More Fantasy From A Convicted Criminal
The third episode from BANGED UP ABROAD has a slightly different feel in that the protagonists aren't people who are trying to smuggle class A drugs but gold . It's also an episode featuring Nepal a country I know well having backpacked there a couple of times . That said the episode does feature greedy protagonists we're supposed to feel sorry for
The episode centres around Piers Hernu who from the outset takes the biscuit where grief whoring is involved . He claims to have a thyroid condition which led to serious clinical depression . Really ? The thyroid controls serotonin levels and dopamine uptake ? I don't think so and apparently suffering from clinical depression Piers claims he had a great time travelling across the world . So you're too depressed to hold down a job but well enough to visit sunny destinations and have sex ? Piers defends himself by saying his thyroid condition means his body temperature is lowered so needs warmth . Yeah sure ya do Piers
So Piers gets caught up in a scam to smuggle gold from Hong Kong to Nepal where the gold is transferred to India thereby having no need to pay tax or duty on the gold . The scam itself seems somewhat amateurish involving the gold mules to wear a waistcoat heavily laden with gold which will be given to them just before they leave Hong Kong . There is of course nothing suspicious about four blokes hanging around the toilets of an airport departure lounge looking very nervous . They land at Kathmandu where their plan is blown almost as soon as they land which quickly ends up as four years in a Nepalese prison
There's a couple of interesting aspects to the episode . One is despite the interiors possibly being anywhere the outside locations are genuinely filmed at Kathmandu airport with their very distinctive red brick pillars . The other thing is that the episode contains swearing . Standing outside an airport discussing a visit to the Monkey Temple only to have Nepelese cops sticking guns to your head probably does deserve colourful language . The episode finishes with a foot note claiming Piers heard he was set up by the smugglers because due to Nepelese law an informer receives 10 per cent of the value of the gold but why would someone lose 1.6 million dollars worth of gold to collect a $160,000 bounty ? I take it the gold gets confiscated . Something doesn't feel right about this scenario and why should I listen to a convicted greedy criminal who doesn't even have the brains not to get caught
