- The U.S.S. Discovery crew journey to a mysterious planet in hopes of finding a cure for Georgiou's deteriorating condition. Stamets and Adira make a stunning breakthrough with the newly acquired Burn data.
- After studying Georgiou's condition, Culber is visited by Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg), a mysterious Starfleet operative, who explains that since Georgiou has both traveled through time and from a different universe, her molecules have moved too far from their origin and she is now likely to die. Kovich is the same person who had interrogated Georgiou previously. Kovich says that the body's molecules are designed to operate in the time in which they were created, and they learned this during the temporal wars. Kovich says that one temporal soldier jumped through time and dimension both. His atoms ached to jump back to their original time and dimension. He was in so much pain that Kovich asked the Federation for Euthanasia, as he couldn't be sent back to his own dimension, due to the Temporal Accords. Kovich says that Culber should sedate Georgiou and keep her under constraints. But the computer suggests a different solution.
Consulting with Discovery's computer, which has been augmented with the intelligent Sphere data, Culber believes that Georgiou could be saved by traveling to an uninhabited planet, Dannus V.
Stamets and Adira use the SB-19 data to trace the source of the Burn to the Verubin Nebula, and discover a distress signal from a Kelpien star ship. The distress signal is encoded and Adira has been trying to decode the message using an algorithm, but the algorithm is stuck at 80% and not moving towards completion. Stamets points out a mistake in Adira's work. He speculates that Adira is tired, angry and Gray and misses him.
Adira fixes her mistake, and a video emerges. In the video a Kelpien, Dr Issa of KSF Khi'Eth talks about how they are stranded in the Nebula. The ship was contacted 6 months ago by USS Hiraga Gennai, and its captain Robert Weems. They were on their way to rescue them and expected to reach in 2 weeks. But they never reached. The message is over a hundred years old and a few years before the burn. Federation records show that their mission was to explore a Dilithium nursery within the nebula.
Book asks for Saru's permission to stay on the Discovery and help with the Starfleet mission. He says he is a skilled pilot, an engineer and has information. Book says that the Emerald Chain is preparing for an attack.
On Dannus V, Georgiou and Burnham encounter a strange being named Carl (Paul Guilfoyle) who directs Georgiou to a door.
On the other side of the door, she finds herself back in the Mirror Universe during the time she was Emperor. It is the day when she christens the Charon and it is the time of the first slave uprising, which was brutally squashed by her when she went through this time-line previously. Georgiou knows that Lorca is planning a coup against her. Tilly informs her that mirror Burnham has betrayed her by sleeping with Lorca. This is the day when mirror Burnham will try to take Georgiou's throne and her life.
Georgiou finds that her time with Discovery has made her a better person than she was then, and she decides to use her knowledge of the past to alter certain events. Georgiou sees Burnham beat up mirror Saru at an official function, for daring to speak to a Terran officer. Typically, Kelpien slaves are executed when they reach the Vahar'Ai, and served as soup. But Georgiou spares mirror Saru, talks to him about how Vahar'Ai does not lead to madness. She even appoints him as her spy in the palace. The Charon is unveiled in front of the entire Royal court. As Georgiou witnesses the proceedings, she keeps an eye out on who makes the first move against her. Mirror Stamets takes part in a skit to celebrate Georgiou's rule. Georgiou stabs mirror Stamets at the end of the skit, as she avoids mirror Stamets's attack on herself.
Georgiou then corners mirror Burnham with her security team and says that she knows that mirror Burnham was plotting with Lorca and that mirror Stamets was helping her. Mirror Burnham is livid at Georgiou. She admits that while Georgiou plucked Burnham from a trash heap, but mirror Burnham was the Queen of that heap and now she is only a tool in the hands of Georgiou. She admits to plotting with Lorca, whom she claims loves her for being her. Georgiou says that she knows how this future will end, and refuses to kill her. Georgiou says that she has just rewritten the future with this one act.
