- Dorothy is missing. As Niles and Cliff are away searching for her, Larry deals with some ageless astronauts who returns from space. There's a funeral in the Underground. Vic discovers a connection between Roni and S.T.A.R. Labs.
- A spaceship lands at the manor, and Dorothy escapes in it. While Niles and Cliff go after the girl, Larry plays hosts to the three visitors who arrived in the spaceship. Meanwhile, Rita attends the rehearsal for the community theater, Vic scans Roni, the alters hold a funeral procession for their fallen comrades and Jane has a change of mind.—Gislef
- In the manor furnace room, Dorothy sits and cries, next to Jane/Baby Doll's wax-covered body. In the Underground, the alters gather around the corpses of the two fallen alters, and Jane looks down at the body of the alters.
Niles goes to Dorothy's room, calling to her to wake up. He discovers that his daughter isn't in her room, and Cliff arrives with the severed finger of the car thief. When the Niles complains about the brutality, Cliff claims that the finger "fell into his lap" when he tried to stop the thief and his accomplice. Niles doesn't care and tells Cliff to help him find Dorothy. Cliff puts the finger in a refrigerator and goes to help Niles look.
Larry and Rita take the bus back to Cloverton, and Larry apologizes for Paul selling them out. Rita assures him that he has nothing to apologize for her and hugs her friend. She says that she has a commitment in town and has to purchase street clothes for the community theater production of "Our Town". Larry assures her that she isn't being selfish and figures she isn't looking for fame by joining a community theater. He hopes that Rita finds what she's looking for and leaves.
After sex with Vic, Roni gets dressed. She falls onto him and they kiss. Roni says that she has to work to pay off her medical bills, and Vic asks what medical expenses she has. She lists what they are and says they're the cost of dealing with black ops. They kiss and as Roni goes, Vic asks if he can look inside of her to see what's broken so he can relieve some of her pain. Roni agrees as long as Vic tells her about his PTSD when he doesn't share it in group. Vic agrees and Roni agrees to stay with him for the day.
As Larry walks to the manor, he hears something rocket overhead.
Cliff checks the basement and finds Jane's body. He takes it to Niles and says that Dorothy wasn't there, and Niles confirms that Jane is breathing. Niles says that what happened to Jane is Dorothy's doing, and wonders why. Cliff demands answers, and Larry arrives and says that he hasn't seen Dorothy but a spacecraft landed nearby.
Valentina Vostok and two astronauts, Zip and Specs, land their spaceship on the yard and walk toward the house. Niles watches them through the window and tells Larry to say he's not there. He explains that in 1955, the Bureau gave him funding for his Immortus initiative, and he sent a research team into outer space. Niles lost contact with them in the early 60s and assumed they were dead. He complains that the astronauts' timing couldn't be worse, and tells Larry to keep them there until he returns.
Larry goes out to greet the three astronauts and introduces himself. Zip and Specs declare themselves the Pioneers of the Uncharted, chosen by Niles to pilot the Icarus spaceship into space. They introduce themselves, and Larry recognizes Zip the pilot and says that his son was a fan before Zip disappeared. Valentina asks where Niles is, and Larry claims that Niles is tied up at the moment.
The alters put on a funeral procession for their fallen selves, and when Jane asks what's going on the Secretary tells her that there was a vote. Jane points out that they don't know if they're dead, but the Secretary says that they don't know what Candlemaker did to them. She says that death doesn't mean anything to them and some of the alters disappear and go dead for a while, but there's no evidence they can be pulled unless they "pull a Miranda" and jump into the well. Jane realizes that they plan to throw the alters' bodies into a well, and the Secretary tells her that there was a vote,
Cliff and Neil search for Dorothy, and Niles finds a note from Dorothy saying that she didn't do it and it was Candlemaker. She says that she's leaving, and the manor shakes. Outside, Larry and the astronauts watch as the Icarus lifts off. As it leaves the atmosphere, Dorothy looks out a porthole.
Niles leads Cliff out and says that they're going to bring her back. They go to a garage where Niles has a spaceship, and Niles leads Cliff in and then lifts the spaceship off. Niles explains that he built it in 1955 before Sputnik, and used magic as well as science. He asks Cliff for the apple he's holding as fuel for the ship, and tells him that if he wants Niles' help, he'll help Niles recover Dorothy. Cliff reluctantly hands over the apple, and Niles uses it to power up the spaceship. The ship takes off, and as they go Niles wonders if Dorothy knows what he's done for her. He mutters that Dorothy can't hide from him, and figures that she's too dangerous to go traipsing around without realizing that her actions have consequences.
The astronauts figure Niles was on the ship, and Valentina figures that their reunion will have to wait. Zip and Specs start cheerfully mock-fighting and then run inside. Valentina apologizes to Larry, saying they've been in space for 65 years and it's gotten weird. She introduces herself to Larry and Larry has heard of her and her disappearance. Valentina has heard of Larry, and he says it was a long time ago. As they shake hands, the negative spirits in Larry's body and Valentina's react.
Rita arrives at the theater and sits in the seats. The leading actress, Isabel Feathers, introduces herself to Rita and gives her a copy of the script. When Rita says that she doesn't need one because she knows "Our Town" by heart, Isabel says that they're doing a different play with the same name. Micki steps up and explains the script is written from what they know about the day Covington was sucked into the ground. They begin with going through Act One, and Isabel tells Rita that she's playing the part of the "Blob Lady".
Inside the manor, Valentina tells Larry that Niles assembled a team to explore a teleporting rift, a cosmic entity. Niles believed the energy was a source of time-dilating problem, and the key to immortality. The astronauts went into space six years before Larry's accident, and figures Niles used their research to send his X-15 into the rift. Larry tells Valentina that the rift ruined her life, and Valentina says that they considered it a gift. She says that they chased the rift into space, losing contact with Earth but continuing because Niles says it was important. Valentina eventually did a spacewalk to take a sample, and she touched the energy and a negative spirit entered her.
Valentina knows what will happen if Larry removes his bandages, and says that it happened to "this body" as well. She eventually learned to contain the radiation, and she lived in the ship's airlock for five years before she learned how to do it. Valentina eventually reached harmony with her spirit, and Larry admits that he's never "mastered" his spirit. She says that the path to harmony was to accept that they were a single being.
In Roni's apartment, Vic scans Roni and explains what Nobody did to him to make him beat Silas. He describes what else the group has faced, and continues his scan. Vic finds indications that Roni had tech refused to her spine, and that one of them broke an attachment point. Roni knew it, and admits that it's killing her. She says that she doesn't have many options except to joke about it, and Vic tells her that she's hacking the military computers to figure out how to neutralize what is inside of her. Roni tells him not to use her in his attempt to redemption, and what is happening to her is a small price for what she's done.
Vic hacks the government anyway and finds her blueprints. He discovers that one of the material vendors was STAR Labs, and another was Caulder Robotics.
On the Moon, Candlemaker walks beside Dorothy in her spacesuit. He tells her that Manny was a child's thing and she needs a new friend and protector. Dorothy tells him to shut up, and Candlemaker explains that as she grows up, so does he. She says that it's his fault and she didn't want to hurt Jane, and Candlemaker tells her that she did wish. Candlemaker says that big girl wishes have big girl consequences, but he'll always be at her side. Dorothy yells at him to go away, and Candlemaker does so.
The alters go to the well carrying the bodies of their two fallen, and Jane points out to Hammerhead that there's a new alter there, the Balladeer. Jane wonder s what it means if Baby Doll is dead. Hammerhead figures it means more adulthood, and Jane points out that Baby Doll is one of the only ones who trusted men. She wonders if they're going to destroy that part of them, and Hammerhead asks Jane as Primary if she has a better plan.
Jane walks off without an answer and goes to a house and the bedroom where Kay is sitting working on a puzzle. When Jane tells Kay that she's responsible for what happened and made them stay, Kay looks up at her. Jane says that she doesn't know how to fix it, and asks Kay to tell her that she's okay and didn't hurt her. She asks what she is supposed to do, and Kay tells her that knowing what to do is Jane's job.
Vic checks with Silas, who says that STAR is a big company and he doesn't know about Roni's blueprints. Silas wonders what Vic's angle is on it, and he's not going to do digger without context. When Vic says that it's about a girl, Silas figures that it's young love and advises him to slow down. Vic points out that Silas' company sold high tech to the same black ops, and Silas says that he needed the money to "repair" Vic.
Zip and Specs continue mock-fighting, and Larry looks at Jane's comatose body. Valentina approaches Larry, who says that Jane may be the only family he has left. Valentina figures that when Larry thinks of his family, his spirit grows restless. Larry points out that his son tried to betray him and his grandson was shot in the gut, and he wouldn't have known his son committed suicide if the spirit hadn't shown him. Valentina suggest that the spirit showed Larry what happened to Gary to tell him that he can release his dead son from his conscience, and there's relief in letting the past go. Larry tells her that her Zen attitude is inhuman, and that his son killing himself over Larry is worth being tormented by. Angry, Larry storms off.
Niles and Cliff land on the Moon, and Niles says that it's all his fault because he was desperate to give Dorothy a family before he died. Niles pushes Jane before she was ready, and Jane is like a daughter to him. He says that he just wanted Dorothy to be normal, and that made him a terrible father and a bastard possibly responsible for the world's end. Niles explained that when he confined Dorothy to protect the world, her imaginary creations got more dangerous and her power is enough to cleave the Earth in two if she wished it so. He begs Cliff to tell Dorothy anything to get her back.
Cliff goes out, finds footprints, and follows them to Dorothy. She's making a grave with stones and says that she doesn't need help, and Cliff asks to sit with her. Dorothy doesn't refuse, and Cliff sits down.
Isabel gives a monologue as Blob Lady, about how she would suffocate everyone who mocked her under the weight of her rage. When she's done, Mick congratulates everyone and says that it's important work, and they'll finish the next day. As everyone else leaves, Isabel approaches Rita and asks if she's acted before. Rita says that she has once or twice, and wonders if Blob Lady is more human than Isabel portrayed her. Isabel says that she thought she was, and figures Blob Lady has a neediness like she's vying for her parents' approval. The actress says that people will run from Blob Lady when they realize that she's a monster inside, and her resentment is the one thing keeping her from sucking the entire world into her body. Isabel leaves and Rita figures that she's found her nemesis.
Larry approaches the still squabbling Zip and Spec, and asks how they're still so young. They keep repeating the same words, and Valentina comes in and says that the two astronauts died a long time ago. A benign spore from a distant planet invaded their bodies, but the spore isn't contagious. Larry realizes that they came back so Valentina could bury the two men, and Valentina says that they have to put the past behind them so they can continue their journey. When Larry apologizes for being so irritable, Valentina tells him that there is beauty in suffering and they've seen much. Earth is still the most beautiful place in the galaxy because it's a spinning globe of suffering.
Dorothy finally asks Cliff if he's feeling okay. He says that he has no idea, and Dorothy figures that she keeps messing things up. Dorothy thinks that she's a bad person, and says that she's going to stay in space so she won't hurt anyone again. She breaks into tears, and Cliff asks about the grave. Dorothy says that the grave is for Manny, and explains that her mother gave Manny to her and he was the last piece of her Dorothy had. Cliff says that his daughter lost his mother when she was young, and from what she can tell his daughter is a good person. He explains that they're all trying to figure out what people they are, Jane included, and Cliff assures Dorothy that Jane will understand. Cliff tells Dorothy that she's not alone but her feeling will pass, because it always does. Dorothy says that the place is beauty, and Cliff agrees and tells her that he's glad they came there.
Cliff and Dorothy go back to the spaceship hand in hand, and Niles hugs his daughter when she comes in. He makes her promise to never make another wish, and Cliff watches them and says that it's ad.
Valentina and Larry Zip and Spec into a grave on the manor grounds, and the two of them slowly run down. The Russian's last words are advice to Larry not to eat any fruit that grows there. Larry tells the two Pioneers to rest in peace, and hopes that it was all painless. As they go back to the manor, Valentina thanks Larry for his help and now it's time for them to leave. First they'll go to Valentina's home and see how they've been forgotten, and then hopefully they'll sever their final bond to Earth.
Larry tells her that he's going to return to his family but he's going to mend his ties rather than sever them, or die trying. Valentina and Larry hug, and Valentina advises space if he wants a perspective on Earth. They hug, and their spirits react at the touch. Larry wonders if it wants space, and says that it doesn't matter because as long as it's in a human being, they're going to act like a human being... and human beings need family.
The alters continue to the well, but they stop. When the other alters worry that "he" is in the well, Hammerhead says that if He is, they'll beat the shit out of Him together. Jane runs up and tells them not to do it, and as Primary she says they have to give the broken ones times to mend. She warns that they don't know it works, but they do know that there's no going back.
Miranda emerges from the well and points out that Jane has never been in the well. She admits that she killed herself but was reborn in the well. She says that it's time, and the alters drop the two bodies into the well. Their stations collapse, and Miranda tells the alters they won't need them anyway.
In the outside world, Jane comes out of her coma, crying.
Jane asks now what, and Miranda tells Jane that if she steps aside as Primary, she'll show her what Kay wants.
In the real world, Jane stops crying. Miranda takes over the body and the wax fades away. Miranda draws in a breath of air and smiles.
As Niles returns his spaceship to Earth, Cliff looks at it through a porthole. Dorothy sleeps, and Cliff covers her over and then wonders if they need an imaginary intervention. Niles worries that Jane may never be the same, and gives Cliff a helmet to put on Dorothy. He promises that he'll never ask Cliff another favor, and Cliff says that Dorothy is all right but deserves to be safe and happy after Niles is gone. He says that he's in if Dorothy needs a new family, and Niles says that his sentiment means the world to him... but they're not going home. Niles then ejects Cliff into space.
