana points out food wrappings where Chris was, and someone moves in the shadows down the tunnel. Caretaker finds dead rats that Chris was eating, and Ana goes to investigate the figure.
In the dreamscape, Ana leads Victoria to her room and suggests they play a game while they hide. She insists that Victoria has to protect her, and tells her mother that she let Father take her. Ana asks how Victoria could do it, telling Victoria that she didn't care about her. When Ana says that Victoria spent all of her time writing in her journal, Victoria wonders how Ana knew it since the journal was secret and Ana was already gone.
Ana ignores her mother's questions and suggests she have some pretend tea. Victoria remembers that her Ana never came home, and there's more knocking at the front door. The bedroom door closes on its own, and Victoria can't open it. She turns to "Ana" and says that it's her.
Gabriella and Bryce go to a coffee shop, and Bryce describes what happened to him when Magoth possessed him. He doesn't know if he communicated with Magoth, but it made him feel and refeel the worst days of his life. Gabriella tells Bryce that it wasn't real, but Bruce says that it was torture. She tells him that she understood how some can realize there's no good answers, and assures Bryce that she and Daimon won't let anything bad happen to Bryce again. Bryce isn't convinced.
In the dreamscape, Ana takes on the adult form of Mother. She explains that her form is the last form she took, but others killed her. She took on Ana's form to gain Victoria's cooperation, and insists that now they have to help each other. Mother says that Father hurt both of them, and Father is one pounding on the door so they're both in danger. The entity insists that she's not the enemy and Father put her in Victoria years ago, and it's Mother's punishment as well as Victoria's.
The ceiling cracks, and Mother tells Victoria that Father is trying to break Victoria down and get in. Mother has a plan but needs Victoria's help, so they can get back to their respective children. She then tells Victoria that it's not safe there, and leads her out through a door.
Damion and Caretaker search for Ana, and they talk about how they've gotten used to taking care of Ana and Victoria, respectively. Caretaker asks how long Damion is going to keep doing it, and Damion says as long as it takes. The older man says that there are ways to make Victoria more comfortable, and destroying the skull won't help her. Even if Damion manages to pull Kthara out of Victoria, it won't win the war. Damion doesn't believe Caretaker, and points out that he's been trying to kill his family for years. Caretaker insists that he's been protecting them, but Damion doesn't believe it.
Mother leads Victoria downstairs, and Victoria sees the Consumption ideogram beneath the wallpaper. Father breaks in, and Mother leads Victoria away as Father enters the house.
Ana continues searching for Chris and finally finds him crouching over the skull. He says that Ana has no idea who he is anymore, and yells at her to stay away. Ana says that they can stop whatever the skull is doing to him, but Chris refuses to go back to being her errand boy. Damion runs up, following the voices, and Ana tells him to back off and she can handle it.
Approaching Chris, Ana tells him that her father is back. The only thing that can stop him is the skull. Once she has the skull, the situation ends and she can take Chris out on the town, like in the good old days. Chris tells Ana that he can't, and he needs him while Ana doesn't. Ana insists that she does need Chris, but she needs the skull more and asks Chris not to make her hurt her best friend to get it back.
Damion advances on Chris, and Ana telekinetically throws him against the wall. Damion throws her back the same way, and Ana insists she won't let Damion hurt Chris. As Caretaker arrives, Ana yells at Damion to just let Victoria go. Damion says that it was his fault she was committed. Pipes from the ceiling telekinetically fall, and Caretaker pulls Damion out of the way of them. Chris slips away in the confusion.
Mother and Victoria run down to the basement and Mother locks the door. A bloody Damion is lying on the floor, and Victoria breaks into tears. Mother tells Victoria that "Damion" isn't real, and Victoria has to ignore the moment from her past. Victoria sees Ana being dragged away, and Mother tells Victoria it isn't real and Victoria can't change what happened.
Victoria sobs that she could have done something, and "Damion" disappears. Mother tells her that they have to hide as Father pounds on the door. When Mother asks Victoria again for her help, Victoria wonders why she needs Victoria's help. She figures that now Mother is weak, and that's why everything in the dreamscape is falling apart. Victoria says that Mother only cares about herself, and a real mother sacrifices for her children.
When Victoria realizes that "Father" is something Mother can't control, Mother grabs her arm. Victoria throws Mother back into the wall, and goes to confront Father. She figures that if she dies, Mother dies as well but Damion and Ana are free. Victoria opens the door and lets "Father", the Keeper in humanoid form, walk past her and toward Mother.
The trio chase after Chris and find an access tunnel leading up.
Victoria goes into convulsions as she has a heart attack.
In the dreamscape, Victoria clutches at her chest and hears Hastings call to her to stay with her. Victoria discovers that her children are gone and that the front door leads to her cell.
Chris, carrying the cloth-wrapped skull, dresses as an orderly and goes to Victoria's cell as the orderlies head there with electrostimulation equipment. He unwraps the skull, just as the trio arrive and telekinetically slam Chris into the wall and knock him out. Ana checks on Chris, while Damion crouches over the skull. It vibrates as Victoria flatlines.
In the dreamscape, Victoria pulls away more of the wallpaper where the ideogram was. The cell door is beneath it, and Victoria looks through the slot into her cell where her physical body is dying.
Ana runs over as the skull cracks, and Victoria sits up and yells "Stop"
Later, the orderlies take Victoria out to the courtyard in her wheelchair. She holds the skull in her lap, and says that whatever the skull is, Kthara is terrified of it and they can use the skull to hurt her. However, Victoria doesn't know how to do it. She tells Ana that Kthara used Ana's childhood image against her, and Ana walks off.
Chris paces the cell he's been putting in, saying that he needs the Keeper and it needs him. Ana is watching him through the door slot, and Chris yells at her to bring the skull to him. Hastings and Caretaker are with Ana, and Caretaker warns that the skull's effects will take time to wear off. Ana is not consoled.
In her office, Gabriella looks at an article about Crow going missing. Damion comes in and asks how it went with Bryce. Gabriella says that the formerly possessed need more help than any of them realize, and they need to talk about their experiences. He says that he knows it now, and he tells Gabriella that Victoria is back. Gabriella says that there's something she needs to show Damion, and it's a matter of life and death.
Gabriella takes Damion to the hotel, and they find a dead Finn laying in a pool of blood behind the desk. There are other corpses nearby, and Gabriella tells Damion that they're too late.
