Will/JJ

Warning: Spoilers
JJ/Will episode! Great Prentiss/JJ interaction. I remember when I found out that they were bringing Will back I wasn't too keen since he does have a really annoying voice but in terms of arc, I guess it was good that they brought back a character they had already introduced and to show that JJ did have a life outside of work that she had been keeping a secret from the team. Plus it brought about the awesome storyline in this episode of Prentiss trying to get JJ to admit her relationship <3 <3 <3 <3 Awwh! Poor JJ! So naive when she thinks the team doesn't know. Good case as well. Did feel kind of sorry for the unsub. Oh the end! Rosie Thomas playing! Prentiss plays her final card. Will/JJ kiss!

Pretty good, though the case could have been a little better
TheLittleSongbird1 February 2017
Not one of the best Season 3 episodes like "Elephant's Memory", "Lo-Fi", "Seven Seconds" and "Lucky" but it is a better episode than the likes of "Birthright", "Scared to Death" and particularly "Identity" (none of those are bad at all, just that they were episodes that could have done more with their stories).

"In Heat" is another example of an episode that could have done more with its story (feeling somewhat bland in comparison to what made the best Season 3 episodes so good), but credit is due for handling JJ's subplot with sensitivity and with good balance with everything else and for approaching a very touchy and difficult subject with tact and sensitivity.

As always, the production values are great, with the episode being made with class, grit, style and atmosphere. The music is haunting and at times melancholic, and the direction giving the story a brisk and alert pace but allowing the action to breathe too.

JJ's romantic subplot story sees a touching vulnerable side to her and makes her more interesting than she was before. This was back when one appreciated having her in the foreground after being not as prominent as the rest of the cast for a lot of the previous episodes rather than being irritated at the overuse of her and how out of character she became in Seasons 7 and 9 especially. The unsub's conflicted sexuality story is a difficult subject to bring alive to screen and was always going to touch nerves in concept and execution, but was handled as aforementioned with tact and sensitivity as well as honesty rather than in a trivial, biased and judgemental fashion.

Scripting is thought-provoking, with good profiling that makes sense and hardly neglected and very touching team interaction. There are scarier and more interesting unsubs around, but this unsub is hardly bland and "In Heat" doesn't make the mistake of trying too hard to make one feel sorry for him. The acting is very good all round.

Regarding the case itself, it is a little bland in places and could have done with a slightly tighter pace and more tension and suspense. The climax seemed somewhat too convenient as well, and the flirtatious banter is overdone and didn't gel particularly well here, though it's certainly been far worse since.

To conclude, a pretty good episode if not a season high-point. 7/10 Bethany Cox

Pretty good episode

Warning: Spoilers
Disclaimer:I am no expert reviewer, I just need a show to binge watch and I'm going to Write a review for every episode I watch.

This episode may not be the best in the series but it's definitely pretty good it's got a pretty intense plot with a more controversial topic to deal with which always makes for a more interesting show.

Since I'm not gay I won't speak on whether they handled having a gay unsub well but I thought it made for interesting episode about what abuse and not accepting someone can do to a person.

I thought the whole thing with JJ and will was pretty cute at the end especially with all the other agents knowing they've been dating. I'm not sure if I like them as a couple yet since we haven't really got to learn much about will but I think it'll be cute.

Wasn't a huge fan of Morgan hitting on the Miami police officer the whole episode but I mean it was kind of funny at some part so that's fine.

I also just love seeing Kevin and Garcia together I think they're just so cute like any part of the episode that they're in I just know it's gonna be great.

Overall pretty decent episode with a fairly cut and dry case to solve but some really good cute character moments.

Story OK, but...
akicork5 July 2021
The main story is OK and up to standard, but where do the writers think they are going with this LaMontagne story? He is such a whiny wet dish rag! I cannot see any relationship between him and JJ as in any way credible. JJ is more likely to have a lasting relationship within her family - the team - than someone so much weaker in character.

One of my least favorite episodes

Warning: Spoilers
As a Native Floridian, I thought the casting was odd. Out of all the beautiful women in Miami -Italiana, Cubana and Hispanic...why was this person picked to portray Det Lopez?? The underwhelming obvious plastic surgery enhanced duck lips and poorly done augmented breasts with no curves is a direct contradiction to the beautiful women who play Morgan's love interests in later episodes and especially poor representation of the beautiful women of Miami, FL. Facts.

Criminal Minds

In Heat 3.17

8- stars.

Kevin is a bit of a sadist; always scaring Garcia. We think he killed them. Garcia: it looks to us like you've tried quite a lot of aerosol whipped cream, along with every other kind of fatty food.

"So they were all essentially alone". The obvious never gets by you, does it, Reid?

Insecure much LaMontagne?: "You still haven't told them about us"? What you mean to say is: "You still haven't told them about me".

So: Charlie Luvet lies about going to a big Miami, Florida boat race every year and nobody ever asked him for pictures or newspaper articles, anything? PLOT HOLE.

7- stars.

So: New Orleans has a large homosexual community but Charlie Luvet would travel to Florida to hook up? PLOT HOLE.

6- stars.

And now it's time for the "totally unrehearsed" round- robin briefing.

Immature much LaMontagne?: "I don't care if they hear us". What you mean to say is: "I don't care if they hear me".

Umm Prentiss? All the victims were left in plain sight.

5- stars.

"Totally unrehearsed" round- robin number two. You sure it's not a "cluster F"?

Gosh darn it. Morgan didn't get to kick the door in.

ALL Western religions that teach from the Bible believe in forgiveness and not passing judgement on others; God loves us equally.

4- stars.

Yeah Morgan. Put your hands all over the car. Maybe give the door a good kick, too.

Fitzgerald would have had to be behind the driver in order to perform a successful choke hold. PLOT HOLE.

3- stars.

Umm Rossi? He's riding in a convertible which "might explain his sunburn". Idiot.

Any other episode they would be more concerned with their own personal safety; not letting a murderer hold a bag with a gun in it. PLOT HOLE.

2- stars.

Wow. He learned a German accent in just one short car ride.

Morgan holsters his gun. PLOT HOLE.

1- star.
