- As the Emerald Chain tightens its grip and the mystery of the Burn is finally solved, Burnham and the crew have one last chance to save themselves - and the Federation.
- Saru and Culber find Adira on the Kelpien ship inside the Nebula. Adira provides the medicines she brought hidden in her mouth, so that the simulation cannot mask it. This buys them a few hours. When Adira beamed into the Kelpien ship, the Holo simulator recognized Gray as an entity and simulated him as part of the Holo as well. In this way Gray could be heard and seen by everyone, and not just Adira.
Unable to jump away without Stamets, Osyraa fights her way out of Federation headquarters and shuts off life support for the bridge crew. The Viridian attacks the Federation HQ's shields from the outside, while Osyraa tries to shut down the shield emitter from the inside. But Vance orders all ships to open fire and destroy the Discovery. He is prepared to lose the Spore Drive rather than let it fall into Osyraa's hands.
Stamets reaches Vance and begs him to stop shooting at the Discovery. Osyraa manages to destroy the shields, but the Ni'Var have sent their fleet in response to Burnham's message. Burnham is captured and brought to the bridge. She convinces Osyraa to hail Vance as she is outnumbered and outgunned. Burnham asks Vance to trust her and to let the Discovery go. She promises that she won't let him down. Vance allows the Discovery to leave the blockade. Osyraa now resorts to torturing Book to get the location of the Dilithium planet inside the Nebula. She makes Burnham watch and says that she can end this torture and save her fellow bridge crew (who will die within the hour) if she cooperates. Instead, Burnham counter attacks and helps Book escape Osyraa's captivity.
Despite the shutdown of life support, Tilly and the bridge crew are able to plant a bomb in one of the ship's nacelles with the help of the Sphere data, dropping Discovery from warp.
Burnham makes her way to the ship's data core, kills Osyraa in a fight, and resets the computer systems. She turns life support back on and beams all of the Emerald Chain fighters off the ship. Book kills Zareh after a brutal fight. Discovery is captured by the Viridian, so Burnham ejects the warp core right into Viridian and explodes it, to destroy the Viridian.
Aurellio, after a change in heart, suggests that Book could use the spore drive with the Empathic abilities his species has, and they jump to the nebula.
Saru helps Su'Kal realize that he is also a Kelpien. Su'Kal is afraid of the outside, as his mother told him that the Federation would come to rescue him from "outside". He believes outside doesn't exist as the Federation doesn't exist. Saru explains about the Burn and the message that Su'Kal's mother sent into space. Culber and Adira compare their notes and figure out that Dilithium in the planet has impacted Su'Kal's genes, so that now his DNA is somehow connected to sub-space, as Dilithium also has a sub-space component. So, when Su'Kal gets upset, his screams travel through Dilithium and sub-space at its resonant frequency and effects every warp core in range. Whatever scared Su'Kal 125 years ago caused the Burn, as it scared Su'Kal a lot more. If Su'Kal can be removed from the planet, his ability to cause another Burn will cease to exist. Saru encourages Su'Kal to face the room behind the monster. He says that the monster is only trying to help Su'Kal face his fears and deal with the outside world. Saru helps Su'Kal turn the simulation off and come to terms with the death of his mother, as his reaction to that is what caused the Burn, just as Discovery arrives. Gray is afraid of being turned off along with the simulation, but Culber promises to bring him back.
Saru decides to help Su'Kal start a new life on Kaminar, and Burnham is promoted to captain.
The Emerald Chain collapses after Osyraa's death, and planets begin to re-join the Federation. Discovery sets out to bring Dilithium from the nebula to planets that have been cut off by the Burn.
