The drama series spanned over three decades, starting in 1967 which became the year being remembered in the Singaporean context as when national service was being made mandatory for Singaporean males aged 18, and the same year Singapore had its own currency two years after independence.

The role of Huang Jinhao was originally meant for Fiona Xie, but she pulled out at the last minute due to personal reasons as according to her agent. Eelyn Kok was given the role instead. Xie would later be spotted in Crazy Rich Asians (2018).
Being the year-end blockbuster drama of 2009 in conjunction with Mediacorp's 46th anniversary, it held the largest number of nominations at the 2010 Star Awards (the annual awards ceremony honouring the best Mandarin language productions from Mediacorp), with 20 in both the acting and technical categories (and won five, making the biggest winner), with just the Best Director category seeing four out of five nominations. Tay Peck Choo (who passed away in 2012) would take the gong.
Not only that, screenwriter Ang Eng Tee would be nominated twice for Best Screenplay category, in also the other drama series which he had also written which was also released in 2009 in 'Reunion Dinner', and it would miss out to that.
It also won Best Drama Serial, and the Best Drama Theme Song. And not to be confused with the Best Actress category which Jeanette Aw was also nominated for, she won the then-inaugural award for Favourite Female Character, which was launched in the 2010 edition and was awarded to an actress portraying a role in a drama series or a variety character that is deemed the most popular among the television audience. Until it was discontinued after 2016, prior to 2012 where it was decided by public online voting, the nominees were determined by a team of judges employed by Mediacorp.

Majority of the scenes were filmed in Malacca in Malaysia, though some were also filmed in parts of Singapore.
