In 1917, David Powlett-Jones arrives at Bamfyld School seeking a position as a history teacher. He's been discharged from the army as a Second Lieutenant after suffering a leg wound but primarily due to shell shock. Powell-Jones is a working class Welsh boy and feels very much out of place almost from the moment he arrives. He's welcomed by the Headmaster, Algy Herries, who does his best to make him feel welcome in his new surroundings. David makes his classes interesting and quickly gains the respect of his students. His views on society and the war in particular clash with those of his colleagues and as a result his fellow teachers are less forthcoming, particularly Carter with whom he clashes almost from the beginning.
