Ken Campbell was an actor who was known to give a fruity performance even an eccentric one. In the Ken Campbell Roadshow Bob Hoskins and Sylvester McCoy were two of his early protégés.
In A Brief's Tale, Ken Campbell gives a very restrained performance. He plays Alex Gladwell the solicitor tasked to get Jack Lynn off the various charges he faces especially as he was not directly involved in the British Gas robbery but the police have placed him on the scene.
The strength of G F Newman's writing is evident as Gladwell goes on about his work taking instructions from Lynn and preparing the defence. Gladwell takes some extra money off Lynn so he can pay it to his barrister on top of the legal aid money. It is all very low key.
DI Pyall is going to make sure that he has a watertight case against Lynn including getting the grass Harding to give evidence in court against Lynn. His task is made easier as Judge Quigley will not hear a word against the police being corrupt.
Gladwell gets a very good barrister for Lynn and despite the weak evidence including a mask that does not fit him, his chances are not looking good with the jury. The main reason is Judge Quigley is against him.
I would like to say that such judges as Quigley are the exception rather than the rule even 40 years after this series was made but I am not so sure. I know of a Judge in the Manchester Immigration Tribunal who is fighting a rearguard action to keep Britain white. A laudable aim if you are a fascist but a judge's job is to dispense with justice not making out that almost all the appellants are liars and do not come within the immigration rules on the balance of probabilities.
