- Castiel has been sent back to Heaven. His human host, Jimmy, tries to regain his life. But the demons won't leave him alone and now his family is at risk. Sam and Dean can help a little, but they're going to need a "miracle" to win.
- Castiel schedules a meeting with Dean in his dream but when the Winchester brothers arrive at the location, they find that Castiel has gone. His vessel is actually Jimmy Novak, a religious middle-class man from Illinois that has no recollections of the Castiel's memories. Dean and Sam try to persuade him to stay as he could endanger his family but Jimmy sneaks out and travels to reunite with his wife and daughter.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Angel Castiel summons the brothers to a meeting by dream, but before they arrive he has left his human host, house father Jimmy Novak, who tells them he can't remember anything Castiel did and returns to his middle class suburban home in Pontiac, Illinois, despite the brothers' warning that might endanger them too. Angel Anna Milton joins the brothers, warning them Castiel's recall to heaven must be a terrible sign, maybe even of the apocalypse. Jimmy finds his wife and daughter in real danger and offers himself in their place to demonic henchman Roger. Having seen Sam resort to his demonic powers, Dean helps Bobby Singer trick him into a dungeon.—KGF Vissers
- Dean (Jensen Ackles) fishes, as if the world isn't about to end. He sits on a pier on the edge of a lake, lure in the water. Castiel (Misha Collins) pops up. Dean realizes he's dreaming. Castiel wants to talk. He gives him a note, telling him to go now. Dean wakes up.
Dean and Sam (Jared Padalecki) go inspecting, in the middle of the night. They check out a busted up warehouse. There was a fight. They find a sign similar to the one Cas used to wish the angels back to the cornfield. They find Cas in the rubble. He doesn't know what's going on. But he's not Castiel. He's Jimmy (Misha Collins).
Back at the motel, they feed Jimmy. He hasn't eaten in months. Dean watches his appetite in awe. All Jimmy remembers is a flash of light and he woke up, himself again. He remembers bits and pieces of being possessed. He doesn't remember what Cas wanted to tell them. He knows his name is Jimmy Novak. He's from Pontiac, Ill. He has a family.
One year ago in Pontiac, Ill. Jimmy says grace with his wife and daughter at dinner. He conks out in front of the TV at night, watching a religious channel. His TV starts going haywire. It won't switch off. There's a high pitched whine. He holds his ears and then convulses.
Back outside the motel, Sam thinks they should hang onto him. Dean thinks they should send him home. Sam thinks they saw angel on angel violence and they don't want to let their only lead skip out. Sam argues they'll be protecting them from demons.
Dean breaks the news to Jimmy. He wants to go. Sam won't let him leave.
In the middle of the night, Sam leaves as Jimmy and Dean sleep. Jimmy wakes up as Sam leaves. Jimmy sneaks out as Sam sucks blood by the vending machine, like a demon junkie.
In the morning, Dean laughs. Jimmy got away while Sam was on watch. Sam finds it less funny. They leave.
Jimmy hops a bus. He remembers before. His wife comes home and sees him, elbow deep in boiling water and unburned. He says Castiel asked him to do it to prove his faith. His wife wants to know who Castiel is.
Sam and Dean drive. Anna (Julie McNiven) pops up in the back seat. She can't believe they let Jimmy get away. She thinks Sam seems different.
She says Cas got dragged back home. That's bad. It's painful. Whatever Castiel/Jimmy had to tell them must have been huge.
Jimmy goes home. He remembers his wife telling him to take his pills. His wife doesn't believe Castiel the Angel is speaking to him. Castiel said God chose him for a higher purpose. He says it's a blessing. She's scared. She says if he doesn't take his pills and get help she's taking their daughter Claire (Sydney Imbeau) to her mother's. Outside, Jimmy talks to Castiel, asking what he wants from him. There's a bright light, Jimmy listens. He understands. As long as his family will be OK, he'll do it. Yes, he says. The light shines brighter, racing into him. Jimmy is Castiel.
Jimmy's daughter comes out. He looks at her. "I am not your father," he says as he walks away.
Back in the present, Jimmy rings his family's doorbell. His wife answers. They thought he was dead.
Inside they talk. His wife won't let him see their daughter. It's been almost a year. He says he was in a psych clinic, he wanted to get better before seeing them. He says it's all over now. He was confused and delusional. His wife isn't ready to let him back just yet.
Sam calls Ruby, jonesing hard. He's all out.
Jimmy hugs his daughter. His wife makes sandwiches. He skips grace. There's a ring at the doorbell. His wife answers. It's Roger (Aaron Pearl), wanting to talk to him. His wife goes to get beer. Jimmy and Roger talk. Then Roger promises to gut his daughter while he watches. His eye black over. Just as Jimmy's wife returns with beer, Jimmy starts beating Roger, saying he's a demon. Not exactly the clean slate he was hoping for.
Jimmy puts his wife and daughter in the pantry. They think he's insane as he salts the door. His daughter runs off. "Roger" grabs her, holding a knife to her throat. Roger's wife attacks Jimmy's wife. They're buying the demon thing now. Dean shows up and slits "Roger's" throat. Using his powers of Greyskull, Sam holds the wife still for as long as he can, which isn't long since he's running low. Before Dean can help and cut her, the demon leaves her body. Sam and Dean and the Novaks leave in the car.
Jimmy is ready to believe now the demons are after him. Sam tells him he can never be with his family.
Jimmy talks to his wife. "So, I pretty much owe you the biggest apology ever," she says. She buys the whole demons thing now, but doesn't want to go anywhere without him. He says they don't have a choice.
Sam boosts them a car. Jimmy says his good byes.
As mom and daughter tearfully watch Jimmy drive off again, the daughter asks why daddy's leaving again. Mommy responds by slapping her kid and flashing her tar black eyes.
Driving, Dean asks Sam what happened with the demon he couldn't kill. He wants to know what's going on with Sam's mojo.
Sam gets a call. It's Jimmy's wife, Amelia (Wynn Everett), for Jimmy. He talks to her and realizes something is terribly wrong.
They pull up outside a warehouse. Jimmy will go in alone as planned and Sam and Dean will creep in. They know it's probably a trap. Dean has a plan.
Jimmy rails to the heavens at Castiel for not holding up his end of the deal. He asks for help and heads into the warehouse.
His demon wife and daughter are inside. Amelia knows he didn't come alone.
Two helpers drag in Sam and Dean. Sam is not impressed with Dean's plan.
Amelia knows Sam's powers aren't working. She pulls out a gun. She shoots Jimmy. She orders a demon henchman to kill his daughter, who is tied to a chair nearby. Just as he's about to whack her with a metal pipe, the young girl puts her hand on the henchmen's forehead and sucks the evil right out of him.
Sam and Dean go into attack mode. Jimmy sees Castiel is in his daughter. She blasts the other baddie going after Dean. Sam's working on another woman, staring longingly at her throat. He dives in for a meal and comes up slimy. Dean watches in horror. But as Jimmy's demon wife comes after Dean, Sam has the power to blast the bad out.
Castiel, in Jimmy's daughter, tells him of course they keep their promises and it's time for him to go home. He says his daughter chose to go with him. It's in her blood, just like it was in his. He begs Castiel to take him instead of her. She warns him it'll be 100 times worse than his last year. He doesn't care. "As you wish," she says. She puts her hand on her dad's face and give him some God blast. The kid turns back to herself. Jimmy is Castiel again. He gets up and walks away.
Dean asks what he was going to tell him. Cas learned his lesson while he was away, he serves Heaven, not man, and he certainly doesn't serve him.
In the car. Awkward silence. Sam asks Dean to let him have it. Dean says he's not mad. He doesn't care. He's tired. He's done.
Bobby (Jim Beaver) calls. It's about the apocalypse.
Once they get to Bobby's, Sam asks what it's all about. He walks into a cell Bobby points him towards. And then they lock him there.
