Andre Deed, performing as Gribouille, makes love to an Italian girl, but her father objects and chases him out of the country to France. Still fleeing, he winds up in the Pathe studios, where he has been all along, and signs on to do more movies, promising to appear only as Boireau.
It's a promise he honored more in the breech than in the observance. Deed was a very popular slapstick comedian for Pathe in the silent era, appearing as Boireau, Gribouille and Cretinetti for the same company. While the details of the sort of gags used varied from character name to character name, it wasn't that great, and with the arising of actual film stars -- the character name belonged to Pathe and not to Deed -- this sort of self-mocking, self-aggrandizing comedy offers some amusement, as well as a couple of nice gags.
