pleasantly watchable documentary about Ancient Egypt
This documentary examines the life and times of pharaoh Amenhotep III, as illuminated by a series of recent archeological discoveries. Amenhotep III seems to have been blessed with an impressive number of wives, which means that the documentary pays ample attention to the "harem" system existing at royal courts. One can but hope that these pharaohs had an excellent memory : it must be hell on earth trying to remember the names of, say, one Great Royal Spouse, six lesser queens, five regular wives, fifty concubines, eighty dancing girls, ninety palace maids and thirty casual one-night stands. Probably these guys called everyone "Dear", which has been the immemorial salvation of male adulterers and philanderers all over the world.
But I digress. The documentary is notable mainly for its beautiful computer-generated reconstructions of ancient buildings, complete with colorful tiles and frescoes. These images fill the viewer with humility - and with wonder at the genius of these long-dead artists... There is also an attempt at the reconstruction of human faces lost to death and oblivion. The result is quite moving.
